i heard this one was discontinued and... this is a 1BA in a non-vented shell so no equalized pressure = DOA
part of the tuning of etys is that the deep insertion will push the length mode resonance to past 10k and a shallower IEM won't achieve that or offer the ety isolation

i mean, the dsp version is more versatile in that you can turn off the EQ and then it's just the stock analog tuning anyway or you can use the 5band peq to ur preference. But i guess it's more annoying for the people using a pmp or multiple sources

I'd stay stock unless you plan on using any higher quality audio like FLACs. If you're stickin with MP3s or apples stuff, stock will run smoother/still provide an excellent experience. I'm not super familiar with 4th gen (I have a 5.5 and used a 2nd way back when) but if you want access to extras and cool stuff like EQ or 'themes', then Rockbox is the way to go, but it'll be every so slightly more clunky than the stock experience, and for some that's a deal breaker.
At least on the 5.5 version, I have to click multiple times, including a pause to load (even with iFlash, but it's 0.5 seconds instead of 4-5) before I can even consider selecting music. It's something like database > albums/artists/album artists/etc > find what i'm looking for > now I select either an album, a song or something else > 1 second ish load > starts and then no more loading after that and is buttery smooth. Until you want to switch to a different album/artist/whatever. It's easy as pie when you get used to it, but compared to the stock experience there's a lot of steps involved, since Rockbox really gives you access to a shitload of stuff, some extra complexity is expected. If you're even slightly curious, give it a whirl. You can usually 'dual boot' between stock and Rockbox by fucking with the lockswitch when turning it on. I'm no EQer, but it's nice to use the auto-eq thing in the OP to select your IEMs or w/e and then 'Rockbox' as your software and it did make a difference, at least for my EA500s. Nothing mind blowing, but it's nice.

you're just making a broad sweeping assumption. i highly doubt you've tested / observed the market so extensively to say that. some audio products are bass-emphasized, plenty are not.
for outside use and younger males, more bass is usually ideal.

Need IEM buying advice.
>Budget
Probably within the $100-$200 range. Not trying to spend more than $200 on IEMs. I'd be okay with going under $100 if there's a GOAT pair that competes with higher priced IEMs
>Intended usage
Listening to music or podcasts away from my PC (gym, in public, around the house)
>Frequency response preference and music examples
Not exactly sure but I think I prefer an analytical/slightly treble-centric sound. Most headphones I've ever owned were neutral or bright. Neutral, bright, or maybe even V shaped. I like all sorts of music but I listen to rock and metal the most.
>Past gear and your thoughts on them
IEMs not sure only ever had cheap ones. For headphones I've used the Sony MDR7506s which were good and I'm currently using the Hifiman Sundaras which are also great. Some Audio Technica pairs I forget the exact model but they were my least favorite
I also have a Qudelix 5k that I will be using to amplify them

by your own words your budget is inconsistent. there are plenty of good options under $100 like epz q1 pro and aoshida e20. for over $100 simgot supermix4, arpegear hane, epz p50
it's up to you what you want to spend. there is no definitively describing to you in words what the difference between them is, ultimately that would rest on you and your preferences for minute variations in frequency response

there is literally no hiss. Super sensitive to that bullshit. there was in earlier bt20 models from what i researched, but the bluetooth 5.3 bt20 pro model literally has zero hiss.
>just werks
>AAC default codec connection on my s23
>10 hour battery life
>case has 60 hours in reserve
>physical buttons on both hooks
>works with google assistant
>18 fucking dollars
literally do not give a fuck, some people claim the mids are boosted but I don't hear anything of the sort either. For POS under 100 dollars they're literally perfect imo. Curious how they stack up to similar offerings though.
also nth for PLUTUS

I use IEMs exclusively, and apparently built-in audio for phones and PCs is usually pretty shit. Are there any good chips to look out for? I'm considering getting a PCIE sound card, it doesn't need to be able to drive powerful headphones. Any good ones on aliexpress?

PCIE sound cards are (thankfully, rest in piss) an outdated form factor and solution to good audio. just get a desktop DAC+AMP solution (ex: FiiO K11 / K7) or one of the USB-C dongles recommended in OP and shopping rentry (you can just use any longer USB-C / USB-A -> USB-C to connect to PC)

I'd rather have something inside the PC, to reduce the clutter around it. For portability I'll probably get myself a PMP with its own good DAC.
FYI I'll also be buying an RS232 PCIE card, so yeah it kinda is 1992.

To say it in other words: you are barely, if at all, "improving," anything by going through the trouble of finding a soundcard and installing it as opposed to the outputs supplied from the motherboard. Both are just plain subpar. PCIE sound cards were a bunch of marketing hoopla targeting (surprise surprise) gullible videogamers and uninformed normie nerds.
I am trying to inform you: they're not worth anything and are a waste of money compared to what else exists (smaller DAC+AMPs with far more sophisticated modern audio architecture that achieve better results than decades-past equipment)

I see on ali they're not generally popular unless you want surround-sound outputs or audiofool bullshittery. So instead I should get a PCIE blanking plate, get a USB port via mobo headers, and mount an external sound card inside my PC. Here I was assuming that the reduced size constraints and large bipolar power rails available would be quite useful for making a sound card. Won't all the portable units use ceramic or electrolytic capacitors in series with the audio output? Instead of film caps. I'm not autistic enough to complain about cap quality on power rails, but that DC-blocking cap on the output (e.g. C9-12 in the PCM2903 datasheet page 28) makes an actual impact to sound quality.

in general tho, swabs are probably more dangerous in terms of wax compaction

Won't happen if you use solvent like peroxide. Given time, the wax will be dissolved and pushed out by bubbles. You can also insert a swab an spin it to catch all remaining earwax.

depends on how and where you plan on using them and why you want to get them
for convenience, any tws will be better on the virtue of having a much smaller case that is more portable as well as having more features such as ANC
if we're talking sound quality, it's a whole thing that we have to tackle. generally, a bt adapter with a competent pos will be better, but if peq is available, stock sound quality is not important. this only addresses sound quality and not things like hiss, distortion, etc. which will vary from model to model
fiio utws series is solid, nothing amazing but nothing bad either. look at reviews for things like battery life, noise floor, features, etc as not many anons here have experience with these adapters

E500 is plagued with bad QC i.e. bad channel matching, you can't replace the cable in case it breaks, but it's a nice option if you like bullet form factor or want to buy final type E tips
gate is better overall in terms of QC, build, cable, and that sound signature tends to please more people

people report that putting electrical tape on some screws, or just unscrewing them a little fixes the issue somewhat
maybe an impedance adapter would do the trick but at that point the only upside it has over DACs is that it leaves your usb-c slot free

i've been using Sony's 720n for daily music and commuting, but for gym they turn into a fucking oven lmao not gonna use em, audio wise they are just fine for me, i have a mild hypoacusia so lol, i'm just looking to have low-mid volume music while cancelling outside noise as much as my budget allows it and 720n do just fine in that regard for me
would appreciate recommendations

If it's always better to own your music files, the same should apply to measurements.
Here's the full PEQdB database, separated by measurements and targets. The database is extensive, but the quality is sorely lacking: inconsistent naming and sorting, not traceability, and no post processing.

How well do IEM's cancel noise? I want to be able to walk next to a road where trucks and cars drive by at ~80km/h and be able to listen to audiobooks without the noise being a disturbance.
Currently have a few years old Jabra's, and they have a decent Active Noise Cancelling, but it's not enough for this use. I know this isn't the thread for it, but feel free to suggest regular earphones with ANC as well if anyone is an expert on the matter.
Budget preferably under 200€. Don't care too much for the audio quality. If I listen to music, it's usually classical or metal.

sadly, the closest thing I can imagine is a girl wearing twshit with some generic/overhyped anime girl like hatsune miku or vtuber dogshit, nothing more ambitious than that and surely no IEMs since cables are out of fashion and earhooks are considered goofy, nerdy or even can be mistaken by dumb bitches as hearing aids

there's a distinct sizzle/zing/sheen in the lower treble that can be jarring especially if you're not used to it, the bass also doesn't have the same physical impact as the DD although it still is by no means weak
it's still worth it if you want to check out what planars sound like and let me tell you, they have their own dose of advantages like very well extended and natural upper treble, wide spacious soundstage and pin-point imaging by default, out of music genres I listen to they're excellent for ambient and trance where you can really hear natural reverberations and even stuffy-sounding instruments like supersaw are well-separated
give it a try, it's a journey

Sure, here's mine. The output is OK, I get usable listening volume even on 250Ω headphones, but it is quite noisy with more sensitive IEMs (fine with the truthear Gate, not with my Simgot EW200). It's noisier than my desktop PC's front jack, my audio interface and my PS Vita. Using USB-C gets around that, but at that point I might as well use an android device (which most players sadly are these days).
Still, it's a neat player once you put Rockbox on it, it plays everything including my MIDI and tracker music and I can boot into the default firmware if I want to use BT.
I'll probably get a player with a cleaner output, I really like it but it's a shame it's too noisy for some of my gear.

Btw I never owned a pair of professional IEMs before. What are the best budget IEMs that you can find on aliexpress right now that are up to 30ish euros? Don't have to be planar if there are others that are better than ones with planar drivers but planar based ones are fine too. Primarily listen to EDM and rock but also would like them to be good for movies and games.

Also, space-travel is not loud enough so that is something. Despite all this, space-travel gets the most use. Its just good enough and so convenient and anc does work, kinda. If there is a chu2 but tws, 100bux or under, I'm buying it right now, but I haven't found it.

Yes. So far the only player to give me satisfaction in that regard is mpd on linux. If I play a 16/44.1 file, that's what is sent to my dac. If I play DSD, it gets decoded by my DAC. No tricks or gimmicks, no processing, padding, resampling, mixing or conversion to PCM, just the raw, unaltered signal.

The 7g seems readily available as new-old-stock on ebay, but it looks like a pain in the ass to open up, and isn't mentioned as being supported by Rockbox.

I bought a nice pair of foam eartips, and they are still perfect but one of the side let go completely, and I feel like if I tried using ca glue on it, it would just embed itself in the foam instead (though the center side of the foam is smooth so maybe not?).

I also have KATOs but I swear they're losing clarity compared to these, and the soundstage/imaging is lacking.
Do any open-back iems exist that can even get close to these? Will settle for closed-back

Bonus points if cheap, but I'll spend up to $100, they'll be paired up with a Fiio BTR5 most of the time. Would spend more but I gotta be responsible and pay to have my emissions fixed.

There are a lot of things where digitalization leads to loss of information, e.g. a painting has an "infinite" resolution, whereas every digital picture is limited by a finite resolution. In the realm of audio, however, it is possible to digitize an analog signal, and perfectly recreate the analog signal: https://xiph.org/video/vid2.shtml. Signal processing belongs to the digital realm.
