I have a plenty of pentax glass with k-mount I bought for my DSLR and a whole bunch of m42 lenses while I never had a pentax film camera.
Which one is the one to get? So far I've done a little reading and choice seems to be between either MX or LX. Are there any other models to be on the lookout for?

The MX would be a better option over the LX unless you find a really good condition LX. Feature wise the LX is tempting, but its a fickle camera with a lot of expensive things to go wrong. Love mine, but an MX is just a safer bet. The MZ-S is good if you don't mind the modern styling aswell.

I feel the same way, but for me it's kind of pretentious: A DSLR feels like it's capturing an image once you see it on the back screen, instead of taking a screencap of the EVF stream. Especially if you use electronic shutter and burst modes with the mirrorless camera. Unfortunately I'm stuck with mirrorless because I bought the lenses.

It's hilarious how good the K1 is with Pixel Shift but i have never been convinced about the glass in terms of price and variety.
If i ever get one i think of a kit composed of 15-30 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, FA Limited 21, 43 and 77 and maybe the 50mm f1.4 Golden Star... yet there's no cheap 200-5/600 f5.6 and no cheap f2.8 and below after the 85mm range, or at least cheap compared to Nikon/Canon, because the difference between a Nikkor 180 f2.8 and the Pentax version is just too much.
Also the old lenses have soft rubber rings, come on now. It's been years and the glass just isn't convincing.

Wrong, your subject (green zone) is clearly the trail and the background (second red zone) compliments it due to leading lines pointing or going parallel with the leading line of the subject (shown in orange pointers) like the water body and the other trail, trees all give pauses and framing, including the ones in the foreground (first red zone).
If we could see the water body more clearly, as in no vegetation to cover it, it would be much nicer. But there is a subject, not wanting to see it means lack of discerning theory or >>4373241 a coping mechanism.

This is handheld f1.8 with the plastic da50 with the k70. The focus was on the eye.

I think there is a little softness at max aperture based off this and a couple of other test pictures. I posted a f1.8 test pic with the same lens of some silverware in a blue cup from my kx in a previous thread. It also had a little softness.

It's hard to tell against the screw mount without a direct comparison. I think the bokeh may be smoother with the da50.

Does anyone have any strong opinions about the K-5 vs the K-7? I want to pick up one of them. I've been wanting a weather sealed crop body for a travel camera. I have the K-01, and I quite like the sensor and it is basically the same sensor as the K-5. But part of me wants to experiment with the older sensor.

I am also looking at two lenses, the Pentax SMC Pentax-DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL DC WR and the Pentax-HD Pentax DA 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR

I'm temped to go with the 18-135, it's smaller, lighter, and cheaper. I'm not particularly fussed about image quality and I doubt I'll use the wider fov, but the 16-85 is only like ~$30 more.

Thoughts?

Ironically I was considering the K-7 Because it'd be noisier I've started shooting all my digital bodies around 400-800 iso because I like a little noise in my images. But I was also really impressed with my K-01 at 8000, considering. I did find a good deal on a K-5 on ebay, so I put I bid in. If that doesn't work out, maybe I'll look more at the K-7

Are there premium manual focus lenses for K mount? I've used a few Voigtlanders and Zeiss lenses over the years and I'm getting a hankering for them again but looking around it doesn't look like either company really made lenses for the mount. on ebay there are a few Zeiss lenses, but they are wildly overpriced. So what are my options? Should I adapt from another mount?

voightlander makes/made k mout lenses, i think zeiss did too. there are some nice small modernish colour-skopar voightlanders in native k.
there is a way to convert nikon zeiss to k mount, its called zk mount. there was a boomer on pentax forums who was in to it.
seems like a waste of time to me when the limiteds are better in everyway except artificial benchmarks and clout. especially if you are paying zeiss money, just get a second camera

That close up looks pretty sharp, but it does seem something's off with the far focus. It seems like some area should be sharp.

I took some more pictures in my living room with the K-70 from farther away 10-15 ft and I would say it was equivalent to what you see with the figure with the light softness, but no drastic changes. The figure picture gives a good idea of what to expect.

I also tried with the K-X and I was having a lot more trouble with the focus, but at least one of the f1.8 looked similar.

Probably any of the new 50s would be sharper just because it looks like something's off. The macro 50 is sharp at 2.8, its widest aperature.

yes, used. I was mistaken though, it was like a $50 difference. The 18-135's go for about $150, there was a copy of the 16-85 on mpb for $200 with no hood, I should have grabbed it because now it's gone. I think the extra telephoto reach on the 18-135 wouldn't be used. But it is a smaller lens which is appealing to me, I'm not picky about optical quality. I guess it's just a matter of 'which do I buy first'. I want to try them out and see how I get along with each of them.

I think I preferred the version of this one you said was underexposed, but it is a nice shot. I really like the color of the sky and the light on just the buildings.

So I've been digging into my menus more and reading the manual a bit and the TAv mode is easily one of the best features I didn't know I wanted. It's great for shooting handheld in low light. It also seems good for dynamic environments. I know I've definitely missed shots because I saw something while in aperture priority and wished I had been in shutter priority to capture something with motion blur and it was too slow to change. I'm definitely going to play around with it some more.

I'm considering a Pentax DLSR because I have a specifically autistic desire for having the option to use the same lenses for both film and digital (ideally without adapting). I already own a Program A and a SMC 50/f1.4.
How is the experience of using these older lenses on the K-1/K-1Mk2?
Are the newer Pentax full frame lenses backwards compatible with the Program A? I know the focus rings tend to be quite quick and slippery on the new ones having owned a 20-40/f4 Limited - does anyone with experience consider this annoying?
How is the manual focusing experience in the K-1(/Mk2)? Is there an electronic focusing confirmation aid; is the focusing screen interchangeable for a split prism screen?

Aren't most EF lenses a bit bulky to be adapting for mirrorless cameras? Seems to defeat a major pro of using mirrorless over DSLR. Would rather have a chunky body with a small lens than the opposite. I know EF has a shorter flange distance than F so the problem isn't as pronounced for Canon but still.
Besides Pentax my other idea was to get a used last or previous gen Nikon DSLR platform for the Voigtlander lenses that are also perfectly compatible with my F3 and do better on digital than the equivalent AI-S.
The last (and probably most rational) alternative would be to grab a 1V to complement my 5D4 as I do have a couple EF lenses already.

I use pentax digital bodies and pentax mx with the same pentax and adapted lenses and as long as they have aperture rings will work on both and the A lenses will also be able to shoot on digital in aperture priority mode as the aperture can be controlled from the body. With M lenses you have to go to manual mode and use the green button to measure the light before shooting.

It's a hipster brand. Nothing more. Pentax is borderline out of business and no longer improving. In fact, if their newer FF lens and body lineup says anything, they have gotten significantly worse. The K1 had reliability issues with the meter glitching out and part of the mode dial falling apart internally, and the K1-II forces raw noise reduction for every photo that reduces its low light shadow pushing ability (sony does something similar if you enable shading correction in camera but at least you can turn it off).

The only thing they do that nikon does not is put weather sealing on their cheapest aps-c junk. Instead their cheapest trash has aperture failures. Yes, I know they have IBIS. They don't have a native tilt shift lens and OIS lenses are as effective as pentax's third rate IBIS. K mount can't adapt SHIT either. The autofocus is notoriously slow and a bit inaccurate. For a photographer these are overpriced, oversized cameras with significantly reduced utility unless you already own a mountain of K mount lenses.

So why is it a hipster brand? Because the pentax k-1000 was the default camera for most photography school students so hipsters buy a pentax to feel like they are more of a real artist than just another "camera guy". So they just have to hate other brands (often irrationally) to cope after spending a boatload on a k3-iii and a bunch of mirrorless priced lenses with SLR performance.

If you don't hate yourself get an a7c and weather sealed tamron glass. It's as durable as any pentax, if not more because there is less to fail.

rate the new e-waste, i paid $304 + $12 shipping + $28 sales tax = $344. ricoh refurb has the same setup for $529 + $46 sales tax or $470 body only. i feel like i overpaid just a little. hoping its okay and not clapped. it does have a little bit of wear on the ears for the neckstrap.

i kinda always wanted a actual DSLR because i love the slap of the mirrors when you hit the shutter. its just a cool sound that really makes you feel like you're taking a photo. even though the autofocus on these things suck especially for what i mostly take photos of (aircraft + cars) i think for what i paid its worth it as a toy. i fell in love with the kf when i was first getting into photography and went to a store to play with cameras. it just felt cool. i ended up buying a nikon z50 and used it for 4 months before i sold it for what i paid for it.

currently im shooting with a sony zv1 (point and shoot w/1in sensor and 24-70mm lens) which im probably not gonna get rid of, only because i can stick it in a pocket.

other considerations:

snoy a6000 + 16-50 and 55-210 kit lenses ($400, locally, but then all my stuff would be sony and it feels too similar to what i want in the future)

canon 5d mark 3 for $400 (but i already wanna pick up a a7iv/a7r3 + 50-300mm or 28-200 tamron in the future after my tax return)

what lenses should i pick up? i definitely want a 300mm zoom lens with AF.

First pic out of that $340 KF, turns out it has 3120 shutter counts. Actually looks pretty damn good for SOOC jpeg. I just resized it so its not a 12mb file. Camera itself was filthy like someone didn't wash their hands after eating

Already ricing it out. Spent $20 on a used charger + 3 batteries, $10 on a shoulder strap, $75 on a 55-300mm f4-5.8 Pentax SMC DAL Lens, $32 on a Quantaray/Sigma 28-90mm f3.5-5.6 Lens, and $20 on a Promaster (Tamron 278D) 80-210mm f4.5-5.6

Last 2 Lenses are SLR lenses from the late 90s

If I really like it I might go pick up the 55-300mm PLM lens, but I'll see how far I go with the current lenses I bought. Next lens will be a $50 50mm f1.8 Pentax DA Prime.

Pentax lens selection SUCKS imo, you gotta wade through lots of trash to find gems.

The pictures stay black if its in manual mode and I'm trying to take pics wide open/wide closed with the same shutter/iso.

Av mode they look the same (but it's adjusting the shutter to compensate). And the aperture is definitely changing both with the OVF and in live view if I set it to auto or AV mode (it'll change the aperture size when I hit the shutter button, not as I'm setting aperture in the settings)

I think I'm just overthinking it and I'll keep using it. Its not under or over exposing pictures and I do 90% of my shooting in auto for most cameras.

As far as I know, the KF is completely unaffected and the K70 has been unaffected after a certain manufacturing date. Maybe check if your EV compensation is all the way negative for the manual mode, but I don't know. It seems like it could be a setting issue somewhere

I think I'm just gonna run it and worry about it when it actually starts giving me blacked out photos. If it dies it dies and I upgrade to a K3 or K3II (they actually cost the same exact as the KF at $400~ or so...which makes me wonder why I even bought one). I do like how it feels in hand and the colors/IQ on the kit lens. I'm so far at $520 spent.

I think my biggest problem with this camera ecosystem is the lens availability. Canon has better DSLR lenses, Nikon has better DSLR bodies. I think your average Pentaxian is someone with a bunch of K mount film lenses who refuses to upgrade or someone who bought a K5/K30/K50 10-15 years ago when they were still pretty competitive. Even the WR/build claims are eh when the low end ones are prone to aperture block issues and the CanoNikons are proven worldwide at this point.

I might try a Sony Alpha DSLR next (a390 for the 14mp CCD sensor), I actually think Sony might have better lenses.

The M (or any) mode won't apply adjustments to the EV compensation. This is the page from the manual. Adjust it to 0 if it's not to start figuring out what's going wrong.

Just in case we're talking about different exposure things, you have to set ISO in M mode. So your ISO could be too low.

This seems fixable, but it's hard to tell exactly why the M is giving black pictures without being there.

I don't know about any of those zoom lenses, but the 50 f1.8 can put out some really good, sharp pictures.

Unironically the K7 has weird stuff wrong with its sensor. The K5 is an identical camera with the issue "fixed"

its hard to explain but its apparent once you get a K5.

Is this worth buying as baby's first film camera? The lens goes for $40-50 on its own. The camera body is a SFX SF1.

I think the cmos sensor in K-7 was manufactured by Scamsung. It doesn't have much highlight detail.

Should I get a 35mm 2.4 or 50mm 1.8 DA lens? MPB has them cheap ($64 and $50), going on a crop sensor for general walk around photos.

Actually really like how the pics come out on this KF. For a $350 camera its pretty damn good. I'm waiting on a 28-90mm Quantaray + 55-300mm DA-L Pentax + 35mm f2.4 DA Prime to arrive next. I wasn't taking more pics earlier because I just got a charger for it (batteries went flat) and I freaked out after I thought I killed it using a 90s flash on it (Sunpak 433D)
