There are small things everywhere to do. The best part of every FF is when the whole world is accessable to you and you're going from place to place getting stuff done. The story barely has a semblance of what it wants to be, most of it is "Shinra bad, Sephiroth bad, stop both". To say disc 2 is "3" or, only has backtracking as you said, simply only because you're revisiting locations you've already been to or seeing the story arcs of characters truly unfold, is incorrect. Icicle Inn, Great Glacier, Northern Crater, Underwater Reactor + Submarine, Mideel, the optional Ancient Forest, optional Chocobo Breeding, and other things I'm sure I'm forgetting all literally do not exist on disc 1. there is a bunch of mandatory mini game like things you have to do, particularly at the gold saucer - its really shit. The card game isn't too bad, there's a whole quest line associated with it. Finding the summons and fighting them are kinda fun also. But the mechanics of the game are much better than remake, the boss fights are better. Dynamic difficulty provides a better challenge. And also, the final 15 percent of the game is alot better than the rest of the game, particularly the boss fights.
