A guy I know said with taxes, that new AMD card could be 500-520€ in France.

I have a GTX1080 and it's getting too hard to play in smooth conditions. But I hate how DLSS makes the image unprecise, and I don't believe in framegen offering a satisfying amount of input delay.

I always found NVIDIA to be a better package, but I'm ready to buy a card that will offer me rasterization at 90fps for the next 6 years. Being 1080p or 1440p.
I trust AMD more on that end and if their card is nice, I'll get it.

There's some smart kids around in the coming gen, and I hope they have opportunities to play games in good conditions for a good price. I don't trust NVIDIA to make a valuable gaming experience for the next years purely out of marketing gains.

Look how well RDNA3 is aging, those are rasterized tests btw.
They're behind in minimums too.
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/gpu-test-system-update-for-2025/2.html

Radeon needs excessively skewed benchmarks like Ratchet and Clank or COD to pad the overall results,
That average FPS still includes Ratchet and Clank test results.
RDNA3 is going to get an inferior FSR4 ML upscaling feature at best.
RTX 20 cards will get the new & improved DLSS4 upscaling that uses a transformer model.

Both AMD and NVIDIA don't want to make good $200~400 video cards anymore, they want to upsell people to at least a $500~600 range of products.
Battlemage B580 was supposed to disrupt this product segment, but their driver and/or GPU architecture relies too much on the single-threaded quality of the CPU.
You need a high-end CPU to get the most out of a sub $300 MSRP B580 card.

Just keep saving money my man, even better OLED monitors are scheduled to be released next year, waiting® for better OLEDs is not a meme.
And they only started to become affordable in the US during the last holiday season ($400 27" AOC QD-OLED).
These current batch of OLEDs will be discounted throughout the year.

Console manufacturers care about having access to cheap SoCs.
The Nintendo Switch is using a fucking 20nm (Maxwell 2.0, Tegra-tier, 2014 tech) APU, the Switch 2 is rumored to be using Samsung's cheap 8nm Ampere process.
The current launch generation of consoles uses semi-custom APUs, consisting of a mobile Ryzen 3700 tier CPU (further downclocked to lower power envelope) and an RDNA 1.5 tier GPU (not RDNA2 because these console GPUs don't have Infinity Cache).

This is the 2nd time someone has tried and brought it out that it was going to reduce the cost, yet the screens that come out cost thousands and often double the cost of LG and Samsung panels.

It remember the "first" OLED monitor that Asus sold based on a JOLED panel, it was pathetic. Something like 80 nits full scene and the color volume was nuked in the process.

I was planning on keep playing games at 60fps and only do 144hz for old ass games. It did something to my brain, 60fps feels laggy and slow as molasses for me now. True, I'm sticking with my 1440p 165hz IPS. Games rarely hit 165hz anyway, at least consistently. An OLED would be better, sure, but I never notice the blacks not being dark enough or whatever, so why spend several hundred dollars to fix a problem I don't have?

They WILL get that cheap, but it may take 7 years or longer. The base of the technology is just much simpler with less layers and assembly (no backlight, no diffuser, no polarizer, etc.). What is holding OLED back from ALREADY being cheaper than LCD is the premium being charged to pay for the amortization of the new tooling costs/R&D which is nearly paid for by now, the cost of the OLED materials themselves which the higher aperture ratio from future MAX OLED will reduce the waste of:
https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1732261280
as well the higher cost of assembly process because currently they are made using vapor deposition which requires a vacuum chamber environment with which to apply them to the surface of the panel. However once the major manufacturers (and important Chinese companies like TCL) switch to inkjet printing cost to assemble will plummet dramatically:
https://videocardz.com/newz/tcl-unveils-21-6-inch-4k-display-using-inkjet-oled-technology

Paradoxically, LCDs are getting MORE not less expensive simultaneously as they are having to add more MiniLED dimming backlights and more robust TCONs to manage them and higher power supply supplies to feed brightness to them just in order to remain competitive with OLED in terms of PQ (especially for HDR).

I would say conservatively 2-3 years? Applied Materials that intro'd the tech already announced that Samsung (makes AMOLED for portable IT displays & QD-OLED for monitors/TVs) is a launch partner for it. The tooling for it is est. @ ~$500M, but that's change for them and importantly since the increase in pixel aperture ratio lets them have more brightness by cramming more of a given amount of OLED material input into the same area (less wastage) that gives them options to:
1. Reduce the number of OLED layers in the subpixel stack (read lowers cost/price) for the same nits/power
2. Reduce the required driving power & heat for the same layer count/nits (Increases OLED lifetime)
3. Increase brightness at the same layer count/expected lifetime
4. Balanced combination of the above (slightly cheaper, brighter, and longer lasting)
So they have a HEAVY incentive from all sides to incorporate the tech into their offerings as soon as possible.

Not only that, the 5090 MSRP was far higher than they expected so they'd have to overcharge even more for their shitty aib designs to pay off the fixed costs of operation over the smaller number of people buying $2000+ GPUs while Nvidia gets to occupy the $2000 price point by themselves

IIRC the LF2 is the better performer but only by dint of being thicker. Of the two I'd take the Lian Li but mostly to avoid those garbage humming P12 fans. With that said if some $20(?) is breaking the budget you probably shouldn't be buying an AIO. No CPU under $500 needs or really even benefits from one.

No consumer CPU "needs" a water cooler. However, on the low end, a Thermalright AIO comes with fans to help with case airflow and costs almost as little as an air cooler, making it a good purchase if your case supports it.

On the high end, no one cares what's "needed". It's about the hobby.

> No consumer CPU "needs" a water cooler.
My nerves really need it. The fans of an air cooler spinning up and down with every spike of workload make my crazy. A radiator can buffer heat much better than any heatsink and increases fan rpm only slowly with temp sensors in the rad instead of cpu core temp used for the fan curve. There is nothing better than a 360 rad in top and it's not that expensive any more.

Bought the $285 14700K, sold my 12700K for about $145 after associated fees.
The new microcode prevents the CPU from requesting fatally high voltages.
The BIOS chip applies microcode (rules) to the CPU before the processor can even train the memory settings.
You can also manually set CPU core voltage request limit in the BIOS, undervolted 14700K wouldn’t need over 1.4V, 14900K/S needs more.

These new NVIDIA tech features are all mostly undercooked, and they were demoing these with PT enabled (4K sub-30fps native render mode).

https://www.techpowerup.com/331041/intel-bartlett-lake-appears-as-a-p-e-core-hybrid-p-core-only-cpus-could-soon-follow
>Intel has launched its first wave of Bartlett Lake processors, introducing hybrid-core models specifically designed for embedded systems, with pure performance-core (P-core) variants scheduled to follow later. The initial release, unveiled at CES, showcases the processors through congatec's new COM-HPC modules. The flagship Core 7 251E leads the embedded lineup with 24 cores (8P + 16E) and impressive clock speeds reaching 5.6 GHz boost. Intel claims this processor outperforms the i7-14700 by 6% in single-core and 8% in multi-core benchmarks, despite maintaining a modest 65 W TDP. The series also includes the Core 5 211E with 10 cores (6P + 4E) and the Core 3 201E featuring 4 P-cores.
Bartlett Lake is officially on the menu. 12 P-Core Desktop chips in Q3.

I want to build a budget HTPC. Haven't done any SFF stuff before. It doesn't need to be in the most compact case ever, but it does need to be smaller than a normal ATX mid-tower. Something like the Node 202 would be nice but could be a bit bigger.

I have an RX580 8GB so was hoping to build around that, but it's not ideal for SFF.
>255mm and full height so not especially compact
>draws more power than its performance really justifies
>so would need a better PSU than the cheapo 300W SFX models which really drives up the cost
Maybe I should sell the 580 and buy something more sff-friendly?

I don't have a specific budget in mind but this is just a fun secondary TV machine so I want to spend as little as possible (all used parts, full bargain hunting mode) and am happy with ~rx580 performance.

Sucks. They're out of production now and have zero competition for the 9800X3D so don't get your hopes up for a quick drop. FWIW getting a 9800X3D at MSRP isn't /that/ hard but obvs that's still a lot more than $300. Alternatively, if you're not buying a 4090 you can get away just fine with a non-3D and the expectation of upgrading later when supply normalizes.

yea ive pretty much resigned to settling with a 7600x until x3d prices are more reasonable, im just mad i missed it
people always say theres no bad time to build a pc because something new is always coming but right now feels like a uniquely shitty time to be building a pc with the cpu situation and next gpu generation less than a month away

Yeah those are Micron memory chips, you want Hynix DDR5 for overclocking.
But the memory switch isn't completely necessary unless you want better 1% lows.
A new Hynix kit would only pay off if you manually overclock the CPU and memory imo.
At least i5s are fun overclockers, your i5 won't OC that well but it can probably match a 12900K in gaming.

the time to build 7800x3d rig was holiday '23 - early 2024
if you're looking to build now either go 9800x3d or some actual budget cpu 7800x3d doesn't really make sense with current pricing
and by the time pricing drops to reasonable levels the 9800x3d will probably be discounted, as well

They're still making 7800X3Ds to meet the 3D V-Cache CPU demand, AMD VP confirmed in a CES interview with PC World.
>Journalist: My question is on the continuing shortages of 9800X3D parts. This is becoming crazy, and nobody can find these processors pretty much anywhere.

>McAfee: What I can say is that we have been ramping our manufacturing capacity — the monthly, quarterly output of X3D parts.
>That’s 7000X3D as well as 9000X3D. It’s crazy how much we have increased over what we were planning. I will say that the demand that we have seen from 9800X3D and 7800X3D has been unprecedented.
