Choosing a distribution is something you decide yourself based on your preferences, I could recommend Arch to you but maybe you won't like its rolling release model. The short answer would be to start with Mint, and depending on what you need you change to another one. Also, you can always try front-ends for watching slop, like Invidious or mpv for YT, or Safetwitch/mpv and chatterino for twitch.

Is an x220 still outdated? I loved the x series but it's not in the general anymore. I want to duel boot mac os and win 11. I had a x220 duel booted with current mac os 5 years ago but I don't know shit about macs. I might even just buy a msc book pro because there 250 bucks with a touch bar which seems nifty. Just something to browse and email and use as a guitar amp. I need a new thinkpad tho my x240 speakers stopped randomly. I never had a t series, how are they? I like the 12 inch of the x series that's why I always went with those. Also love the x220 keyboard. Need some suggestions. Want to try a t series but don't know what's most like the x220.

Those mini PCs are more than enough for fileservers, jellyfin and VMs.
Just make sure that if you do a lot of media transcoding get a 7th gen Intel or later, since they have hardware decoding for h265.

I have an x260 that has a bulging keyboard on the left side. It's literally scratching the screen and disrupting the keyboard backlight. I cracked it open (literally I broke a clip in the back) and there isn't any pillowing in the internal battery and it's not even really in the same place. It's closer to where the CPU and CPU cooler are located. Anyone know what this thing's problem is? Can't manage to take a picture that shows it properly. Otherwise it still works perfectly.

which of the 4:3 thinkpads should i get? i get they are incredibly outdated and even though they can be upgraded i really dont think i would need it, i rarely use over 4gbs of ram anyways and i think i would do fine with the 3gb models since usually i just have dwm and st running with at most 2 browser tabs open and im not a gamer or a guier or anything. if someone could happen to have the knowledge to compare every 4:3 so i know what im getting into or losing out on when i find a model id appreciate it. (i prefer the ones without the trackpads because i love the nipple btw.) right now im leaning towards an x60 or x61 depending on which i can find for a better price on fb marketplace and ebay and their trackpadlessness.

With a little trimming, you can fit x230 mobo in x220 chassis. The keyboard mod is very straight forward. You can flash coreboot with 1vyrain, you just need to revert to a supported BIOS version.

VP9 also with 7th Gen upwards, under the "Intel Quick Sync" Umbrella
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video
I use regular Debian on my Thinkcentre mini PC and use Docker containers for all of the services like Nextcloud and Jellyfin. It's got a 6th gen Intel but it's fine since I watch my h265 videos through the Jellyfin Media Player app which doesn't transcode anything and just plays the h265 video by itself. The "NAS" part of my server are just hard drives with SMB share and scheduled backups with rclone. A poor man's NAS if you will.
TrueNAS or doing a full Datacenter Cosplay with Proxmox is probably the better option if you wanna get serious but it werks for me so whatever.

The "NAS" part of my server are just hard drives with SMB share and scheduled backups with rclone. A poor man's NAS if you will.
TrueNAS or doing a full Datacenter Cosplay with Proxmox is probably the better option if you wanna get serious but it werks for me so whatever.

Thanks for replying
>I watch my h265 videos through the Jellyfin Media Player app which doesn't transcode anything and just plays the h265 video by itself
So it stream and the decoding is done on the phone?
>A poor man's NAS if you will
Well, better than my current setup, old busted X230 with linux mint.
Honestly, I just want NAS+download machine.
Full datacenter role-play isn't what I need.
Simply ssh into and running some command to download stuff is enough for me.
I'm eyeing some of these thinkcenter PCs, is there anything that run off 12V?
I have some UPS that output 12V on barrel, and 24 volts over PoE.
Could I use the UPS for those thinkcenter?
Thanks for replying

>So it stream and the decoding is done on the phone?
Yeah the decoding is done from the client device, a PC in my case. Jellyfin just streams the file so it has zero CPU utilization.
For a phone this might not work though. You'd be better off with transcoding if you primarily want to watch stuff on your phones and with slow internet connections etc
>Could I use the UPS for those thinkcenter?
At least my Thinkcentre m900 uses the rectangle-plug power cables with 20V output, the same ones the Thinpads were using at that time, so I'm not sure if you can use those with a UPS...

Most powerful 14' biz machine I can get for $200?
I want something for office work away from my desk and occasional music production at home, so I'll need at least 4c 8t. I've used Latitudes and Thinkpads, so I'm not brand loyal.

Thanks man.
I'm seeing some of these listing on facebook market place (not in US).
The thinkcenter are overpriced compared to dell/HP.
Maybe I'd go with those, any advice you offer when picking these up?

If I were to replace my laptop’s dvd drive with a caddy and move the hdd, will it boot from there or will I have to reinstall windows and all my programs?

It would boot.
I didn't bother with opening the HDD, and just slapped SSD in the dvd drive and installed the OS there.

Nice. I have a asus x555l and from what I researched, asus purposely designed the connector of the hdd to the motherboard like complete shit so you would think you’re hard drive/ssd is failing. I’ve never seen b,s like that before.

That sounds like it sucks, but whatever if the pay’s good. Is your boss the type that throws away the good shit for dumpster divers?
