start writing music by mixing. seed to stage has a great video where he shows you can actually get more apparent volume out of a mix simply by correcting the composition, moving sounds away from the down/backbeat, etc... mix problems are often arrangement problems in fact. there shouldnt really be anything stopping you from getting each sound exactly as loud as necessary once its time to mix down for mastering. if anything, you'll find more often you need to tame things and make them quieter if you start working with the mixdown in mind, at which point you can simply grab the fader... you need to work in such a way that you are making the correct decisions from the ideation stage about what sounds to use, what is going to be loud enough, and what sounds simply need to have the way cleared for them in order to sound the loudest at any given moment in time.
if you're not mixing, you're not producing, but "song writing, which is a solved problem.

there are just a bunch of old songs that have built up where the core idea is good but i didn't know any of that shit at the time and i hadn't refined this process yet so... a lot of work.
actually it's really not that much it's just annoying to run through and identify what huge high/low cuts and random resonances and re-leveling need to be done.

no vocal in this clip? but i suspect if it is sounding flat and lifeless it's because your entire mix is severely lacking clarity in the upper range, due to being drowned out by reverb and gigantic sub. the entire thing sounds like disconnected noises as a result.
