Unsurprisingly, most of it is Japanese games with "fanservice" elements that have been a punching bag for the industry since 2018, which is infuriating on its own, but there's even some western-made games with horror or violent elements suggesting Nintendo is literally regressing to the 90s. I don't know why they seem so intent on pigeonholing THEMSELVES as the kiddy console when it was the bane of their existence throughout most of the 2000s.

Compile Heart were one of the devs who could have benefited the most from it since their games tend to run poorly on the Switch's PS3-level hardware, but they're getting fucked hard by these "guidelines" and whether or not they will even support the Switch 2 is up in the air now. The rating boards like ESRB, PEGI, CERO, etc. were literally created in part to head off shit like this, and Nintendo themselves even agreed. They were also touted as an alternative to government regulation. Now that everyone is basically just ignoring them now, I think government regulation should be put back on the table. Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and Steam are all very important access points for developers to the market and should be acknowledged as such. They should be regulated as pseudo-utilities and restrictions ought to be placed on what they can deny from sale.

The developers want their games in the west. Up until recently, they had no issues selling them. In fact, Gal*Gun Double Peace had most of its sales in the west. There is an audience for these games here, but now the developers are flat out being prevented from reaching them. Learning Japanese is not the solution as long as platform holders have the power to censor or outright block titles from the market with arbitrary content restrictions. For the record, games are getting censored in Japan/Asia too (Tokyo Clanpool, Prison Princess Trapped Allure, Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs The Thrilling Steamy Maze Kiwami).
