>David Lynch, director of Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, and Eraserhead, was that rarity — a grant-funded filmmaker who was also a true artist. Staying apolitical in his work, Lynch expressed the personal idiosyncrasy that reflected his upbringing in Midwest America (born in Missoula, Mont., and of Finnish-Danish heritage) as well as his private, frightened knowledge of national terror.
>Lynch submerged this abject political realization in the practice of surrealist art. Combining dream and nightmare logic, his storytelling fearlessly visualized the subconscious. Lynch’s use of noncommercial techniques (superimpositions, characters displaying double consciousness) was considered unprofitable until Eraserhead, his debut feature, attracted nonconformist, pot-smoking cult audiences of 1970s “Midnight Movies.” This was unexpected for a project that began at the American Film Institute.
>The eruption of common pathologies in Lynch’s films could be financed by industry risk-takers, such as comedian and hitmaker Mel Brooks, who produced The Elephant Man. But Lynch’s artistic pursuit confounded Hollywood’s usual condescension — and he knew it. When the foundation world first acknowledged his struggle, Lynch exclaimed, “It was a total life-changing phone call.” For four years at AFI’s stables, “California sunshine was pulling the fear out of me.”
>Lynch’s legacy warns against politically correct mediocrity. His passing should inspire a new national sense that artists don’t conform to government blandishment, but at their best, they force the culture — and the marketplace — to accept and redefine art.

>Six or seven boys, aged twelve to fourteen, were playing in a heap of rubbish on the waterfront. One of the boys was urinating against a post and smiling at the other boys. The boys noticed Lee. Now their play was overtly sexual, with an undercurrent of mockery. They looked at Lee and whispered and laughed. Lee looked at them openly, a cold, hard stare of naked lust. He felt the tearing ache of limitless desire. He focused on one boy, the image sharp and clear, as if seen through a telescope with the other boys and the waterfront blacked out. The boy vibrated with life like a young animal. A wide grin showed sharp, white teeth. Under the torn shirt Lee glimpsed the thin body.

For the guy that asked an ending to the cop story: there isn't, we just went to the Von Trier screening via car, watched the movie, then went to eat some ceviche at a seafood restaurant after the movie. Came home around 11:30 pm and there were no notifications, neither did I receive any concerned neighbors around the daytime hours, so I just guess that the most likely thing is that the guy and his GF didn't press charges or that they will press them at a later date. Honestly, whatever happens happens, this is not really in my control.

The 2 hours 20 minutes version. It's the theatrical cut everyone knows.
The 4 hours reconstruction uses still photographs from missing scenes, therefore rhythm of the film is hampered. So I don't see the reason to have it as the first watch.
There's also a fan-cut in vimeo that is nigh 2 hours long, but it happens to have: a custom original soundtrack (played by the fan himself) and retains the golden-tinted scenes... I think this version is great, but that's just my personal opinion.
>Is this the original 2hr 20min cut played at a faster frame rate?
>Hi, It's actually from a 4 hour version that I cut down to accommodate the allocated performance time we had. I was also editing it live as part of the dynamics of the performance which includes some improvised scoring. That said, you have a good eye. I did speed it up just a tad to bring the overall length down. Thanks for your question.

>Bresson
He's just the best to ever do it alongside Godard and Antonioni: great stories, great themes that I can relate to. He's one of the deepest directors ever, with a filmography that builds over time and late career films which are mostly better than his early works. He uses minimalism to its utmost potential.

Frampton's film is an exercise in mathematical logic in cinema. Or is it a mechanical logic? Three viewings do not help me to explain to you what the film is all about. It's about alphabet. It's about the unities of similarities. It's about sameness in a confusion. It's about logic in chance. It's about structure and logic. It's about rhythm. Ah, what a difference between Zorns Lemma and all the 'serious' commercial movies that I occasionally praise!

Yeah, the education system usually makes things very boring, even those that are cool, like art. Were you public or privately schooled? I also stopped drawing when I began feeling like I was shit at it. I guess taking up the discipline to start again could be good. I did some graphic design work and my peers really liked what I brought to the table, even though I felt like my painting and drawing wasn't up to standards. Maybe I should get some classes, could be fun.

Only poor niggas here on /film/. And I went to public school all my life, swinging around two cities every 2 years.
Tbqhwy my last time at school (highschool) was a waste of time and I really really would like to at least go back in time to punch myself and tell my past self to go study physics or calculus on the meanwhile instead of sleeping 3 hours every night and the rest in class, and also to man up and tell the blonde foid bitch that I kinda like her and to stop procrastinating like a fucking retard because that will ruin his life yet to come jesus fucking christ AAAA
And yeah art class in nearly every school I was sucked with the exception of the tiny rural school I went to when I was 11/12 where I remember doing some epic portrait of Darwin using coal.

Epic.
Sucks that your time sucked. I used to think public High School was a piece of shit when I was there, but looking back at it, the stretch from 13 to 19 years old were probably the best years of my life, in no doubt helped by drugs and alcohol. There was a time when me and my friends used to get black out drunk 3 or 4 times a week, and I very much enjoyed not going to classes to pursue our "hobby" lmao. The only thing I regret was not putting in more effort to get a better GPA for university, would have made my life a lot easier. I have the good luck of having had the balls to tell every girl I liked back then that I liked her, though really, I didn't get too far. I also broke some hearts, which probably wasn't that nice of me. I kinda regret that too, desu.

I love the Lav Diaz films I've seen because of the absurd lengths he goes to to create depth and make you emotional. You'll find yourself wondering why he chose to do something in such a way, and when it all comes together it destroys you. He makes monumental works where the parts that strike the viewer the most are either minor, poetic aspects or the film's complex, yet fully correlated, thematic skein.
I love his works just as much, if I were required to keep my analyses of them to myself.
