Who was in the wrong here?

Both of them.
Colm was selfish to ignore how much the friendship meant to Padric and Padric was ignorant to not realise that Colm needed some time apart. Had they both been able to reach a compromise, such as spending less time with each other so Colm could have time to spend on his music then nobody would've gotten hurt.
Ironic thing is if Padric had just accepted it and left Colm to work on his music in a few months he probably wouldn't have achieved anything and would have to begrudgingly accept that he was the reason that he never achieved anything great and he'd probably ashamedly apologise to Padric and they'd go back to somewhat like they were before.

There was a time when I was really close to pullling a Colm on my best friend (i.e. cutting him off because he's kind of an annoying prick sometimes), but instead I chose to isolate myself for a few months, just being on my own or hanging out with different people, making up plausible excuses to avoid hanging out with my friend.
But the problem is that when you live in a small island where you meet the same people and you can't really avoid your ex-friend, it's understandable to get really fucking annoyed until you snap. So, I kind of understand where Colm is coming from.

Why can't this upper class children's theater make a movie about friendship without wacky characters?

padraic is retarded but colm's grievances are totally self inflicted both literally and figuratively
neither of them will leave inisherin but neither of them truly have a good reason to stay and this culminates in padraic burning down colm's house
the final scene has the characters talk about their situation and future, couched in reference to the mainland conflict and despite his statement that some things simply cannot be looked past padraic offers to care for colm's dog anytime
regardless of the sincerity of this it demonstrates that neither colm nor padraic have any intention to leave the island and that they are still bound together
because they are lovers
