What was your initial reaction to the climax of The Painful?
For me, I still vividly remember how empty it felt and probably have returned to the ending more than a healthy amount.

Brad had a fairly uncomplicatedly good goal but he did a lot of pretty fucked up stuff in the process of accomplishing it and in the end it was that kind of fucked shit (like doing Joy or killing his piece of shit dad) that drove Buddy away from him, not his actually straight up monstrous shit like his rampage in the construction zone and the ways you can threaten people into being your allies.

Probably not actually telling Buddy as much as he could. Some of it is understandable, like her not knowing how fucking evil Marty was, but other stuff is just shitty on his part like not telling her what Joy is and why she shouldn't do it. the Dale thing was in the Joyful, which Austin made himself, so it is a part of the canon. A lot of people might not know what i'm talking about, so i'll explain it here:

In the Joyful, after Rando passes out due to his wounds, there's some sort of weird peace group that takes Buddy and Rando and puts them in separate buildings, holding both of them there until they get better. As Rando asks where Buddy is, the group informs him that a member (never shown on screen, only mentioned by name) named "Dale" was implied to have at least attempted something with Buddy while she was captive. Rando tries to find Buddy before passing out, waking up to find her having killed the rest of the group.

This is a very specific and odd scene to leave in the game, as if it wasn't a necessary scene to leave in to give context as to who's the father of Buddy's child during the end credits, Rando could have just woken up to Buddy taking care of him elsewhere in some cave. There's literally an entire segment where you scooch as a wounded Rando for a couple of seconds, the only time you're ever given control of a character that isn't the main one of the game. (Lisa for the First, Brad for the Painful and Buddy for Joyful)

I would say that the Marty boss fight is kino if it wasn't for the fact that the fight is essentially just a way to get rid of your immense party member collection unless you have Nern to inflict pissed, which is the only way to really properly beat the fight. All the monolouge after the fight is pretentious cringe. The visuals are cool, though.

Sorry, assumed you were the other guy. Rando's main issue is how unassertive he is, which is why he has as many issues with Buddy as he does. He only puts his foot down in the Joyful not by stopping Buddy or throwing her in a prison himself, but by having others do it and then leaving in the middle of her sleep instead of stopping her killing spree. You could also argue that the dream Buddy has in Definitive alludes to this more with the interaction child Buzzo and child Rando have. Buzzo outright says to Rando that he doesn't have the fighting mentality.
