/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - OILED BULLHIDE EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

>is there a hobnail or flat stud alternative

and has anyone ever gotten a pair of boots stretched in width to better fit them where would you get this done with no local cobblers

I want to know for what reason one would buy suede boots over full grain leather. Like I get it looks nice but isn't it too much maintenance and won't they last shorter?

wear them normally? let them dry on their sides if you get them saturated wet, while you can wear them when its wet outside the wear is increased a lot if you do
>>how do i polish them to a very polished finish
depending on the leather, greasy leather will not accept wax. but you essentially build a new surface with wax and you polish that

thinking
Should I choose the Grant Stone Chelsea or the R.M. Williams Comfort Craftsman? I don’t go out frequently, and the boots will primarily be used for social occasions. I’m open to other suggestions, but I truly love the design of the R.M. Williams pair. However, I’m hesitant because I’m aware that the quality has declined over the years.

i was wondering if there is a nonspike type of stud i could screw in kinda like a traditional hobnail,

>wear them normally? let them dry on their sides if you get them saturated wet, while you can wear them when its wet outside the wear is increased a lot if you do

i just wanted to make sure they wouldnt dry out and the leather sole wouldnt seperate and gap apart like i had a previous boot do. was wondering if there was some type of wax or oil that needed to be put on the soles.

Appreciate your response.

well you would start by buying something with the outsole sewn through and from your pics it doesn't look like it is so you're screwed

Get a boot with an outsole that lasts for ages like Iron Rangers or something. And after a few years when you've finally worn it out then just accept it and be glad it's time to try out a different model/brand.

Or go full chud and resole them yourself. Seen a few videos on YouTube where people do it. Looks pretty fun. And you'd be less sad if you end up ruining ~300 eur boots anyway.

just get a topy layer glued onto the soles and replace it before it gets worn through so you never need to do a full resole.

I thought my pinky was touching the side of the boot in one of my pairs but then I felt with my hand on the outside and realized it technically wasn't touching the actual side. It was sort of touching the top as the boots had low volume toebox. Glad I didn't return them. Went away after some wear and now the boots fit perfectly.

If it's the same for you you'll probably be okay.

this discussion reminded me of Oliberte boots, like pic related.
I don't think they ever became hugely popular and there was some kind of restructuring or something a few years ago where they stopped making a lot of their better-looking models, like pic related. I believe it was called the Ntoto. anyways it's clearly not zero-drop but it looks very close to it, and has a thin flexible sole. I liked how they looked and wanted a pair but then they stopped selling them.

Does anyone here have any experience with Moma boots? I know they're "fashion" boots, I'm not expecting anything to do real work in but I'd like to know if they're well made, durable and worth the price.
The models I've seen are all sleeker than the boots I have now and I think they'd work well in the spring and summer when my fits are less bulky, there's less layering, etc.

Used to do it twice per year but thenbrealized I was doing it too much. I clean and condition about once per year now. Light brushing with a horsehair brush almost on every wear or when the boots look like they need a bit of buffing up.
But if you're asking to gauge how often should (You) do it, it depends on your particular circumstances like your local weather, how much rain, ice and snow your boots are exposed to, along with mud, dirt, etc. A city slicker like me needs to care for my boots way, way less than, say, a forester or something like that.

I'm Italian and I've had the chance to check Moma shoes in real stores more than once. I'll start by saying only the best retailers will have them. You can usually find them in places that sell high-quality americana stuff and expensive Italian knitwear or elegant clothing. Never found them in shoe stores, which is a good sign because shoe stores can be very generic and often keep a lot of junk. The build quality is impressive, even on moc-toe Tyrolean shoes the leather upper was thick and stiff, the whole shoe had a considerable weight and solidity despite being essentially mid-season footwear. Allow me to doubt that the pictures you've seen on a screen are anything "revelatory" of the ruggedness of the leather they use. I know, it often looks pliable and almost drapey, especially on the quarters, but it's a misleading impression given by the pictures: the leather is not soft, but it rather acquires the bendable look from the distressing process that the shoes go through before being placed on the market. And here comes the part that tends to raise controversy and conflicting opinions. The guys at Moma literally put their boots under torture in order to reinforce and harden their structure. They even invented special machines to achieve this. Sort of gigantic washing machines that shake the shoes. Some say it's to give them "the vintage look", but this is vastly inaccurate: even the boots that won't have any fautina or artificial marks still go through the same process. I think they're the only ones in the world who do this, and not by chance they used to be called "the madmen" by the Italian shoes establishment (not anymore today). This said, they're a good company imo, relatively recent but they definitely know how to Blake stitch and how to finish a shoe with great attention to details. Their boots are all different and the leather quality is genuinely good from what I've seen and touched. Also, countless models to choose from, which is a plus imo.

Yeah you aren't getting real double layer panels unless they are $700+ work boots. For casual wear I don't have an issue with it. BUT, I will admit, they way Grant Stone did the Field Boot kind of makes me wish the front was just one panel. But I still love them.

Are there any other sites in the UK to source those kinds of officer derbies and boots? Sellers on ebay charge far too high to their actual worth.

Also, was tar/pitch used as an old sealant? I'd imagine it to be like a taffy that seals the boots internally.

No, they are GYW. Mine have been resoled. Only thing about them is the leather is not going to last as long as others. It's not a full grain leather, and lots of posts online about the leather cracking after a year. I wore mine almost every day for work for a year, and they still lasted through that and 2 more years of casual wear, but the leather is not in good shape. It feels rough to move my hand over, and small fissures are forming.

You did great. They will be comfortable due to all the artificial materials used and the anatomical foot shape which carries no risk of your toes being squished together. Theey also feature a zipper for convenient on/off. They appear to be fully gussetted to keep snow out. They have a draw cord at the top to keep snow out. They have an pull loop for easy on/off. The tread seems adequate for snow. Plus, you can replace them for about the cost of resoling a gyw boot. 10/10.
