It's nice that things are getting back to normal at work. I'm happy when the holidays arrive, but then I'm also happy when they're over with.

Well thats nice job security is a weird feeling
I do like the man, but I also think it may be my time to finally start looking to leave.
I was thinking when I do to offer to answer questions for them when I am gone or even come back as a 10-99 just to help out as the transition will likely be very rough even though I have almost everything I know documented

Contract ending soon and I can either wait for the extension or try to find something better. Ideally I want a remote job for a us company, since the south euro job market pays like a third of the us or even central europe. From the few jobs I've applied for at burger companies, it seems I'm unlikely to get an interview.
My swe/devops friends are typically sitting on 2-3 recruiter messages on linkedin at any given time, but I haven't had one in months. It's not like I've played the linkedin game, but I'm worried that my contract is going to end and I'll end up doing something terrible like trying factorio.
Maybe I'm being paranoid over nothing and something will eventually stick, but I'd expect at least an interview. Opinions, anons? Do I need to hyperoptimize my cv or some shit?

I need to deserialize and load some data structures into memory. Each one has a timestamp associated with it, but the timestamp is a calculated value... so the timestamp cannot be known until after the data has been de-serialized and fully loaded into the system. The serialized data structures come as a group, so there will be more than one, but they may not be in the correct order (by timestamp). What I want to do is load them all into the system AND have them shifted in time so that the item with the earliest timestamp is set to 0 and the rest of the items are shifted relative to that. The order they are stored in the system does not matter. The data structure does take a time-shift parameter as part of its initialization, and there is also a function to time-shift after it's been loaded. So I can think of two approaches off the top of my head:
1. Load all of them in as normal, keep track of which has the earliest timestamp, at the end calculate the difference from the earliest to 0, and then go back and shift each item by that amount. Would involve looping the list twice though... so like 2n.
2. Keep track of the current shift-to-0 amount, starting with 0. Then, load each item shifting it by that amount. If after loading, the current item would be the earliest, then update the shift amount with the new difference, and then go back and shift everything that's already loaded by that amount (including the just loaded one), and use the new shift amount going forward. In the ideal case, the first item in the list is the earliest, so it gets loaded, shifted, and that shift value gets used to initialize everything after. In the worst case though... every item comes just before the previously loaded item, so the shift amount gets changed each item, and everything loaded so far has to be shifted for every new item loaded... So with option 2, best case is 1n and worst case is a little bit better than n^2.
What should I do?

typically the stock portion is spread over 3 or 4 years, and you get a chunk every year of tenure
so you can think of it as a contractual end-of-year bonus of sorts
whether you can ask for cash instead or not: typically not, but it depends on the company

The whole company — some 1000+ people — from upper management to the lowly office wallahs
seem to be deeply religious (protestant Christians, if I'm not mistaken).
They pray before eating, their calendars talk of God and Jesus,
and they seem to meet up at the weekends to do Bible studies.
I even had an extended discussion with one of them on the original meaning of Christmas
and it having been on the 6th January — something to do with the second coming of Jesus,
and I kept mistakenly conflating it with the Rapture.
I've never come across such a funny bunch; but by Jove,
I can't say that I don't feel welcome, nor that they aren't kind as buggery!
I'm very interested to see, how the social and office-political aspects will develop over the coming months.
Just need to keep my staunchly atheistic world view to myself...

Alas, the only Severance I know of is the film from 2006.

I'm not saying it's not important but it depends on context.
how the fuck would another oblivious retard in uni help you get a job? talk to your fucking teachers (to the ones that have actual work experience outside of academia), talk to people who work in the industry you want to work, find their chatrooms and join them. other students are as retarded as you are.

Would it hurt me to not know how to use VS properly? I'm on Linux so it's VS Code but I hate how it needs to do a bunch of shit in the background for anything to work. I honestly prefer just keeping it minimal, it always works if I just manually compile it in the command line.
Obviously I'm talking about small stuff, I'm a C++ beginner, and I'd like to be able to use VS's debug capabilities but I hate how obtuse it is. I also see some devs like primeagen saying they used vim working at FAANG, although idk how they debugged

I think at this point more than enough evidence has been accumulated and the verdict is decisively in - homosexuals are mentally ill and they were forced to stay in the closet for good reason. Certainly it isn't something that should ever be promoted or tolerated in public at the minimum. I'm not sure we have to go full on throwing them off roofs (though I'm not ruling it out) but at this point it's undeniable that they should be forced back into the closet and then put a lock on the door.

Yeah, what the other guy said: Visual Studio ain't Visual Studio Code.
In fact, they're completely different:
VS Code is an Electron app by Microsoft, extensible via a whole load of extensions. Good for web dev.
VS is Microsoft's behemoth of an IDE, developed over the past 25+ years for C++ and .NET (C#, VB, F#) development. That has your coveted debug capabilities.

Whenever I looked for Linux alternatives most would either say use VS Code or "I just use Vim/emacs". I am unemployed and learning C++ from scratch, I don't think I should deviate much from the norm, I should get used to proper debugging and all of that

It depends what kind of job you want to get. If its' writing Windows software then yes you'll probably want to learn full Visual Studio. It has integrated tools for building, debugging, publishing, testing, deploying, etc... They're all DEEPLY a part of the application. It has its own built-in git implementation even.
If you want to build for anything else though, then learn the various CLI tools for compiling, building, and testing C++ projects (whatever they are, it's been a long time since I did C/C++). Whether you use VSCode or Vim or Emacs is kind of irrelevant since all of them are just code editors and rely on calling the underlying CLI tools to do anything more complex (usually through plugins/extensions).

>say I am looking for $25-30 because I'm desperate and don't want them to pass me up
>position was advertised as $30 to 40
>they offer me $26/hr
I've been here like a month now. It's a lot of being on phone calls which trigger my anxiety, but the environment is laid back and cool. All the guys are nice and we do get some down time occasionally. I really want to ask for a pay bump soon to like $30 or maybe 31/32 though. Doing more work for less pay doesn't feel great, and Panda Express pays the same. After getting laid off twice though and being desperate to find any work my confidence is in shambles, and I feel like I could easily get replaced since I don't have any certs and my knowledge is mid tier at best... Maybe I'll just keep applying to actual companies instead of asking for a raise, I don't know. Thank you for reading my blog/rant.

I'm doing an online masters while working full time.
I've seen a lot of students getting accused of plagiarism or using AI for their code.
I found a lot of posts on the uni's reddit claiming they didn't cheat but they get interrogated for it anyway.
It could be people just pretending to be innocent and they cheated super blatantly, but it would make me feel better if there was a way to make sure automated systems aren't false flagging my shit
I tried grammarly but it doesn't seem like it picks up on code I tried pasting off of stack overflow or geeksforgeeks to test it.

I work for a govt. contractor. The business model is stuffing up more than necessary, hiding underperformers, and getting the real work done by 15% of the actual team. The idea is that we look like we're growing and make more money because everyone is billing the client. As long as the work gets done, the client just thinks that this was what it took to get the job done, and as long as the points of contact interface with the clients nicely and they have good relationships, the client tends to be happy.
Anyway, the past while has been horrible because the higher ups overdid it even by their own standards, and this one really good dev threatened to quit and tell the client about how the company is basically taking them for a ride. I find this admirable, but wandered if that's even legal. Could my employer sue this guy for something if he did that?

Use some note taking app. Joplin is cool

Is being an H-1B really such a bad deal? I'm fed up of Europe. Fuck Germany in particular, but everywhere in Europe sucks. I've done the whole tour.
My plan is to get an H-1B and marry the first decent American girl that I meet, because that is next on the TODO list anyway.
I'm wondering whether I should go to San Fransisco and thereabouts or whether I should aim for lesser known tech hubs like Rayleigh. Honestly, I just want some stability at this point.
At the same time all my skills are in the meme shit like CUDA programming for AI applications.

EU bros I need your take on this: I'm starting to think that pursuing career progression if you live in a non-competitive country is pointless. I'm currently close to 2 YoE and getting paid peanuts, BUT, I do 10 hours of real work in a busy week and have a ton of vacations plus no one on my back. My goal was to get something slightly better, but frankly, there is so much to lose, and I'd be moving to a higher tax bracket too. I think the strat here is to surf the wave, pad the CV with (fake) experience and prepare for something in a different country. Basically what I'm trying to say is that mid level seems to be a terrible deal, more responsibility for little reward.

Im American but you've basically got it down. Middle part of the career sucks. You have a higher salary sure, but you are also expected to actually perform and if you fuck it up and go back down to entry level you seriously fuck up your career. Once you get to like 10yr experience you can coast on your fat salary and savings.

The catch with H1B is that there is a fix yearly quota for newly issued ones(not for renewals), so even if you manage to find an employer who'd sponsor you, there's about a one in three chance that you'd get one at all.
The other potential issue is that it's tied to your employer, so that puts you in a disadvantaged position, but if you convert to a spousal visa ASAP that is a non-issue.
