It's a manual espresso setup with a non-standard basket (57mm iirc) and the legs are too close together for most scales to go underneath.
IMO the best ['cheap'] manual espresso setup is still the Flair 58 (electric so it heats up the portafilter for you and uses a 58mm portafilter)
The youtube title is clickbait; the only thing that a Robot can do is pressure control which you can do with any manual espresso machine and most expensive espresso machines will you let you go nuts with pre-infusion, etc.

Update for the bros!

My Philos is due next week! I'm super excited!
(I'm upgrading from an old Wilfa Svart/Aroma grinder.)

Also, I picked up some new gear:

Varia AKU Pro
Varia AURA Kettle
BWT Water Filter Jug
Timemore Coffee Server
Cafec Medium Roast Filters

I'm stoked! I feel like a kid at Christmas! Finally have some solid gear for this hobby—going strong for about 10 years now.

I’ve got three different coffees lined up to try once everything's in place:

Red Catuai from Costa Rica - Honey Process
Pink Bourbon from Colombia - Natural Process
Catucai 785 & 2SL from Brazil - Washed Process

Cheers to a great coffee year! *slurps*

Quick blog post, I forgot I did get another coffee in Auckland, from the warfside Cafe and bar. They used edible coffee cups that were much like a firm biscuit. Still no espresso on their menu but the macchiato this time was pretty good. Slight bitterness but very drinkable, pretty thick mouthfeel. The cup was a fun novelty 5/10.

Blog post #4. Barely had any time to find a coffee today as I was off to Hobbiton. There was however a coffee roasters called Robert Harris Coffee right next to the Hobbiton visitor info centre. Picked up a macchiato again though they finally did have espresso on the menu. I'll be honest the coffee was just fine, details on cup but it honestly just tasted very "Cafe safe" if that makes sense. Not bad at all just nothing special 6/10.
Oh and Hobbiton was 10/10.

been "stress testing" my hg1 by doing nothing but pour over for like almost 2 weeks now, because its clearly not built for filter so i want to see how well it can do filter.
and so far its been doing great.
maybe its placebo but i really think these burrs are going to taste better and better over time.
its kinda like v^^^v^v^v^(left finer right coarser, up = good down = less good) each day i have been going 1 whole number coarser from 1 full rotation from zero point.
i have been doing multiple pours but today i did 1 continuous pour until i hit my target yield, but then looking at the bed it looked like i could still get more coffee out of it so i filled another glass with ice cubes and did a second brew but this time doing multiple small pours and it was just enough to make 2 full cups of coffee, 1 normal filter and the other a iced coffee.
the first brew is perfectly extracted and much more vibrant than yesterday, super mellow and grounded, but also fruity and "sour" but in like a delicious apple way, y'know how even great apples can have that bit of sourness to them.
and then the iced coffee was much weaker(especially with the ice cubes melting) but the extractions was again perfect, great taste, just what you want from an iced coffee, sadly its a rainy overcast day with a cold breeze so not really the best time to be drinking an iced coffee.
i was able to make 2 brews because i came right out of the shower and started making coffee and didnt even measure the beans, just threw a bunch in and started grinding, turns out i probably almost doubled my normal dose which was why i was able to make 2 full cups of coffee.
excited to get back to moka and sort of "stress test" the grind settings of that too but i have been having a ton of fun.
thanks for reading my blog.
oh and the coffee is from Myanmar, just a normal coffee, nothing crazy.

My old keurig was shooting these out consistently when I threw it away. The grounds in all the cups are old, extraction is probably low, the hot water comes out of a needle so it might locally scald the grounds, there could have been scaling build up throughout the machine even after attempted cleaning.

going from a filter setting to a moka setting on the hg1 is a dream, (i was at a 1 full rotation from 0 +10 down to +3(whole numbers))
burundi natural process
HUGE dose. i saw some people fill the basket with beans to see how much to grind and i had never done that before so i thought i would try it out, turns out that is 35g with the E&B Lab 6 cup moka pot.
extremely rich. tastes like if you melted dark chocolate into a cup and then dropped in black licorice.
and im getting sort of a damp cardboard and soot profile on the high notes.
very thick and smooth in the mouth but then slightly "dry" about 15-20 seconds after finishing a sip.
that could be related to the dark chocolate flavor.

after enjoying my filter brews for the past 2 weeks this feels like my first real coffee of the year.
i enjoy filter alot but it cant touch this.

:)
hope you guys have some goffee this weekend
:)

i dont go to cafes.
but i would say the atmosphere/sound is the most important for going to and staying at a cafe.
as long as they make what you order and either bring it to you or notify you that it is ready for you to pick up i dont think service matters.

this has mostly gone away as the coffee has cooled

Why not? It's actually reducing waste. No paper cup, no plastic lid, no cardboard sleeve. It would be a missed opportunity to not mention that part of it. And you're going to appeal to another eco-concerned demographic too.
Besides, the eco-friendly part is the small print. They're leading with 'Edible Coffee Cups'. You're making a big deal out of the footnote.

With a small amount of coffee I figured it would be useful to help to be able to brew multiple cups and see what tastes best. A lot of people have been talking about it recently so i was curious and it is very cheap so i figured why not give it a try.

Do you guys that have a recommendation for a good portable coffee cup that is:

>leak proof
>approx 10oz capacity (current cup is 8oz but I feel I would like a bit more in it)
>Not too tall as I want to keep it in a certain gap
>Quickish access sip spout (preferably not screw top like the Stanley coffee cup)
>Ideally can fit the aeropress into it without the adapter funnel

I was eyeing pic related but I have a feeling it might be too tall. But the next size down is only 6oz

New Zealand blog post #5
Stopped in Wellington today to visit the other Weta workshop and LoTR locations. Found a little Cafe roastery called Raglan Roast Coffee, in a funny little out of the way place. Really strange set up but picked up an espresso and it was pretty damn tasty. Thick and creamy maybe a touch of plum/nuttiness. Definitely felt on the darker side of a roast though, so probably easy to fuck up if I didn't get a experienced barista.
Food was eh though. 7/10

generally the heavier processing means anaerobic beans will extract more easily, so you might try moving in the opposite direction, extraction-wise
a shorter ratio is a good place to start

I want to switch over to a hario v60
Is an actual hario v60 needed and do a better job. Or are those off brand ones on Amazon for a fraction of the price (for the porcelain/metal ones) just as good seeing they seem like the same shape
Anonymous 01/13/25(Mon)05:56:55 No.21102847
>>21102833
the shape is all that matters
as long as it its the right shape and fits the right shape/size filters then its a v60
but different materials mean different thermal properties
so if you dont want plastic then get glass
but glass heats up slower so you might have to do a preheat
and with ceramic you will have to do a preheat otherwise it will suck up too much heat from the water which will lower the average brew temp and affect the brew
so its all about trade offs really.

Oh ok. I was actually thinking of going for the stainless steel one or even the copper. Mostly for durability purposes and like I said, to avoid more heated plastic. Even though the black base doesnt touch the hot water directly, I should still be ok and not have it leak into my coffee would I? It's either silicone or plastic iirc

What do you think of those. And 1cup filters should still work fine with

You will not have an enjoyable time grinding espresso. Get an electric grinder at your earliest convenience, or at least a K6 + an electric driver/drill.

I did a couple of tries trying to dial it in and so far I'm blown away. Maybe I just have shit taste because I'm used to moka pot but man, it's amazing. Yeah, if I upgrade I'm probably going with the K6 but in terms of work put in it's not too bad and I could always just use the drill with the P2 right?
It's got identical burrs to the K6, just scaled down so it takes a bit longer.
Either way, I'm not even using that fresh specialty coffee; just some beans from my grandma that were sitting in a non airtight bag for quite a while.

Meant to write foamed.
Basically you heat it to desired temp in microwave.
Then pour it in and pump up and down a bunch and you get something resembling foam. Works alright, even made some basic latte art.
Nowhere near as good as proper foamed milk but better than nothing

New Zealand blog post #7 last day.
Well, after lots of misses and a few average brews I've finally got lucky. In the town of Dunedin is a fantastic little cafe/roastery. They have two places in town according to staff but the one I went to was connected straight to the roastery. They'll do anything you want but I ordered the barista's breakfast option.
One espresso, a flat white and a filter brew.
Delicious. Two different roasts a Kenyan and a Guatemalan. The first fruity and tasting of currents, the second toffee and chocolatey. They have a bunch of brewing gear and odds and ends for sale as well as a bunch of their roasts. Only cost $14 NZD for 250g as well. Also they let you take coffee hessian sacks with any purchase as well funnily enough.
Couldn't recommend enough if you're ever there, 10/10.

well clearly they dont.
the only land that is suited for it is super low altitude which almost universally makes bad coffee.
and if you find land that is the right altitude its protected national parks AND the wrong climate.
i dont see australian coffee growing as anything more than a hobby for some.

are you asking me a question?
now that you mention it, though, the only chinese beans ive tried were from yunnan. and while they are quite good, theyre "double fermented" (a non-standardized and thus largely uninformative term) and i dont really think i cant taste anything other than the processing, so i cant speak to the quality of the bean
anyway my belief is that theyre hard at work in CCP labs developing cultivars of coffee that can survive and even prosper in the temperate lowlands of china, and theyll probably share that information with australia because the two nations have pretty good relations, at least economically
but enough schizoposting

i just opened up a natural ethiopian gesha i bought in japan
very excited to brew it (:
used my kalita wave and melodrip, came out delightful but perhaps a bit underextracted, i think i ground just a bit too coarse considering the rapid drawdown and mild flavor
still its quite nice, havent had gori gesha in a while
as it cools a lovely minty sweetness is coming out (:
the roastery (picrel) is very nice, too, very cute and small and the guy made me a pour over to sample the coffee before i bought it (there was no menu for drinks)
shouldve bought more to be desu
