I'm just getting started tinkering with apps, and I've got a very simple app here that just makes an API call. I want it to speak the results via TTS, but for some reason I'm unable to get it to speak anything at all. Doesn't matter where I put the speak() call or how many of them I sprinkle into the code, it never speaks. Even if I put the API call inside the TTS's onInit() so that receiving the text result itself proves that the TTS has successfully initialized by that point, it remains silent.
I know my device is capable of TTS because I've got the code for another, similar app that DOES read out its results. I've got all the same permissions and everything in the manifest as that one, too.

I'm close to saying fuck it and just buying an iPhone. At least you can just pop into an Apple Store if shit goes sideways.I've probably only ever had to sideload an app a handful of times in my life, so that's not a biggie. I know Android has a lot more freedom and quirks, but I just want a phone that werkz and not have to worry about anything else.

So, I want to completely disable the wifi, bluetooth and camera functions on a variety of mobile devices and my laptop too.
Nothing I can find indicates that taking such action could be illegal in any way. It is however abundantly obvious that attempting this is very difficult and dissuaded to the extent that even un soldering chips may not be possible on many devices.
I have searched but with older devices no longer being supported as a result of the "upgrade" to 5g my options are to drop out of society entirely or to make a way.
I lack the equipment to do the soldering myself and I have little trust for the people who can do it for me so I need to be able to check their work.
In the meantime I shall continue with my own research and experimentation. I wish I were able to post photos.
I refuse all cookies so I am unable to create my own thread on this topic and I apologise if my post is off topic. If so, and if someone else were willing to create such a thread I would be most appreciative.

I've been rocking the dual Samsung Z Fold Special Edition and iPhone 16 Pro Max at the same time for a few months now.

iPhone feels way slower than the Z Fold Special Edition.
iPhone feels way more thin and easy to hold.
Z Fold finger ID reader in the power button is way faster and feels better than iPhone Face ID.
iPhone's anti-reflective glass looks better than the Z Fold screen, but the fully opened Z Fold is by far the best for games/movies.
iPhone does a terrible job multi-tasking. I can't even listen to Youtube videos while doing other tasks on my iPhone. The Z Fold has no such problems at all.

Overall I'd say the Z Fold SE is by far the more enjoyable phone to use, but I still find myself using the iPhone in most cases just because of how thin it is. But if I'm sitting down or browsing the internet I would immediately switch to the Z Fold SE because it feels so much faster.

this morning i was using my Nokia G42 5G like normal and all of a sudden *!BAM!*

Only 11 months old, still in warranty so I contacted 'HMD' and I've arranged a repair with them. Still, bad taste in my mouth. I won't buy HMD again.

- If they manage to 'repair' it, then obviously I'll take it and keep using it until it dies again.
- If they automatically send me a replacement G42, again I guess I'll just take it.
- If they say it can't be repaired and we don't have any more of those but we can offer you a new HMD branded device, again I suppose I'll take it.
I'd prefer just to have my money back, but I don't think they'd offer that, esp after 11 months.

Any, for any future purchases, what's the /spg/-recommended brand for cheap phones (that don't spontaneously sudoku after ~1 year like this one)? Moto, Xiaomi?
Must be cheap, because this shows how a phone can go kaputt (or could be lost/stolen/physically damaged) in an instant, no point pouring a lot of money into a phone I feel.

Quick question for androids, so while I mainly download apps from f droid, of course theres some I need to get that are not there. Main thing I google then is "app name apk" download it, then that's it. But for buggy apps that do need constant updates, its a massive pain to manually download like this, and this is something usually built into the app distributors, even FOSS ones with F droid.
