Currently Radeon is not competitive for many reasons, especially considering the high prices it's charging for its cards
Radeon is still in the Bulldozer phase, hasn't hit the Zen phase yet. RDNA4 might be Zen1. Ryzen wasn't worth buying until Zen2

Guess I'll change my upgrade plans. Think what I'm going to do:

- Replace 5700x with 9800x3d
- Replace 16GB DDR4 3200 with 32GB (pref. 64 if I can find it) DDR5 6000 CL28
- Replace 1TB NVME with 2TB
- Replacing aging 1TB secondary SSD with 4TB SSD

Then I buy a new GPU later.

I'm building a PC from scratch, so I don't really have anything in mind. Just looking for the most optimal/durable stuff, since I need it for work-related tasks. I do game, but I feel like high-end CPU for workloads will be decent to game with also. It will be paired with RTX 4080 Super, already bought the card.
Anonymous 01/12/25(Sun)14:02:48 No.103867933
>>103867881
It does basically nothing for productivity that the 9700X can't do. Stuff like video editing and Blender benefit from having more cores. If you do not care about gaming at all then don't wait for the 12 or 16 core X3D chips, just buy a 12 or 16 core non-X CPU instead. Also note that Zen 5 is only a little better than Zen 4 at most things, so don't pay too much more for a Ryzen 9000 series CPU than you would for a Ryzen 7000 series.

Consider replacing the motherboard with something like an Asrock Steel Legend or Gigabyte Aorus, that motherboard can handle a 7600X just fine but if you ever upgrade it to a better CPU then it won't have the power phases to support more demanding CPUs.

I do like to game, but I think that with RTX 4080 Super, the CPU would only make a few frames difference? At least from what I read. So, basically 80% productivity, 20% gaming relevance, I would say. I mainly play just games that are single player, such as Black Myth Wukong, etc.

From what I read of the 13th/14h gen having hardware issues, melting, some half-baked bios fixes that just make the CPU run worse... I am not all that inclined to buy an Intel CPU in all reality.

That's not how it works
3pin fans use voltage control circuity on the motherboard (or fan hub)
4pin fans always get 12V and a signal that tells the fan how fast it should go
If you use splitter to connect 4pin and 3pin fans to one motherboard header you can end up with these possible situations:
>PWM is on in bios, splitter is 4 pin: 4pin fan is controllable, 3pin fan is always at 100%
>PWM is on in bios, 3pin splitter: both fans are always at 100%
>PWM is off in bios, any splitters: both fans are controllable by voltage reduction (some people say it should not be used for pwm fans but nobody says why)

If your motherboard does not have voltage regulation mode and your fan is 3pin there are PWM to 3pin voltage adapters out there that do the same job as controllers in PWM fans.

im not saying that having one giant company is good for the market, since prices will inevitably be higher. but that doesnt matter as much as the fact that just not being poor would solve the issue. literally, just make more money, and you can have great hardware too. and once you have that great hardware, youll never look back again

Checked. Well all I can say is I hope if AMD wants to walk back into the landmine field they better have more cache or something else to deal with the lower efficiency as well as higher packaging costs next time.

>>103868846
If true, AMD really did put a lot more work/throw more shaders at RT for RDNA4 as it's easily beating the 7900 XTX with it turned on. My worry is that they neglected raster uplift as a consequence and we end up in a weird reverse-scenario where the the 9070 XT is faster than the 4070 Ti Super in RT but struggling to beat the vanilla 4070 Ti in raster given how it was always supposed to be between a 7900 GRE and 7900 XT.

That'd ironically place it basically neck-and-neck with the 5070 given it's going basically be a 4070S +10-20% according to Nvidia's slides for Far Cry that doesn't have MFG. If this is all true, and they launch it at or above $500 everyone will just buy the 5070 @$550 and it'll repeat the scenario of last gen. If they launch it belwo $500 such as for $489 like the price leaks suggest it'll be an alright release.

hHrTiyGIBM4 00-10-00 After QD-OLED TV is QD-Ultraviolet_ Better than MicroLED TV (1)
NEW SEMI-VAPORWARE DISPLAY TECH JUST DROPPED:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHrTiyGIBM4

Still self-emissive, no burn-in risk, and the prototype already runs @ 3000 nits and could hit 10,000. Essentially a double stack of ultraviolet-MicroLED emitters patterned in front of RGB quantum dot color converters and an added UV filter so it doesn't cook the viewer like a tanning bed on steroids. Since the LEDs are all the same color they don't have pick-and-place yield issues like the Unicorn that is conventional RGB MicroLED.

So that's QD-Ultraviolet, QDEL (straight up emissive quantum dots), and QNED (nanotubes) if Samsung ever decides to un-mothball it. I hope at least one of these techs will come to market, if not by LG/Samsung then TCL/Hisense/etc to get beyond OLED. I don't believe MicroLED is ever gonna make it.

When's the best time to hunt - right now asap after the announcement, or when the 5090s actually release, or a few months later? Or should I not hold my breath for any cheap offloading

Yes I NEED 24GB ram and I will get a 7900XTX (which go for around £800) but if a 4090 could be gotten for not too much more than that I'd probably splurge for the upgrade

>I'm still holding hope for this one, according to "experts" it would be able to use existing fabs, modified of course, and so would be able to ramp up quickly and cheaply for manufacturers.
Yeah, honestly same. The last news I heard at some investor meeting where they announced CAPEX plans and said they weren't going through with a QNED pilot-line because they didn't "need" it yet with how good QD-OLED was doing.
https://old.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/vgdcq9/samsung_display_postpones_qned_pilot_line/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW9QtDAsGLQ

The thing is, this year LG is getting rid of their MLA-tech and re-configuring their subpixel stack to narrow the color volume/gamut gap between WOLED & QD-OLED (also may get rid of tinting), and their WOLEDs use less layers in the stack to begin with so their panel tech is cheaper to produce and profit from so Samsung will face stiffer opposition in 2025. And this is before LG switches over to an RGB OLED structure next year which may radically change the landscape if Samsung is still using a triangle subpixel by that point. Then going into 2026-2027. you'll have the beginning Chinese onslaught of cheap Inkjet Printed RGB OLED from at least TCL/CSOT and cheaper, larger, higher-zone Chinese MiniLEDs with insane Nit-Output as well.

So the pressure is going to be on Samsung very shortly to do something beyond sandbagging with current QD-OLED. We might still see QNED if Samsung is feeling sufficient heat.

Get a 1TB SSD for OS and important games (that you play often AND that are big enough to benefit from the improved loading times). 1TB because it's usually the best value for a budget-conscious drive, smaller capacities are barely cheaper.
Then go to diskprices.com and pick out a (used) HDD within your price range for as many TB as you need. Right now it seems like you can get an 8TB drive with 5 years warranty for $80. If you want to be safe grab two, but if you wanna save money then just grab a single one and only put unimportant stuff on it - like big games that you can always redownload again if the drive croaks. Oh and use it to backup your files from the OS drive too, even if you mirror the entire 1TB drive you will have ample space to do anything you want.

Again, check with your motherboard. My motherboard has four M.2 slots, two chipsets, each of them connected to two of the M.2 slots. Because the CPU can only talk to one of the chipsets, the "secondary" chipset has to talk to the CPU through the first one, so the M.2 slots it controls are slower. Not a deal breaker, I just don't put anything that needs speed on those drives.

Likely you'll just have less than 30 fps if you don't lower some settings or use software cope like framegen or upscalers. Even if you don't meet minimum requirements you still can run the game but it'll be missing visual elements, run extremely laggy, crash and so on. Worst case scenario is that the game won't start at all.
I managed to run Hogwarts Legacy on my laptop with Intel i3 6006U integrated graphics. It was a shimmery unresponsive mess, iGPU wasn't able to display characted brows in the character creation menu and the game itself ran at 5-10 fps at lowest possible settings, but technically it did run.

I would be happy with 7900 XTX in raster and 7900 XTX + 20% in RT. It's not unreasonable, considering the boost that the PS5 Pro got in RT. I've waffled down to 7900 GRE performance a few times, but my gut feeling was always that the 9070 XT would match the 7900 XTX in raster

i enabled the adaptive sync option on the native monitor menu and then went to the nvidia control panel and i enabled gsync so things should be working right?
also if i remove the adaptive sync from monitor i see that the g-sync option also dissapears entirely for some reason
tldr:am i supposed to have both adaptive+gsync enabled or should i deactivate both and just leave my monitor options at 1080p/144 in the nvidia panel monitor options?

When using it, turn off v-sync in games. Turn ON v-sync for the game in the nvidia control panel. The set an fps cap in the game or nvidia control panel to a few FPS below your monitors max refresh. Enable nvidia Reflex or set the Low Latency mode to Ultra in the nvidia control panel for the game.

Says who? That's unfortunate if so, but other reconstruction algos get less support than DLSS, obviously because so much of the market is Geforce. (Really, Radeonfriends say they don't even want FSR. Just read your average /pcbg/.) It's understandable that devs choose not to spend the time, but it's easy, probably easier than ultrawide support, so all new games should come with DLSS, XeSS, and FSR.

Ironically AMD is the only vendor who backed out of Streamline, which would have ensured that FSR was in more games

>>103871162
Even FSR is better than either of those options. Yeah, FSR has major problems, but on balance against 30 FPS, FSR is the obvious choice. People turn all kinds of things down to hit reasonable frame rates

The FG is fine for my 144 Hz display. Maybe if I already had a 240 Hz display, or wasn't planning to upgrade my card when I get one, I'd be annoyed

>a legitimate hardware change
RTX 50 is adding a massive amount of TOPS, and as I understand things, that's where the new frames are calculated. The tensor cores are also a newer gen. Who knows if it's not just some segmentation bullshit. It'll be interesting to see whether anyone can mod DLSS MFG to work on the RTX 40 series (for the sake of science if nothing else)

>FSR adding an MFG-like feature
Yes I think FSR FG will soon become MFG (even Lossless can do it, can't it?), but I would imagine it'll be RDNA4 exclusive, much like FS4 will be, at least at launch (and even then only the RX 7000 series has any chance at getting FSR4)

It’s been a while since I’ve been knowledgeable on pc stuff, I’m looking to upgrade my CPU/Ram/Motherboard, I currently have an i7-7700k, and it has been extremely stable, but its really starting to show its age now and I think it's time it gets retired. I know AMD has pretty much caught up with Intel in terms of performance, but what is the difference, besides the price ofc.
I want the CPU to be pretty fast, but still not the most high end thing out there. I want it to be able to last me a long time, just as much as my 7700k did. Enough to play triple a games and do some video editing/motion work.
I would prefer it to be less than like 450-500ish dollars for all of this stuff if possible.

We know that it has the highest binned silicon and this promises somewhat higher clocks even in gaming when the other CCD is disabled. It will probably be faster than 9800X3D albeit not significantly. For people who can make use of 16 cores it will be the perfect CPU, for all others the premium won't be worth it.

>maybe not but constantly having to work around the small issues that arise when you use low-end or obsolete stuff to the point where you don't even think about the fact that you're doing it anymore isn't gonna make me happy either
you are talking like the newest tech does not come with early adopter issues, you are literally facing the same problems or even worse buying new highly overpriced stuff too
paying more does not actually just give you better in every regard
that is my problem
