Choosing a distribution is something you decide yourself based on your preferences, I could recommend Arch to you but maybe you won't like its rolling release model. The short answer would be to start with Mint, and depending on what you need you change to another one. Also, you can always try front-ends for watching slop, like Invidious or mpv for YT, or Safetwitch/mpv and chatterino for twitch.

Just make sure that if you do a lot of media transcoding get a 7th gen Intel or later, since they have hardware decoding for h265.

I cracked it open (literally I broke a clip in the back) and there isn't any pillowing in the internal battery and it's not even really in the same place. which of the 4:3 thinkpads should i get? i get they are incredibly outdated and even though they can be upgraded i really dont think i would need it, i rarely use over 4gbs of ram anyways and i think i would do fine with the 3gb models since usually i just have dwm and st running with at most 2 browser tabs open and im not a gamer or a guier or anything. if someone could happen to have the knowledge to compare every 4:3 so i know what im getting into or losing out on when i find a model id appreciate it. I use regular Debian on my Thinkcentre mini PC and use Docker containers for all of the services like Nextcloud and Jellyfin. It's got a 6th gen Intel but it's fine since I watch my h265 videos through the Jellyfin Media Player app which doesn't transcode anything and just plays the h265 video by itself. The "NAS" part of my server are just hard drives with SMB share and scheduled backups with rclone. A poor man's NAS if you will.
TrueNAS or doing a full Datacenter Cosplay with Proxmox is probably the better option if you wanna get serious but it werks for me so whatever.

Yeah the decoding is done from the client device, a PC in my case. Jellyfin just streams the file so it has zero CPU utilization.
For a phone this might not work though. You'd be better off with transcoding if you primarily want to watch stuff on your phones and with slow internet connections etc
