/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - SUPERIOR CONSTRUCTION EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

The chukka is the coolest and manliest shoe in existence. Chelsea boots are too feminine and gay, if you wear sneakers you need to grow up, oxfords and derbys are boring, service boots make it look like you are compensating, loafers are for twinks that take it from the behind. Nothing gives you the cool, rugged, masculine, but also put together appearance like a nice suede chukka.
Chukkas. Are. King.

oil tan will be more water resistant BUT the oilier surface means dust will stick to it more than a dry tan, which will get into the flex points and wear down faster if not regularly brushed. different leathers will be more suited for different uses

Using oil based conditioners is usuay recommended to use more sparingly. I've heard it argued (in outdoors/hiking circles) that mink oil in particular can make the leather too soft if used too frequently, which could make it more susceptible to damage from sticks and rocks.

Tldr use wax for regular maintenance and water proofing. Oil based once or twice a year when you do a more thorough cleaning, depending on how much you use your boots. There's also a variety of conditioners with various types of oil and combinations for different leathers like more sensitive fine leathers goods.
You don't want to use the smelly tar based stuff for hiking boots on your Hermes handbag.

I guess the ideal boot would be something like those leather sole mocs but with a 1-2mm thick sticky rubber sole those minimalist shoes use.
Footskins kinda does that with their wrap around rubber soles. Very thin and flexible.
https://www.footwearbyfootskins.com/leather-footwear-details.aspx?pi=45
>Big retard toes
True moccasins are constructed very differently to boots. The midsole is one full piece of leather that covers the entire bottom of she shoe and is stitched up to the moc toe. Because of this moccasins are much more flexible and can "spread out" to make room to fit your foot.
Ideally as with all boots trying them on would be helpful but they don't have stiff Ridgid sidewalls that hold your foot in place the way regular boots do.

kinda yah, im not even that big on them being barefoot type shoes, i just walk in a weird way so when shoes have elevated heels it doesnt do great things to my feet
>moccasins are much more flexible and can "spread out" to make room to fit your foot
i see.. i guess it would just be easiest to try a pair and see if it lets me spread my toes out like i usually do when i walk
on the ideal shoe though, itd probably be more of a hard leather boot with a wide enough toebox + the other stuff i already talked about
im aware that jim green exists but their shoes do look kinda ugly unfortunately
honestly i wish i just had normal smaller feet, i cant even get those nice creme slippers like >>18354106 suggested since my feet are like a size too large, black and brown really arent slipper colors

The biggest issue for me is the lack of arch support. They're copying a PNW style boot without putting enough support in, it's just sloped so your foot is going to be sliding forward compared the same style boot from other brands.

Will people actually noticed the difference? I don't know. If you're buying "real" PNW boots, you probably won't be buying Thursdays version. But if all you've been exposed to are boots around Thursdays price point, would you feel compelled to try their newer, more expensive model?
I don't think it's necessarily a bad boot, I'm just wondering who they're trying to market it to.

My John Lofgren Ludlow boots finally came in. The texture on the horsebutt is incredible, it's not quite kudu levels of dramatic but it's still easily noticeable. It's also more visible than my Vibergs, those have a more subtle texture. It's interesting to compare the quality from two tanneries, the Viberg leather is from Maryam and the Lofgren is from Shinki. I'm not sure how much of the textural variation is due to difference in tanners or how much is just individual variation.

I wouldn't say one mogs the other, just that it's an interesting detail for fellow autists.
Realistically, no one is going to see the texture on either unless they're up close enough to lick your boots. I am very curious now as to whether this would be a consistent difference between the leather from Maryam and Shinki, like the texture is a conscious choice/house style. If anyone here has any horsebutt boots from either maker, let me know what sort of texture yours have.

Prefer lesser texture myself like the Vibergs but sometimes stuff like that shinki really works. Just seen too many of those high texture leathers where the left boot looks completely different from the right boot or the different panels looks almost like they're using different leathers. Although with the price you're paying for Lofgren I'd suspect they'd do it right

Excellent point, I didn't even consider that. With kudu differences in texture are fine as long as the color/shading matches. Same with rambler leather, I've got a pair of Truman boots in coach rambler and there are visible differences between the left and right boots but that's sort of the point with that pattern/texture. With something that's supposed to be more uniform I'd be pissed if there were large differences between my Lofgren boots, luckily the pattern is very even between the two.

It's not, far from it. It's just incredibly expensive and time consuming. You're looking at months of time if the cobbler is local, possibly longer if they're not and you have to travel to them.

Unless you have an extremely oddly shaped foot, the odds are you don't need a bespoke shoe.
The only shoe that makes sense to go bespoke for is loafers, because they are an absolute bitch to size right even for normal feet.

This one? It's not a missing stitch. The stitch was either poorly finished or it's coming undone.

Shitty stitching aside, I was referring to them also using different cuts of leather with different nap for the same boot which leads to ugly wrinkles.

TLB uses rocado shell cordovan and it costs almost $300 more than their calf artista line
that is not worth it
just get their regular shoes if you want TLB and carmina, C&J or alden if you want shell

if it's not horween shell cordovan, then it's just a waste of money
their shell is just miles above the rest and costs practically the same as the competition

shinki is second best, but can't hold a candle to horween
it holds up fine, but their finishing is worse
it's meant for small leather goods, like bags and belts for the japanese market, not shoes
the colors are more vibrant and are meant to stay consistent when the leather is flexed, it just doesn't age as nice on a shoe (or anything else frankly)
if the japanese want a cordovan shoe, they just get alden

rocado and all the other italian shell is just bad, supposedly it's gotten better over the years, but it's still quite nasty
it's looser than horween or shinki, stains a lot, stitch holes tend to develop into cracks on some pairs
maybe TLB knows how to work with it, but i wouldn't bother

Happens to everyone it seems like. One "problem" with being a boot YouTuber is that a pair of high quality boots will last you possibly even a lifetime. So like all you really need is like maybe 2 pairs for winter and 2 pair for summer or something, and then whatever else for special occasions. That doesn't amount to a lot of videos lel. So either you just make a few videos a year and don't grow your channel or you keep buying/gifting boots every month and then they all have more boots than they could ever use in 10 lifetimes, and none of them get enough use to actually justify a real review.

Best boot reviewers are the ones that aren't boot YouTubers.

You would think more time and posts would be dedicated to boot upkeep, care, and longevity.

My question is about Mink Oil - I've seen a lot of debate on whether or not mink oil is good for boots. Seems like its been used for years and years and recently the opinion, mainly driven by multiple subreddits, is that Mink Oil is actually detrimental to boots. That the mink can damage the leather, stitching, etc.

Anyone have any experience? I used it yesterday on two pairs of my Thorogood work boots - they seem fine for now but obviously I haven't used them much since oiling.

mink oil is only useful for work boots in very rough conditions. for everything else it's excessively oily and will darken your boots significantly

>The break in was one of the longest and most uncomfortable break-ins I've ever experienced. While they did fit, they were snug, and I knew that I wanted to start with a slightly more snug boot and end with something really form fitting than something comfy out of the box and slightly too big after a few months of wear. More or less opting for a performance fit. I had to wear them for minutes at a time, unlaced, then longer and longer periods of time laced, skipping certain hooks to avoid hotspots. I’d say that I didn’t actually walk in them for any extended period of time until about 3 weeks in, and I’d have to swap out to something more comfortable if I wore them too long. Only started wearing them daily a month and a half into the break in, and only managed to wear them for an entire day uninterrupted maybe like 3 weeks ago.

Worst break in I've ever had was probably my Iron Rangers and they took a week. After a week they were fine, but that first week was rough
Worst shoe break in was actually some Cheaney loafers. I would wear them to work and bring a change of shoes to change into after a few hours. It took a few weeks before they stopped hurting

The Beckmans, on the other hand, wrre a nightmare, but partially that was on me because I should have gone half a size up in hindsight. My Trumans were a bitch to put on at first, but once my foot was in they were pretty comfortable and have only improved with use. I can now put them on in a matter of seconds.

>First of all, it wouldn't be worth making a 1/1 custom pair for some youtuber's review
What? Companies spend millions on marketing, a high quality handmade pair of boots can be had for what, $1000? $3000 on the absolute higher end? And that's the cost to you with profits factored in, the cost to the company would be much lower, absolutely worth taking their best worker aside and having them do a pair of boots with the utmost care, swapping cheap stuff like plastic heel stiffeners for leather and such, picking their best sections of leather, doing proper QC, etc.
>even if it was that would be such a huge liability. If it ever got out it would destroy the company, no one would ever trust them again.
Meh, companies change their manufacturing process without telling anybody all the time, wouldn't be the first time someone bought a piece of clothing/footwear from a reputable brand only to find out it's shit and not at all as other people said because they're cutting corners and moved their production to some fourth world shithole that's even worse than China 6 months ago. And people will keep buying them for years on end because whatever influencer they paid has much more reach than any disgruntled customer willing to make an online post about it.

Ok I admit I didn't think enough about the 1/1 pair thing, of course a company would mnake a custom pair for a youtuber, but they wouldn't send him a better one and pretend that's how they make all their boots. The Ferrari comparison doesn't work because that's a sports car (luxury) and these are heritage boots (blue collar). Different customers and totally different expectations. As soon as it came out a boot maker did that it's over for them.

Thing is, these aren't normie companies, heritage boots are very niche. They can't just change their production and have no one notice or care. We have literally seen makers like Allen Edmonds, Alden, and Florsheim go down in quality, and we don't buy them anymore. They pivoted to normie customers to survive. The White's Perry boot wasn't made well enough for us so they made the Perry Selects. Point is, we are the customers that notice things, and the companies that want us as customers can't do things like that or we go away.

Have you tried women's boots? A lot of them are similar to the male versions but smaller. Maybe buying one size bigger (most brands seem to only go as low as 38EU) and adding heel, tongue pads, thicker insoles to make up the difference would work? Otherwise you'd have to go MTM which is $$$.

You should post them anyway. The only downside to JGs is that they don't polish the edge of the leather pieces, which is why sissies ITT call them "ugly". Otherwise, JG get you materials and build quality of boots double the price at the cost of slightly less detailed finishing touches.

There are no "official" sellers of Solovair boots here in Australia. Are they actually that much better than Doc Martens? I don't know if it's worth the hassle of ordering from the UK and finding out I got the wrong size and having to send it back when I can easily get a pair of Docs here in every shoe store.

I'd like too but its not easy to find brands that do them. For example I really like Truman boots but they just don't do women's and their lowest size is 40 in EU. As for adding pads and everything I have tried that before but I found it extremely uncomfortable, maybe I did something wrong I don't know but it ended up tightening too much particularly around the bridge of the foot. I guess I'll have to try again if I can't find a way around that

Neither Solovair nor Doc Martrens are boots, but yes, Solovair are a bit better, but not so much better to bother with import costs on top of the cost of the shoe. They are the same thing, Solovair just has maintained more of the original quality than Chink Martens.

I recently purchased my first pair of boots in years, a pair of 14-inch logging boots from Buffalo Boot Co. that were made in the US. The boots were a great deal at $180, but upon arrival, I discovered they had screw-in spikes. Unfortunately, I accidentally cut the side of the boot while removing the spikes, but I was able to repair the damage.

Now, I'm looking to replace the spikes with hobnails or studs, but I'm having trouble identifying the type of spikes that were originally installed. Can anyone provide some insight into what type of spikes these might be?

Additionally, I'm looking for advice on how to achieve a polished look on my boots and care for the leather soles. I want to prevent them from drying out and cracking, so I'm looking for recommendations on the best products and techniques to use.

Specifically, I'm looking for suggestions on:

Identifying the type of screw-in spikes that were originally installed
Replacing the spikes with hobnails or studs
Achieving a polished look on the boots
Caring for the leather soles to prevent drying out and cracking
Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
