The trouble with the Bible, both new testament and old, is that once you filter out all of the rubbish what you're left with is a very thin soggy piece of paper. You can say that nearly all of it is mythology and the real meaning and value is hidden under many layers of symbolism, but at that point you may as well use any book. Every culture's mythology arguably has a lot of meaning and value hidden under layers of symbolism, and, if none was put there intentionally, as long as you look hard enough you'll find some anyway.
