Gonna repost here 'cause I'm an idiot and didn't check the reply count.
I want to build a budget HTPC. Haven't done any SFF stuff before. It doesn't need to be in the most compact case ever, but it does need to be smaller than a normal ATX mid-tower. Something like the Node 202 would be nice but could be a bit bigger.
I have an RX580 8GB so was hoping to build around that, but it's not ideal for SFF.
>255mm and full height so not especially compact
>draws more power than its performance really justifies
>so would need a better PSU than the cheapo 300W SFX models which really drives up the cost
Maybe I should sell the 580 and buy something more sff-friendly?
I don't have a specific budget in mind but this is just a fun secondary TV machine so I want to spend as little as possible (all used parts, full bargain hunting mode) and am happy with ~rx580 performance.
Just looking for any general suggestions.

Guys, explain to me why some people use upscalers and get all the weirdness that come with them if they can just run games on lower resolution? I mean, if you play upscale to 1440p from 1080p why don't you just set it to actual 1080p? Your real resolution is already 1080p and additionally suffers from articacts, why would you prefer it over the clean 1080p, I don't get it.

Why yes, I will be buying the PNY 5090, which will be the fairest priced AIB 5090 while being made by an AMERICAN company. No, I will not be buying the $2899 Asus Astral that will inevitably need to be RMA'd after it's 4th fanussy gets blown out in a week, just so ASUS can charge me a $2000 repair fee because they found a microscopic scratch on the shroud.

If it's a pure HTPC, i.e. no gaming, you can use any modern IGP. They're all good for 4k output though obviously more recent ones have better codec support.
Outside of that, you could consider modding your 580. Deshroud, tie on a Noctua, and downclock until silent. Still not an ideal HTPC card but much cheaper than buying a new one.

Because it looks better than just lowering your resolution. If you have a 4K screen go turn on 1080p and look at it, then turn on DLSS performance and look at how much better it looks. Would you like video or image examples?

See we have this thing called import duties that normally apply at the airport if you purchase electronics over 430 EUR in value, so it makes sense to buy stuff at a place like Microcenter and haul it over if it's below that. Online transactions are fair game however.

I am tech illiterate. What sort of difference in performance can you reasonably expect between 5080 and 4080S, in theory?
Are we talking like 3-5% improvement?
Where i'm from the 5080 will cost pretty much the same as what the 4080S costs right now. Once the 5080 is out, surely the 40 series will drop in price across the board?
Should i wait until the 5080 is out and then buy a 4080S, or would i be better off buying the 5080?

Maybe I'm too retarded to find a good video showcasing this but here's the first example I ran into, some ESL comparing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MalHoFD0-I
Fast forward to 2:30 for the most obvious example. Performance mode DLSS at 4k (so 1080p internally) just looks way better than native 1080p. If you have a 4K monitor you can test this yourself, hell even with a 1440p monitor you can see this because DLSS Quality at 1440p often looks better than native 1080p.

Thanks anon. I do want to game on it and that's probably gonna be its sole purpose actually, so "cheap compact TV gaming rig" would have been a better name than HTPC.
Open to modifying parts but even assuming the card fits I'd still have the PSU problem. It would fit as-is in the Node 202 and those are available, but I'd rather use a cheap ATX PSU.
>>103882649
I'd probably buy the new card and then resell the 580 whenever. Don't overthink the exact prices.
I was trying to emphasise that this is just a fun mini project, not my main rig.
So on a scale of
>brand new high end parts in the smallest most beautiful precision mITX case imaginable
to
>dirt cheap pile of crudely assembled loud overheating dogshit to be hidden behind the tv
I'm thinking something closer to the latter.

What sort of resolution and games are you targeting? A 580 is on the "1080p/30/low" side of things in current year so I'd definitely recommend a new card if you have a 4k TV and/or want to play AAAs on it. OTOH it should be fine if you're just doing eg. GC emulation at 1080p.

I'm breaking the NDA but it's so much faster it's not even funny. I don't have a 5090 to compare it to. Nvidia only sent me the 5080 and said "make a video and send it back". Basically it's 4 cards trading hands between reviewers right now. I bought a 5090 with my own money. I'll let you know when it gets here. We'll probably know more by then. But the 5080 is the way to go for gaming. I was told that the 5090 is only like 14% faster in rasterization over the 5080 but that might change with drivers.

Yeah that's fine. I was using the 580 in my main rig until recently so know what to expect.
Right now I have an ancient thinkpad hooked up to the TV to play with family (couch coop or pass-the-pad-when-you-die kind of thing). It can run 2D games like Spelunky and that's about it. I basically just want to replace it with something that can run PS4-era games playably.

Why? That was 3 years ago. Games will still run very well on it for years to come. Relax. The real upgrade is the 5080. I don't think the 5070/ti will be that good. Not that it'll be bad or anything but the 5080 is head and shoulders above the 5070, and according to my "friend" the 5090 won't get you that much more performance, at least at launch. It's definitely for AI more than it is gaming. It's only 14% faster than the 5080. When you're pushing close to 300fps with path tracing, there won't be much of a difference between 270 and 308fps on a 240hz 4k display. The frame times are identical from what I've been told as well but that could be pre-release beta driver shenanigans. Save your money, get the 5080. Don't get the 5070, and don't get the 5090. I say this wanting you to have a good gaming experience.

Yeah it'd be fine for that. Like you said the PSU would be the main problem - maybe look for a different case. For example Silverstone makes some HTPC cases that take standard ATX models. Though the 450W unit in the 202 should be just about enough if you keep the CPU sensible.

I'm not the Nvidia shill FSR4 is a total mess because AMD is absolutely not in a market or userbase position to afford locking their main gimmick to a GPU that'll realistically be 1.5% of the total userbase. Vendor locking your features is the kind of thing you can afford to do when you've got a monopoly or you're sure you're about to have a monopoly, not when your position is shrinking. To be competitive with PC GPUs AMD needs to be doing what the Intel GPU division is currently doing, provide genuinely good value at lower prices even if it's sold at a loss in order to win back market share. Or just exit the PC GPU division and focus on consoles and handhelds.

Ngreedia is a datacenter supply company now idk why they even call their cards geforce anymore they aren't for gamers and they even said that themselves about 5080 and 5090.

Why couldn't shitMD just make a proper high end RDNA4 card? What is the point of 9070 XT that's not even as fast as 7900 XTX? Okay they fixed FSR and FSR4 now has parity with DLSS but what's the point if you have to downgrade to a budget card?
I hate that if you use a white man's OS you are beholden to this retarded fucking company.
I already had to compromise on a 7900 XTX instead of 4090. Now 2 years later I get the option to downgrade to 9070 XT when 5090 releases. Wow. No wonder so many people use Windows when the only competent company in the GPU business makes it virtually mandatory. AMD is such a failure they have me considering using Winshit.

why the fuck does linus claim the 7000 series is more efficient than 7000x?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTiRNnSg0jA
if i just set identical settings in the bios so the motherboard feeds the x and non-x the same parameters i should get near identical performance, no? for example using eco mode while using the x version.
and in the eco mode example the x should slightly outperform in terms of efficiency, right?
is linus simply a deceitful lying rat?

My rig is too old. I need to upgrade, but I don't feel like switching to future proof rig cause a) budget is tight and b) a good solid AM4 build will do the trick for another 10 years.
Problem is, I know I'm right, but I can't really find solid confirmation of this. Most webpages and youtubers are being paid to shill for the new products. I don't care about gaming in 4k, I don't care about a gazillion of fps, but I'm getting fucked sideways cause my 6gb vram isn't enough for 2024 games.
What do you guys think?

Yeah but every RTX card is getting that.
Also I watched their video and they said it requires 4X more compute and I don't know if that means GPU or CPU compute.
If it means it's going to rape older cards to run then I'm at least glad it's not a forced update and you can pick and choose between CNN or Transformer model per title in the app settings.

I remember when it came to Nvidia everyone bought the standard 80 class and 70 class. After RTX came out a lot jumped up to 1080ti and held for years.
But it seems now Nvidia has replaced 80 class with 90 class and 70 class with 70ti.

It's just going to happen like it did with the 4080. $1000 is a price point that just divides people into the two camps, the ones that refuse/can't pay it so go cheaper on 5070ti or the ones that can so just go all in on 5090.
At this point I don't even know if giving the 5080 24GB VRAM like that MSI box showed would have gotten people to want it more.

You guys shouldn't be surprised about the RTX 5080's performance rumors.
It uses a laptop die compared to a real desktop GB202 GPU.
The die area is always going to be restricted for these multiplatform chips, which sets stricter hardware limitations.
Plus, there is no 5080D. The hardware is weak enough to be sold in China.

Obviously I don't expect this to apply to PT, but RTG could fairly point to RT and steal RT as a marketing bullet point for Nvidia in this scenario. PT is basically irrelevant for cards of this tier anyway, unless you're ok with low input resolution reconstruction. Additionally, with FSR4 finally using ML after all these years, RTG could have a comparable Super Resolution in its marketing arsenal as well, fortunately for Radeonfriends. Having both means that RT would actually be viable on Radeon. If Radeon could successfully beat Geforce in both RT value (aka pricing) and performance, RTG could launch a stunning marketing campaign. Not to mention the fact that anons in the know could get some very good cards for cheap.
The above scenario is within the realm of possibility, but of course manage your expectations.

I've said before that RTG hasn't challenged Nvidia on pricing because it knows that it would lose, partially because Radeon has had a shit product to offer as a competitor. AMD heavily challenged Intel on pricing with Zen, after it knew it had a viable product (of course only to raise prices again once it got the upper hand). RNDA4 could be the resurgence of RTG as a force to be reckoned with over the next few generations. Having said that, Nvidia will be pushing hard with new features, particularly regarding the utilization of its tensor cores. Much like DLSS (where Radeon lacked both the hardware and therefore by default the software as well), if RTG is left in the dust regarding either vector operations hardware or associated software support, RTG's competitiveness will likely be short lived. Even by RTX 60, neural shading performance and gfx effects could be a killer feature.
Having said all that, I don't think Radeon will make sense at the high end (i.e., for the 4090 buyer) for the foreseeable future.

At $480 yes, by the time AIBs bring out their "premium" SKUs above $500 it'll be DOA like last gen. We shall see soon I guess. It'd be good if AMD set the "official" MSRP closer to $450 that way if other non-reference cards come in $20-30 higher that would still leave a non-insignificant amount of price distance from the 5070 @ $550. But this IS AMD we're talking about here..

I genuinely don't understand why one would buy a 5080 for 1k, you know retail price for aftermarket will be 1.2k, so why not just pay 2k then for a 5090?
everyone is gonna buy the 5070 and 5070Ti and the 5060 and 5080s will set on the shelves, mark my words.
The pricing should have been as follows:
>5090
>1.7k
>5080
>750
>5070Ti
>550

because retail price for aftermarket will be marked up by the same factor?
kinda feels like you've answered your own question here
they'll be double the price but not double the performance
also, even if they were anywhere close to double the performance $1000+ price differential is pretty steep
for me personally, I'm not an ai fag and I just got a 360Hz 1440p oled on a great sale for black friday
I won't be moving to 4k for the foreseeable future and most of my games/tasks are cpu bound
there just isn't a good reason for me to burn an extra 1k+ on a 5090, but depending on the benchmarks I may want to spend an extra $250 to step up from the 5070ti
also I could have it a little earlier which actually matters to me right now since I finally upgraded from my 8700k + 2070 to a 9800x3d rig so I'm really itching to get the new gpu in here
I'm clearly not your "average" buyer but it seems that my sentiments aren't incredibly rare either

Now realize that we've been living with these damn shitty LCDs for 20 years now after CRTs stopped production.
Have you taken the new CRT Beam Simulation shader for a spin? Supposedly works wonders with high-refresh OLED:

amd figured they needed something to match nvidia so they put out that garbage and said 'but it's open source and it runs on everything!' and so retards ate it up even though it looks terrible
I would rather turn my resolution or settings down than use FSR

it's a shit tier laptop display so no overdrive setting or anything so it's slow as shit and ugly as shit
it's just smear city

have not but aware of it, not like I even need more clarity either
my only complaint about oled monitors is the pixel refresh implementation really, only it
there is nothing else to buy from 4k240 qdoled either, either more refresh but lower res, or tv's
or I buy an lcd
hard choices
