Pandemonic Incantations is a great album. It's reminiscent of The Chasm (black/death hybrid), but kind of better in some ways.

If Adam's previous masterpiece, Ship of Theseus, was him at his most primordial, raw, and ill, then Birefringence is the colder, more calculating, and refined meditative madness.

One thing that has struck me on my Jute Gyte discography journey is the song titles, particularly the lyrics.

For a project that wears the black metal sheen in the guitars, the distortion, and especially the vocals, with particularly gothic/occult covers, these songs don't cover your fair share of haunted cathedrals, Abrahamic blasphemies, or general tirades through depressive episodes.

No, Jute Gyte isn't interested in retreading previous ground. In full possession of his faculties, there's no energies given to the supernatural, but rather, the earthly and mental existential terrors we face in our everyday lives.

A title like New Plastic's environmentalisms isn't exactly subtle, nor is Dissected Grace sickly Ayenbite of Inwyt, with lines like...

It's been a stick out characteristic that a band so encoded in black metal aesthetic manages to stand out in other ways besides the already notorious micro-tone adages.

Particularly The Foam That Flows From the Mouths of Wild Boars and The Unformed Volcanic Earth, it sounds like if Kid A was regurgitated by a generative AI moments after achieving consciousness while having a nervous breakdown.

These moments are decidedly calmer compared to the rest of the other black metal assault tracks, but they add a needed counterbalance to the barrage of micro-tone riffs; instead of limiting his explorations to the guitar, Adam instead delivers full on micro-tone soundscapes, filled with both active electronic and more passive ambient parts to play. I play a more fitting role here than on say, Perdurance, where it feels like a disco IDM breakdown pops in during the middle of some of the tracks. Now, I do love that album (especially the ecological tinge to many of the track titles (Ruins is a particular standout) but the electronic aspect isn't as implemented there as it is here.

This? It's the zenith of Adam's journey thus far. Now, I have heard his latest release, Unus Munus Patet, but after a couple relistens, this is it.

A truly special artist, and one that I'm glad I've finally cultivated some appreciation and deep understanding with.

When a sound improves as quickly as Jute Gyte's to such heights as this there is little to say but praise. Could this have been more of a Fas – Ite, maledicti, in ignem aeternum than two distinct halves somewhat loosely tied together? Yes. Should it have been such? No, not if Kalmbach made it this way; these albums are very clearly iterative and as such are less perfections unto themselves and more stones along the path. It's an amazing stone, at least, but it's not perfect. Nausea has been chiseled away from the stone in unrestrained aggression, and in this hard-touch little chips of imperfection were left to be ironed out next time.

As always the writing is stellar, and the riffs are absolute ear-worms. The production is, in fact, at its all-time best. Between the clean and sharp riffs, high-quality vocoder/synths, and amazing pained-sounding vocals whose performance is on an entirely different level, this is definitely the best-made Jute Gyte album. All of the pieces are better than before. The writing is also better, being much more aggressive and relying less on the microtonality to make you nauseous (because once you've transitioned to being somewhat comfortable in them they become much less interesting unto themselves) and more on their use in a cacophony of unyielding, unrestrained aggression. I definitely appreciate the less restrained approach taken here, I only wish there was enough restraint to maybe not have more ambience than maelstrom.

This is by no means perfect, but it is absolutely the cleanest Jute Gyte record to date.
