The simple fact of the matter is that RTD is a better writer than Chibnall and didn't advertise his era by talking about what social changes he'd hope it would inspire. All of Rusty's companions with the exception of Rose post-Eccleston were fully rounded and genuinely great characters who happened to be women. Moffat didn't know how to write girls as anything other than sex mommies and sassy ninjas and Chibnall couldn't define a woman if asked directly, so of course the quality of "the message" degraded.

another side of the same coin. NuWho as a whole suffers from the same problems in different flavours. Chibnall simply didn't have the benefit of nostalgia goggles and unprecedented stupidly high stakes. at least he was much better than the others on his Doctor's characterisation, but sadly at this point everybody has forgotten than the Doctor is not supposed to be a spastic who bows down to his female companion because she has the deus ex machina power.

I've had multiple friends try to convince me to like Doctor Who, since I like Star Trek (pre discovery), Stargate and even LEXX but I just cannot watch WHO without cringing uncontrollably. Many shows try to promote an agenda and often do it in a subtle way but Doctor Who can't. It's all so contrived, obvious and pathetic.

There was a character who's personality type was "I'm gay!" and she said in in every fucking episode and that's barely an exaggeration.

I know a TV show cannot cause autism...But if it could Doctor Who would be one of the biggest culprits.

Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant's era is generally considered to be the best part of the show. I'm also a big fan of Star Trek/Stargate and early Doctor Who is one of my favourite series.

Unfortunately the writing has taken a nosedive in recent years, but the early episodes are a much better representation of the show.

I've been a Who fan since the 80's. One of my earliest memories is when he fell and regenerated. I was blown away, I had never seen anything like it.

I've followed him through every series, movie and the new Who.

Now, I just cannot watch it. The Whittaker Who was the worst I've ever seen, simply terrible writing, pushing agendas and completely misunderstanding the character. It was like she knew nothing about him, but maybe watched one episode. Then just ran around acting like a fool, trying to do some kind of knock off pathetic version without knowing what she was talking about. I gave up after a few episodes. It hurt to watch.

Then the recent tennat return episodes being written like they were for a 5 year old and also for trans audiences. Why would you write specifically to only make 0.01% of the population happy. It was just terrible. They seem to just want to try to prove they are hip, cool and up to date, so they push trans and gay themes then pat themselves on the back. Telling the Dr he isn't smart because hes only a man and women are better. Telling him off for pronoun usage. It was so cringe inducing.

Dr Who was never about sexuality, the doctor never had and sexual relationships. It was never a theme. He's hundreds of years old, he has little to no interest in dating what he must think of as his children by now.

Theres just no need for sexual themes in Who.

It was all about discovery, the wonder of the universe and life. Fighting crazy aliens who want to kill people with a smile, a laugh and some cool tech.

Now, despite all the backlash they still won't listen and are going ahead with a gay doctor who pushes his sexuality on people. They have killed off their most popular character.

Old Doctor Who? I found it to be cheesy but inoffensive and when I was young, one of my uncles I was staying with let me watch some Dalek episodes from the 70's-80's and I remember liking them (apparently I used to draw them a lot). New Doctor Who though is just unwatchable for me. You can really tell it's a modern BBC show from a mile off and all for the worst reasons. Like the anon in the post above, I never got a sense of wonder and mystery a time travel science fiction show should have. Every episode, every storyline just stinks of the BBC and their "values". Yes, science fiction can reflect modern day issues by projecting them on alien races/worlds but you need writers and producers to be very skilled and motivated to do that without it becoming preachy and forced and the Who writers clearly can't (or won't).

Deep Space Nine got a little too preachy in some episodes for my taste but only in a few episodes and it's still my favorite SciFi show of all time.

What many people, including the shows writers and producers, seem to be incapable of grasping is that the main complaint the audience now has with the show is that while the show definitely had a vaguely gay/camp element to it at times throughout its history, the audience was largely always happy to accept it because the show was never overtly preachy and it instead generally focused on telling actually good, fun, and engaging sci-fi stories with well written and mostly well-rounded characters, rather than making the political ideologies of the day the main/only focus of the show and its characters.

And then along came #13 and now #15... and so now the show has about done a complete 180 where it's now almost entirely focused on 'The Message' while any attempts at good old-fashioned fun and interesting sci-fi storytelling have all but gone out of the fucking window.

But the show's cast and crew apparently simply can't/couldn't understand this perfectly valid complaint and so they instead chose to directly or indirectly accuse their audience of various -ism's and phobias - e.g. racism, sexism, homophobia, etc., and then having insulted the intelligence of most of their audience they then had the nerve to complain that most of the audience had walked away.

So damn right we walked, fuck them - go woke, go broke.
