dupes are almost always shit and way different than the real frags unless it's dupes of 70s/80s stuff that have been made worse through reformulation. milton lloyd makes some that are supposedly better than the real modern day versions but I wouldn't even bother with anything except of milton lloyd of that walmart "classic match" dupes of drakkar noir and stuff like that. dupes of anything remotely modern is going to be garbage.

Two thirds of the designerslop I try smells the same.
The same ambroxan 12-in-1 discount shower gel accord in men's frags with a bit of pepper here, vetiver there, maybe a touch of ever so slightly indolic white flowers if we're daring, the same vanilla-heavy sweet amber accord in women's frags with a hint of white and yellow flowers here, a pinch of mature aldehydes or classic rose there, even a hint of fruit in some cases.
Niche frags might be overpriced and bad smelling at times, but at least they have some character.

If they're replicas of real frags you should rather go to a sephora or some such store and try the originals out, then you can figure out what you generally like and then if you won't pay for the legit stuff you can try replicas of only the stuff you're interested in.
Contrarily to what >>18367083 posted there's plenty of good replicas, though it's always difficult to say for sure whether a specific replica is good with people on one side saying all replicas are shit and people on the other side saying "it's 95% the same" about everything, so you should definitely try the actual thing you're going to be buying a full bottle of, be it an original frag or a replica.

Your odor is fundamentally different from let’s say clothing. Nobody is offended (at least even remotely close to the same degree) by a ill-fitting suit than by bad smell. You also can’t escape someone in a meeting if they reek.

Any advice for a 24 year old guy who's never worn cologne? Looking for something I can wear to bars and possibly at work (laid back tech job). Don't need anything too classy, but am interested in trying lots of different scents, including female-oriented ones.

I tried picrel a few days ago and liked how it mixed with my scent, but I have nothing to compare it to. Going to a local Perfumania with a friend today, are their sample packs any good?

At times they're overpriced and bad smelling, but many times they're quite wearable on top of being a lot more interesting than the usual designerslop.
I don't like Aventus very much but that's wearable and it was pretty unusual before it became this popular and everyone and their aunt started wearing clones of it.
Reflection Man, Enclave, Ichnusa, Fat Electrician, Cocaine... all of that's perfectly wearable.

If you want a good all-around fragnance then Bois Imperiale by Essential Parfums. My advice is to find interesting scents and buy samples. And don't just smell a sample on paper and throw it away. Even if you like or dislike it on paper initially-you might change your mind later. And also smells might develop a lot over time. Something you think smell awful the first 10 minutes might become your favourite on the drawdown. Also if you sample and wear a whole day will give you an idea how long it lasts. Also it might last different on clothes than on skin and might smell different as well. Two fragnances that is advertised to females that I wear and like is Tom Ford's Black Orchid. And you should also try YSL Black Opium Illicit Green. I think they are both wearable.

Well yeah I'm not gonna buy a whole bottle without sampling first, but I just need a little advice on where to start. I'm very cost-sensitive so I'm planning on going through a lengthy process of smelling it on paper, then on myself, then buying a small sample to wear over a week or two. Glad to hear some dissenting opinions though.

>>18367542
Thanks, this is very helpful. Do fragrances last long enough on paper that I should be bringing blotters home with me? Also if I end up never liking the smell on paper, what are the chances I'll like it if applied to my skin?

If you don't like it at all on paper at any point then I don't think you would like it on skin. There are enough scents around so you don't need to spend time on that. But there are scents that I thought was "meh" and then later came back and fell in love with. So having samples and not just papers is not a bad idea. At least look up stores that sell decants and samples. Some stores also love giving out samples. They are great stores.

>It almost all just smells like cologne.
you're probably noticing a similarity in the fragrances that you smelled because they're all following a similar trend and trying to appeal to what's popular. but literally smell more. and then smell more. you learn to identify specific notes. you will find that you like the smell of some things, and you hate the smell of other things. you also get to a point where you have a rough idea of what something will smell like based on the structure/notes listed. scents are like colors. you might have just been smelling blue.

you learned something valuable from this.
1. buying bottles of something you haven't smelled is fucking stupid (unless you are very experienced)
2. you may not like heavily vetiver-forward fragrances (i don't like encre noire either, but i like plenty of fragrances that have vetiver in the base. tom ford grey vetiver is a smooth and soapy use of the note and feels a million miles away from encre noire.)
3. you may not be into classics from the 80s and earlier (i see oakmoss+carnation/geranium listed and i'm 90% sure i'm never wearing it. it can still be fun to explore these things to understand them though, and your taste might change if you decide to make a hobby of this. or you can just do cocaine instead, it's probably a cheaper way to have fun with your nose)

You gotta remember that perfums are mostly aerosolized denatured alcohol. The fumes coming off of that can irritate sensitive membranes and your lungs even without essential oils thrown in the mix. Try spraying them somewhere else on your body that doesn't rise directly up to your nose. Like the top of your forearms or down your back after putting on a shirt.
Or, you might have an allergy to some ingredient. There's thousands of oils used in perfumery; you're bound to be sensitive to at least one of them, and it's relatively common.

Chergui is weird for me. The very first time I tested it, it started out as this fantastic smoky sweet scent over a thin layer of leather, really just can’t do justice for how complex and unique it smelled. But every time I’ve gone back to test it after that initial trial, it’s still sweet, but instead of that smoky leather, I basically just get this slightly feminine powdery scent that I don’t hate, but don’t love anywhere near as much as the first try.

Gingembre is relatively short lived, 2-3 hours on my skin, but it’s in my experience a very unique fragrance as it perfectly encapsulates what it’s trying to mimic - candied ginger.

/frag/ always shits on sweet gourmands, but if there’s any they would enjoy, I imagine this would be it, as it’s not nonsense sweet scent, it’s just tasteful, reserved, ginger candies.

The problem with Gingembre is I have no idea when I’d use it, besides rare personal enjoyment around the house. Not a killer mind you, but it’s hard to rationalize a 100 ml bottle taking up space on -my- shelf for such a rare use, others may not mind it as much.

The person you’re quoting wasn’t me, and I disagree. Both Pineward and Rogue have some fantastic fragrances, but you’re not interested in discussing that, you just want to shit on things you don’t like, so you do you.

To anyone else in the thread, pick up samples of both. Rogue only has a few hits, but the ones that are, are great. Most of the rest are mid but interesting. Pineward has a much bigger selection and doesn’t have as many clear cut stand outs, but there are still a ton of great frags depending on your taste.

Your reading comprehension in inept. Never once used the word “badass,” and it isn’t even implied by chuckling at something. That’s the baseline of what you responded with, but it gets worse.

Regardless of the anthropomorphized animal in the art, the wide sweeping majority of the world would see the imagery depicted on T-Rex as masculine and the imagery on Rabbit as feminine.

Come back with some form of actual argument beyond name calling and inserting your own malformed interpretations of what I stated and I might be interested in discussing it. Continue with your inane insults and I’ll let you have the last word so you can feel good about yourself.

Kudos, glad you could enjoy them. Frankly I’m surprised it was all of them. He’s got a lot of heavy florals that I didn't hate but didn’t love.
L’Homme M. LaCroix is a weird dirty leather for me which I didn’t much care for. Rostracto is incredibly interesting, and immediately makes me think of a better done ELDO Jasmine et Cigarette, but I don’t think I could ever wear it. And then A’Oud Ancienne just didn’t do it for me.

What were your fave 3?

Thank you for corroborating the cartoonbrained manchild hypothesis. The fact that you wrote half a book in defense of your creepy geekiness makes it even more pathetic. I bet you're wearing an Adult Swim t-shirt right now.

I do too, but I think I love it because it smells very sweet to me. One of the OP stickies says it’s the scent of American pink bubblegum, which is exactly what it smells like to me.

You can go into any Hugo Boss store and smell them all. I wasn't impressed with your pic rel but ended up buying this.

Ended up trying a sample of Mousse Illuminee and I hated it. Nothing like Polo and it just smelled like grape soda. Where am I supposed to get pine and oakmoss?

I want some rogue samples, but the discovery set is rollerballs and Luckyscent is splash/dabbler vials. Does anyone have spray vials of these?

Not as far as I’m aware, the rollerballs are still better than giving money to Luckyscent for those shitty dabbers.

Any Imaginary Authors worth looking into? i know it's in the realm of meme frags, but i'd consider getting a novelty perfume for kicks.

They are definitely “novelty” fragrances as in literal kiddie shit, don’t expect serious perfumery

Buy the discovery set, I own it and haven’t really broken into it yet, but I own A Whiff of Waffle Cone and it’s a performance beast crowd pleaser, although a few of their other offerings have been fairly weak.

i was considering whiff of a waffle cone since i dont own any gourmand. the tennis frag would be funny because i play tennis. i think it'd be hilarious to have a tennis club scent, but i have also better perfumes for when id be at the club

There are two versions of The Soft Lawn, and I think it’s the original but I may be mistaken, one of them a lot of people associate with the smell of pickles because it has a dill note.
