Ok frens I'm working help desk but am now financially independent enough to quit my job and semi-retire. I'm in my late 20s, I'm obviously quitting and have been planning to quit in a few days but how best to do it given the reason? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I've never been in this position and I'm wondering what entertainment value I can extract here. Reposting from old thread

I learned that my problem was failing at interviews
and that most of my answers to questions are retarded
fucking hell I wish I asked my career advisors exactly what to do instead of going an endless cycle of torment for two years
yeah very cool how was I supposed to know that I'm supposed to say certain words and phrases like a robot at interviews
fuck it I guess better than giving up
any tips on making my resume look unique?

getting through ATS is a crapshoot, it's sorta worth it to edit your resume to mention the requirements as long as you dont lie, and make sure to post *metrics* on your experiences, 2-4 bullet points to the tune of "led x% increase in y service profit through z action"
DONT BOTHER sending your resume to any job older than a day, and DEEPLY PRIORITIZE submitting and looking at jobs on the official career websites, linkedin and indeed are AWFUL for getting interviews
past getting your resume through it literally just comes down to grinding three easily learnable topics
>leetcode
there's only 9 or so algorithm patterns to it, most companies have somewhat well known question banks, and there's a lot of overlap, plus it only takes a couple hundred to "master" it
>system design
harder to grind but it's also much more real world applicable, read read read and practice making diagrams under a time crunch, theres also plenty of communities to mock interview with (cscq discord for one)
>behavioural
much easier to grind than people realize, you have infinite preptime to write down and roughly memorize responses to the top 100 most common behavioural questions, and they mostly have a ton of overlap, if you fail behaviourals it's a skill issue

I've amassed some money from investing/crypto shittery and just job savings over the years. So yeah I can live off of that even with a family, pretty much my savings account interest alone can replace my income fully. I've also got my investments to play around with more too on top of some other passive income. Basically way too much to still work help desk kek

And now I'm making what's technically an upper class salary while being able to work anywhere in the world. Current job doesn't even have scheduled meetings
Quit applying to job ads. Follow tech people on twitter, especially if you have niche skills. Get in the DM's of the founders of early companies. Participate in hackathons. Contribute to open source. Take a job earning a low salary and be one of the few people on the team that actually grinds
Haven't tried this, but one idea is to look at recent YC alums (i.e. they just raised and are possibly pre launch) and DM one of the founders on twitter

Decided that I don't wanna be a wageslave anymore. I try to earn money using AI. Currently I practice generating consistent horror images, add some movement in After Effects and then cut together short movies. AI voice in several languages too. Render them and upload on youtube and see where it gets me. I found channels with 400k+ subs that are doing exactly this but with really shitty graphics. That's why I spend a lot of time to make them really perfect.

Soon to be 25, my stint with college proving unsuccessful, I'm now considering an entry job in tech.
I've used Linux casually for a decade but never fooled around with it super in-depth. Still, I've picked up a lot of terminology.
How hard would becoming a Systems Admin be for someone like me? I feel like I could do it. I know about servers and vms and containers and stuff, just never deployed them myself.

I’m in a niche industry (crypto) so the hackathons for that are pretty obvious. I think the only other industry with frequent hackathons is AI but they’re pretty location dependent (SF)
If you’re interested you can do crypto hackathons and just handle the ‘web2’ side. Look into ETHGlobal which has frequent hackathons & Solana hackathons. Just be proactive about finding a team. You’re almost guaranteed to win at least some money but the main benefit is the deadline & accountability

I am a bit fucking shook.
I just learned that a girl that started at my previous job at the same time as me (so we got to know each other a bit initially), ended up going to big tech and has been working there for a while.
While I was just recently rejected by the same company after an interview.
I helped her a ton at the start when we were working together, she was alright but definitely not exceptional or anything, but I guess that never mattered since she is a woman in tech.
Anyway, that shit would really change my life so I am still not over it, and learning this only made it worse, had to get that off my chest.

Saw enough shit for one day. Linksys took a .50 round and a couple of mechanical keyboards were destroyed in an ambush. The realization that I`m not invincible is slowly kicking in. But with a 9 volt, some detcord, and a couple of magnets attached to the steel mousepad I have in my plate carrier, I believe I will be able to create a sort of electromagnetic deflection field so my enemy`s fire will just curve around me. I`ve ran the raw data past the boys in yospos and so far we still have a green light. Hell, I`ve used wired mice as grappling hooks when tossed into the right nooks. Even if I’m caught I figure the boys in black will give me a job in some blacked out line of work and I will get my pension.

Thats how I got my non tech (EE) job without knowing but the signs were there. The pay is the best I will find for what I do though so I'm kind of stuck now at this company
I interviewed for a position I wasn't qualified for but was interested in, and they really needed the help and I had other experience that made me less of a risk if the role didn't work out. I had 1 interview and a job offer the next day.
Once I started I found out they just had like 3 people quit a month before I joined and zero organization on the team and I was self sufficient enough to be able to operate within such a disorganized nightmare

The shift you're actually thinking about is the transition from slide rulers to calculators. I remember this shit because it was in Michael Abrash's graphics programming black book where he was comparing it to betting on certain optimizations that were just invalidated by better technology.
Regardless, I think having everything handed to you by a chatbot prompt is gonna atrophy your critical thinking skills if you use it as a clutch from an early age. Which'll probably turn into some new form of disability.

Is learning and designing and making Wordpress for boomers from your mom's basement for 2-3 years still a viable way to start a "developer and UX designer" career in 2024?
That's how I started around 2010 at least. (I don't have a degree.)

Whats worse with the 1 page is you lack the context of the job. I add a brief amount of info describing the exact equipment I used and how it was used in the job. Take the E911 system its an emergency phone line system for FAA compliance. Not enough info right, so I added that this phone worked on such and such equipment that does not work on call manager so the future employer can know why I listed that different from CUCM or why its so important. Stick to 2 pages especially since equipment / software skills are important. You can also chuck in there home labs which is important for entry jobs but more important for engineering since certs/college aint everything. You too would hire someone that has built labs with VM's, containers, virtualized networking, servers and linux operating systems.

>housing
I'm canadian and it's fucked. housing on a base is at cost to you, you still basically pay rent unless you were shipped somewhere not your normal home (e.g. for training or just to fill in on one deployment or w/e). it's a chronic complaint that single people with high "operational tempo" (and the people who sail the most tend to be single, since family men have an easier time begging for cushy shore postings because "muh chilluns needs me" while single people get guilt-tripped into covering for them) end up paying out the nose for a home they're only in half the year
>active title 10 do you get your BAH? Do you also get your BAH when you take your GI/Post 911?
i had to look this shit up

up here there's an extra stipend for higher COL areas but as a reservist I don't get it (and wouldn't even if I got a contract locally -- it's real horseshit as currently implemented and seems to basically be there to pay ontario bigwigs more without giving them an explicit raise) and it's not even that much.
>GI/Post-911
no, you just have an admittedly very dope pension and access to financial help. not like "i need an emergency loan" help but there's an office you can call anytime for basic financial advice, and they are partnered with a lot of very mundane but essential services so you get big breaks on stuff like insurance, real estate agents, etc. you have to be currently serving to use our GI bill equivalent for education and such.

It’s hard to really say, you basically have to look on Glassdoor to even get an idea of what these jobs really do. Most of these is like 50% of the time pretending to work other 50% of the time is actually doing work with meetings on the side. Most and it depends on what FAANG company you will work for, since some of them have you doing other work unrelated to the role you applied for.

Indians will hire non-Indians in two related situations. The first is when they've filled up their department with so many incompetent Indians that there's no one around who can actually get the necessary work done. In this case they'll hire a non-Indian and treat them like a slave. The other is they filled their department with Indians, fucked something up badly, and they need to bring in a non-Indian to take the fall for all the Indian fuck ups.
If an Indian suddenly is very eager to hire you, beware that you're being set up.

I just dont want to manage multiple sites for no reason if I don't have too. Basically just my nerdy worldbuilding shit in one category of the blog pretty much is what it would be contained too

Different anon. But help desk requires you to at the minimum have the knowledge of A+ / Net+ so be sure to read and study up on it but skip out on testing. If anything you would take those 2 tests for resume padding purposes only. Sec+ opens the doors for real jobs. Networking certs like CCNA/CCNP are the basis of all IT so if you want to specialize be sure to get the CCNA before moving onto whatever IT specialty you want to.
No one collects all of the certifications due to the way certs do renewals 3-6 years so often you have to specialize or only take certs in 2 domains for added job flexibility. Bachelors and Masters degree's opens doors but its really for management and engineering that you would need it for. Even with engineering they want you to build homelabs/VM's ect so it does not hurt to put what you fucked with on your resume such as building a computer or minecraft server since those fucks get hired into the help desk just fine. There are alot of vendors for certifications so you need to research about what is cross compatible such as Juniper and Cisco are on the same level for the most part.
Studying for the sake of education is fine also but certs take between 2-6 months based upon your reading comprehension, variety of study material and daily time taken for it. Generally if you had A+, Net+, Sec+, CCNA you would have learned more useful material then some bullshit IT degree but your only weak point would be writing emails, tickets, training documents which is a good value of a degree but not enough for the actual on the job training that matters like understanding equipment.

Why tf are they asking for github portfolios and for you to know technologies and programming languages which colleges don't teach?? I have never seen such bullshit in my life. No friend of mine outside of CompSci needs to do this shit. They get hired straight away once they have that undergrad degree and they did STEM not a liberal arts degree. And theres vacancies all the time for jobs yet they'd rather wait for who knows what, I hate kikes so much and all these liberal. If we applied the same economic policies and same racial attitudes which the third reich had we wouldn't be in this fucking mess right now.

Even in my engineering classes in college there was a running joke about how retarded everyone felt from using calculators because they became so reliant on them that they'd punch stuff like 7 + 5 into it.
Meanwhile tradies who do math in their head all day can do pretty complicated arithmetic on the fly.
Using these things really does make people dumber, it's just true, but for some reason this observation really makes a certain type of people angry. I guess they are like progressive utopians and hate anyone defying the progress narrative.

Dont confuse IT with Tech. IT is more akin to mechanic work and yes you need certs/home labs/college/job experience just to get a job but unlike programming you can get away with either college or certifications to get entry. Tech aka coding/programming requires more self education to prove that you can do more then just shower everyday without drowning like the rest of the population.

Others will never know why I make more, but desu should have just saved the OF money I used to pay off university. Feels like if you wanna survive in modern society you need to give up far too much. Exploiting patriarchal wants and bending the knee is how I found my niche, and now I have actual coverage for tranny disease to function better and focus more on my love of tech.

If you have some knowledge you could optimise said code by yourself, but with no minimum comprehension it will be shite

While others watch Youtube during their downtime, study during yours. I did all of the above and I stuck out like a sore thumb. I went from help desk to ITSM in under a year. That was a long time ago though.

I'm pretty sure it's the exact opposite of what you're describing. Writing your own software from start to finish gives you far more experience than being an insignificant cog in some giant tech company. The more apt music analogy is that working at a big company is like being the guy who hits the triangle in an orchestra, whereas writing your own software is like being a singer-songwriter who writes and performs all his own music.
