Tales of use to be my go to jrpg I was such a fan I modded my ps2 to be able to play imported version of destiny remake, rebirth and destiny 2. Since Xillia this series has been dogshit to me and pure garbage. Xenoblade and trails are now my go to kino jrpg.

The real problem is that most Tales fans start a new game expecting it to be the next "Abyss/Vesperia/Destiny/whatever their favorite Tales game is" and when it goes wrong at a single point, they automatically hate them.
in my case, I love Zestiria's world, characters, music and setting despite the game doing them wrong. I had fun with Arise, despite the cast, world, music, story etc being forgettable. would even play it again btw.

Zhonecage was trash. Abyss probably has the comfiest post game dungeon. Labyrinth of memories is fun too since it's one huge boss rush but the fake gald part to fight the ex boss kinda sucks. Xillia 1's let you save in the middle so if you're into that it'll probably be the best one. The rest all I remember being insanely grindier than the others

I don't think levels play that much of a role, if at all. Accuracy and Evasion definitely do. If the boss is shrugging off your attack, regardless of your and its levels, dualize a bit to pump up those stats.

Symphonia is still the overall best game in the series. It's the one I return to the most. And that has nothing to do with the fact it's my first.

I'm almost to the Kurt boss fight, and I'm currently on Evil. I remember him being a huge pain in the ass when I played through this game the first time and I was either on Hard or Moderate at the time. I'm simultaneously dreading and looking forward to the fight, especially since I'll need to beat him at least twice. He's one of the 60 second trophy bosses, but I'm using Malik and the little bonus scene that pops up when you kill the adds and have Malik on the team doesn't stop the clock.

The writing in Zestiria is... not good. Noticeable from the get go when it's just Alisha and Sorey in the village and it's like, none of their fucking sentences flow well together. It's so bad. And it does nothing but get worse especially lore/world building-wise. The combat's bad, the fucking upgrade system is a nightmare...
There's a reason Edna is the one thing that stands out from this game for everyone that plays it, not only the Edna schizo. Her presence, dialogue and delivery... she's a ray of sunshine during a category 5 hurricane. What a shit game.
