Aiming for 16gb of ram and at least a quad core CPU.
Are the t14 various models as repairable as the old stuff? Is there a particular generation I should avoid? Seems like they're reasonably priced.

What do anons think of a Thinkpad E15? I see one on ebay for $284.
I figure I could buy something like that, use it for a year, and then upgrade if there are any bothersome shortcomings.
My only concern is the1.6 ghz processor speed. With how retarded websites and browsers are these days I'd be worried it would get bogged down during basic browsing.

I've got T14 gen 2 (intel) from work and it's acceptable build quality wise, it's got one memory slot so you can get 40 or 48GB RAM total depending on the base configuration. Of course it's nowhere near the T420 keyboard feel wise, I also hate how sharp are the edges on the palm rest, but that's something you can't escape from on any laptop built after ~2013 it seems.

T480, you might want to replace the trackpad for an X1C one though.
>"muh T440p"
performance wise the 8250 gets on par with the 4700MQ -- and when it doesn't the power efficiency makes up for it, keyboard wise you can get the T25's keyboard + palm chassis and put it on the T480, and you can do a 4K screen upgrade (at the cost of battery life).
only get that piece of junk if you get it for free or under 50 bucks

if you want to bump up to 12th gen Intel, you can try getting the T14 (or L14) Gen 3; they're slowly being ditched out by corpos into surplus and ewaste facilities. for AMD, only worthwhile model imo is the T14 Gen 1, which you can get for cheap but do expect them to put up with cleaning them since they were usually given out during the pandemic for home office.

true but at the same time its kind of stupid when you can hwid-gen another license whenever you want, not to add that you shouldn't be using consumer windows in the first place
>In the future I plan to expand 16gb dual channel
guessing that right now you're just using single channel 8gb so it should cost you about 30 bucks for another 8gb stick to get dual channel, its not a lot but i'm sure you can save up for that in a week or two

that's Gen 1 then.

there's not a lot of differences between 8th through 10th gen (hell they use the same UHD 620 iGPU), so realistically you should probably look towards other models (like muh T480) to save a buck. not to add that E series are basically ewaste, at minimum you should be looking for L series as they have magnesium roll cages.

I second anon's advice to get a T480 instead. cheaper, just as good, and you can mod it to death with shit like (in no particular order) glass trackpad, dual heatpipe cooler, 2nd nvme in the wwan slot, better screen panels, larger battery, 64GB ram if you want (the E15 since it's newer is likely to have soldered RAM, the T480 has 2 usable slots), you can even libreboot it if you want
I'm typing this on mine right now
Anonymous 01/19/25(Sun)17:47:55 No.103960459
>>103960371
>these are the types of details
the thing with E series is that they're built as cheaply as possible (pure ABS, no roll cage or anything) since they're sold at small businesses; due to this they are pretty fragile and also scarce as they are held onto by businesses for as long as they can unlike X and T series who pretty much upgrade and sell off their stuff every 2 years.

L series are also in the small business boat, but are a stepup to the E series when it comes to build quality, so those that survive the recycle/buy cycle often come in decent shape. imo L series are superior to current T series because of the RAM slots, but they're a bit hard to get depending on where you live.

yeah from what I've done with mine they're really easy to do. imo the "hardest" one is the trackpad mod and it only needs you to open the case (6 screws), remove the internal battery, and then it's 2 screws to remove the old trackpad. the screen mod is just removing the screen bezel, unscrewing 4 screws, unplugging the display cable, and doing those steps in reverse with the new panel, you don't even need to open the laptop
I used to have a X230 before and the T480 is WAY easier to work with

if you've GOTTA buy a new one right now, i'd go for the T14 Gen 5 (specially the AMD model) as they're a return to form for the T series and now feature SODIMMs, RJ45 jack, easy-to-replace keyboard (with a new TrackPoint), etc. they're just beautiful machines and are worth it... however...
if you're willing to wait a bit, Gen 6 should come out Q3 with Lunar Lake and Strix Point chips, which would be a massive step up as SP brings insane power efficiency while LL brings a Battlemage iGPU. if lenovo continues the path they're currently going at with the T series, they're gonna be 10/10 nobrainer recommendation, but that's up for debate as LL switched on-package memory, they might get rid of the SODIMM slots (again) for the Intel model and they might do the same for AMD or atleast return to the single SODIMM slot.

aside from that, no idea, the P1 Gen 7 has LPCAMM2 slots and 4000 series Nvidia dGPUs but that's about all i know for other series; L-series remains to be my goat since they carry the old T-series design language and what not so might aswell check that too if you're on a budget or want muh thinkpad feelz

Nice. I corebooted it with skulls, but I'd like to experiment with other payloads such as Tianocore since skulls only has SeaBIOS by default. Do you mean enable SSH in the OS, or are there coreboot payloads that have an SSH daemon? My drive is encrypted so if in that scenario I'd probably have to plug in an external display.

I meant in the OS and you can type the password blind, that's what I had to do when I was messing around with libgfxinit on my T420 with 1440p panel, but at least the T420 has HDD activity light which helped me a bit. But you'll be fine unless you start doing some code patching yourself, which I don't think there's a need to on a stock T440p.

while true, you really gotta also paint the picture of how much money you're spending 220 dollars on a laptop that you're gonna have to spend money on:
- getting a new trackpad
- buying a new batteries
- buying new ram and storage
- replacing the screen if its one of those 768p panels
- getting a flasher if the thunderbolt port is cooked
- etc
its an investment that you gotta act smartly on, and yeah buying from goymazon is not a smart move

wow what an amazing opportunity. i would heavily scrutinize anons responses so you dont fuck this up. i dont have any recs because ive never even wanted to spend that much on a computer but obviously get something used so you can get better specs at a lower price, preferably in person so you can test things out however i understand this might not be an option, in that case just make sure you are really getting something functional. sorry i dont have any recs, but hopefully another anon does.

yeah thats what i figured, but be aware you are likely going to have to compromise on better specs for a lower price just for the _new_ factor. not a big deal considering this opportunity but it sounds like you're forced to into this path anyways so you might as well just not worry about it and still take as much advantage of it as you can.

I'm using a t440p right now. It's corebooted and the temp and fan speeds are relatively low. Not sure what kind of bloatware you're using but it works fine on my machine :^)

Does anyone know the name of this black thing inside of the trackpoint cap? Mine has worn away to nothing over the years, to the point where with everyday use, the clit keeps popping off half the time I lift my finger off of it. I've tried to ignore it for months, but today was the first time it fell off and I couldn't immediately find it, since I was late to noticing it had even fallen off. I tried using a replacement cap I had, but I could barely move the mouse, which was when I realized that the black plastic (?) inside the cap is absolutely necessary. I can't keep using my thinkpad like this. I only managed to find this photo if it by googling "lenovo thinkpad rubber inside of trackpoint" and finding this reddit thread about it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/jb1ngr/trackpoint_nub_structure_broke_off/

Replacing "rubber" with "plastic" shows more results, but seemingly no solution. The worst part is that the piece in question on my W530 is smaller than the one in my W510, so the W530 one cannot fit in my W510, but I assume the other way around would be a loose fit. Before anyone suggests replacing the W530 keyboard, that mod would be nice, but that doesn't actually solve seeming unavailability of this part. Do I have any chance at just replacing it? I could maybe try asking sellers selling caps if it will include the black plastic inside, but does it even have an official name to search for it directly?

i just realize i could glue it as a cope. I saw some comments in reddit threads suggest gluing it, but they also suggested that it was glued on on the first place, and that it wasn't meant to come off with the cap. I thought they were merely mistaken. I guess if no one replies with a way to replace it (or even find replacements of it for any given thinkpad, or at least the W530), I will just glue this low integrity one to the keyboard overnight and hope it stays.

You got a nmb keyboard, the nmb ones have the black under the trackpoint. You can try to glue it, also clean your keyboard.

I think I see what you mean about "nmb keyboard" being a keyword. Thank you! It might not be particularly useful, in the end, since the vocabulary might not be known to most, but it's better I know it than not.

I've tried cleaning around the mouse area since the trackpoint first started popping out, but it doesn't help. I did clean most if not all the keyboard keys as well since this started happening, but for two of my keyboard keys, the plastic things under the key cap came off with it. It was extremely hard to get back on to return the key to a state where it bounced back after pressing it, and I know I horribly bent the plastic for at least one such key in the process of having to retry it over and over. It was not worth it. I am now afraid to clean the keys, and didn't even take note of which two keys were the problem keys. To be fair, I had forgotten, but only just remembered that I'd only bothered since two keys couldn't consistently register a key press, so they were particularly dirty. I shouldn't need to clean the keyboard anymore for at least a while.
