Call me a pseud, but Christopher Doyle is still the camera guy for me. It's like we're dancing~ when we watch and isn't that what moving pictures are all about? Steady shots of trees are nice, but when you get down to it, we should be in motion

>they're like all one hour long so it's easy to make and he is just fucking around with his friends relaxing basically, improv dialogue and shit
>but Lav Diaz keeps making the same movie over and over with that movi being gorillion minutes long, shot in some primordial jungles, intricate framing and shit, why is he putting so much effort into making the same fucking movie about the totalitarian regime that Phillipines had in the 70s raping and killing poorfags and commie "intellectuals"?

Because he's getting paid to do it.
It's just a job.
If he tries to make a movie about anything else he will get no funding.

Love & Pop
>>208049383
>Question of the Day
That old digital video look is by far my favorite visual style. Lots of directors did it, but Anno's Love & Pop remains my favorite example. Something about how raw, intimate, and unadorned the aesthetic is appeals to me. The lower resolution, the unconventional framing choices due to the small size of the camera, and the unfiltered digital colors create a sense of immediacy and grounded lo-fi charm.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvwJVI_CTME

If anyone has recs for movies with a similar aesthetic, I'd be grateful.

Schrader
>The Book of Ashes
>A reclusive former professor, haunted by a scandal that destroyed his career, takes a job cataloging the personal library of a mysterious millionaire in a remote mansion. As he delves into the library's esoteric volumes, he uncovers a web of secrets about the millionaire's past—and his own—leading to an existential reckoning that forces him to confront his darkest desires and deepest failures.

PTA
>Golden Hour
>In 1970s Los Angeles, a charismatic but deeply insecure photographer becomes the center of a volatile group of aspiring artists, models, and hustlers who orbit his studio. As the city’s bohemian dream begins to fade, their relationships unravel under the weight of ambition, obsession, and the fleeting nature of beauty.

Tarantino
>Reckless Justice
>In 1980s Texas, a former stuntwoman-turned-bounty hunter teams up with a charming con artist to track down a notorious drug lord. As their quest spirals into a blood-soaked, neon-drenched odyssey, they discover their real enemies might be the skeletons in their own closets.

Korine
>Trash Palm Oasis
>In a decaying Florida beach town, a misfit group of outcasts—skaters, drifters, and wannabe influencers—spend their days navigating surreal misadventures and self-destructive fantasies. As their fragile world unravels under the weight of gentrification and personal chaos, they cling to an unattainable dream of escape, even as it slips further out of reach.

Bergman
>The Hour of Silence
>On a secluded island in the Swedish archipelago, a retired theologian and his estranged daughter confront their fractured relationship, unspoken grievances, and the weight of faith and mortality during an oppressive, sunless winter. As the days stretch into an eerie, endless gray, their isolation becomes a crucible for truth, guilt, and redemption.

Rossellini
>The Bread of Tomorrow
>In post-war Southern Italy, a widowed schoolteacher struggling to raise her two children becomes embroiled in a conflict between a group of impoverished farmers fighting for land reform and a wealthy landowner desperate to maintain control. As she is drawn into their struggle, her ideals are tested, and she must choose between her principles and her family’s survival.

Mizoguchi
>Threads of the Chrysanthemum
>In Edo-period Japan, a skilled but impoverished silk weaver must navigate a treacherous web of betrayal, sacrifice, and societal expectations when her artistry attracts the attention of a powerful merchant. As she struggles to protect her craft and her dignity, she uncovers the cost of beauty in a world defined by rigid hierarchies and quiet oppression.

It has great cinematography, the problem is that nearly every major crime/action film has tried to copy it's aesthetic and tone for the past 30 years, even down to it influencing a lot of capeshit cinematography.
Also, forgot to mention the influence of Michael Bay as well.

I'm trying to get seriously into film and one thing that I am unsure about is what are the basic movies you need to watch to be on the same page with other movie buffs? After all there is an insane amount of movies out there and it feels nearly impossible to have seen the same movies as someone else. Surely I am not meant to spend 5 years watching 3 movies a day to catch up to people with 5000+ movies watched? Does it even make sense to talk about movies in general and not a specific movie you just watched or someone who is into a specific genre, country or director as you? Might be a strange question but I want to talk about film IRL and I don't know when I am ready so I don't embarass myself with my lack of knowledge or bore people.

Watch the best works of Eisenstein, Kurosawa, Godard, Welles, Fellini, Hitchcock, Lean, and Kubrick as a baseline.

Both things will happen no matter how many films you watch. There will always be someone out there who knows way fucking more than you about film and you’ll look pathetic next to him, and there’s always someone who will instantly get bored when you talk about film to them even mainstream shit
Stop giving a fuck and either actually watch cinema or kys

Do people who didn't grow up with low resolution stuff find it more appealing than people who did? I grew up with shit quality everything, and nowadays I adore the highest production, highest visual quality I can get, meanwhile zoomies that have only known 4K seem to be obsessed with lowres, and it extends to their music taste, where they seem to want a resurgence of lofi music

Yes it does. At a certain point you are a fan of cinema. Not specific movies or directors. You can tell someone's level of experience based on whether or not they're able to talk about the art form, instead of just specific movies or directors.
