I'd stay stock unless you plan on using any higher quality audio like FLACs. If you're stickin with MP3s or apples stuff, stock will run smoother/still provide an excellent experience. I'm not super familiar with 4th gen (I have a 5.5 and used a 2nd way back when) but if you want access to extras and cool stuff like EQ or 'themes', then Rockbox is the way to go, but it'll be every so slightly more clunky than the stock experience, and for some that's a deal breaker.

At least on the 5.5 version, I have to click multiple times, including a pause to load (even with iFlash, but it's 0.5 seconds instead of 4-5) before I can even consider selecting music. It's something like database > albums/artists/album artists/etc > find what i'm looking for > now I select either an album, a song or something else > 1 second ish load > starts and then no more loading after that and is buttery smooth. Until you want to switch to a different album/artist/whatever. It's easy as pie when you get used to it, but compared to the stock experience there's a lot of steps involved, since Rockbox really gives you access to a shitload of stuff, some extra complexity is expected. If you're even slightly curious, give it a whirl. You can usually 'dual boot' between stock and Rockbox by fucking with the lockswitch when turning it on. I'm no EQer, but it's nice to use the auto-eq thing in the OP to select your IEMs or w/e and then 'Rockbox' as your software and it did make a difference, at least for my EA500s. Nothing mind blowing, but it's nice.

Anyone have experience with Meze Albas? Currently have Final A4000s and Etymotic ER2XR. Wanting the Albas cause the A4000s put pressure on my ear's concha after a few hours and the Ety's are a pita to remove and reinsert every time a coworker tries to chat. I'm also open to suggestions. <= $160

I want to carry my Aigo Eros Q, which has a hole meant for lanyards and cell phone charms I guess, on my belt. I've been thinking about taking a quick release buckle and putting it on one of those belt loops, and then thread some paracord or whatever through it to attach the player. Anything I should think of before getting the supplies?

How well do IEM's cancel noise? I want to be able to walk next to a road where trucks and cars drive by at ~80km/h and be able to listen to audiobooks without the noise being a disturbance.

Currently have a few years old Jabra's, and they have a decent Active Noise Cancelling, but it's not enough for this use. I know this isn't the thread for it, but feel free to suggest regular earphones with ANC as well if anyone is an expert on the matter.

Budget preferably under 200€. Don't care too much for the audio quality. If I listen to music, it's usually classical or metal.

there's a distinct sizzle/zing/sheen in the lower treble that can be jarring especially if you're not used to it, the bass also doesn't have the same physical impact as the DD although it still is by no means weak
it's still worth it if you want to check out what planars sound like and let me tell you, they have their own dose of advantages like very well extended and natural upper treble, wide spacious soundstage and pin-point imaging by default, out of music genres I listen to they're excellent for ambient and trance where you can really hear natural reverberations and even stuffy-sounding instruments like supersaw are well-separated

Sure, here's mine. The output is OK, I get usable listening volume even on 250Ω headphones, but it is quite noisy with more sensitive IEMs (fine with the truthear Gate, not with my Simgot EW200). It's noisier than my desktop PC's front jack, my audio interface and my PS Vita. Using USB-C gets around that, but at that point I might as well use an android device (which most players sadly are these days).
Still, it's a neat player once you put Rockbox on it, it plays everything including my MIDI and tracker music and I can boot into the default firmware if I want to use BT.
I'll probably get a player with a cleaner output, I really like it but it's a shame it's too noisy for some of my gear.

I've tried all three and its still crap. Out of the tips they gave, only the smallest one fit me. So using that. I hear things with chu2 that I didn't know exist in space travel. Yes. So far the only player to give me satisfaction in that regard is mpd on linux. If I play a 16/44.1 file, that's what is sent to my dac. If I play DSD, it gets decoded by my DAC. No tricks or gimmicks, no processing, padding, resampling, mixing or conversion to PCM, just the raw, unaltered signal.

I do own an iPod Nano 5g, but it's not very usable as it is. It's not supported by Rockbox and I don't want to convert all my current flac library. The later iPod classic seems to be the best option. The 7g seems readily available as new-old-stock on ebay, but it looks like a pain in the ass to open up, and isn't mentioned as being supported by Rockbox.
