At some point the writers made Viktor associate his dream with Jayce and viceversa. It's why he didn't leave when their paths diverged and Jayce spent more time politicking or when Jayce called zaunites dangerous. Yes, Viktor no longer trusted Jayce like he used to but they made up quickly after he almost killed himself. It took him knowing that Jayce broke his promise and made hextech weapons behind his back to finally leave, and even then he wanted to see Jayce again in episode 5 despite knowing he made weapons that could've been used to kill his people, and in episode 8 he called everything he did "our work". He believed everything he did in the commune was a continuation of their work. Likewise, Jayce dismissed the fact that Viktor got Sky killed, and wanted to resign from the council and leave his role as the face of Piltover behind so he could stay with Viktor in the lab. And by the end, he said in his own words "I thought I wanted us to give magic to the world. Now all I want is my partner back" which is crazy and a huge deal for him since he was obsessed with his dream since he was a kid. The writers made them revolve around each other too much in season 2 and the relationships Jayce had with other people suffered for it, especially the ones with Cait and Mel. It's all the writers' fault and I still don't understand why they did that.
