The Pure Hell
They showed the original St Trinians films again over Christmas.

Its funny what you can show at 10am unedited. Flash Harry's catalogue of glamour shots with commentary like "15 and up for it" for selling girls to Arabs in the third film The Pure Hell of St Trinians is particularly eyebrow raising, as is their production of Hamlet which I think might have inspired the porn classic, Les Petites Écolières. The seduction of a high court judge in Blue Murder of St Trinians is also an interesting development. They are very funny though.

It seems you can get away with anything in B&W. The one colour film in the series, The Wildcats of St Trinians, remains resolutely unshown since the 80s and it seems only available from shops with blacked out windows. I think they overdid the Page 3 girls.

I thought Nickel Boys was great. It's pretty similar to some Malick films in terms of editing and visual allegories. There are some really creative shots and transitions, and the director was pretty brilliant in his usage of archival footage early in the film, setting the tone for the introduction of footage that is more narratively relevant while simultaneously visually correlating both inclusions.
Sorry for the late reply, which you may not even see, I rarely browse 4chan anymore and just wanted to see what the /film/ threads were like when it was announced that Lynch died.

That's too bad. I feel like the POV gimmick actually works pretty well for the film. The present day sections show the camera from just behind the head, as opposed to the regular FPV, to make it more clear which time frame is being shown while also being an additional tacit expression of how the death of the character's friend still looms over him, as he continues to live in his friend's place.

Why are the set design and costume design in 1930s films so kino? Those departaments really shone in that decade. Ophuls' camera fluidity really places you right in the room with the characters, you move with them and around them, masterful use of space and movement. This is his first gem, the previous german ones are pretty unremarkable (inb4 filtered).

I plan on watching many more 30s, 20s and 10s films this year, please feel free to rec more obscure/underrated stuff from those decades if you would be so kind.

I do care about the ideals of certain others (our ideals are often the same). In the absence of unity against common enemies, congeniality, love, fear, etc. you shouldn't care about my ideals.

We're engaging here in talk about talk, which I do because it's fun. Politeness, honesty, truth, rationality, etc. are the conditions giving the game its meaning. But life is bigger than the game, and I do advocate this attitude in real life when confronted by vitally important matters.
