Breaks your heart as a kid.
As an adult you sympathize with the horse.

It literally was a different time, the stuff they put into kid's movies back then was incredibly dark sometimes. Life's not a fairy tale though so it's still superior to the kind of slop late zoomers and aoomers are being served up

Part of me wonders how much of it was to intentionally traumatize kids though. There was a kid from my school who had to go to counseling because of the two-headed guy from Harry Potter with the turban.

I'm reading "Blood Meridian" chapters to my nieces as a bedtime story because kids need to learn about what it's really like out there.

the people making those classics knew that it's unhealthy for children to never be afraid and included those scenes to give them a safe, controlled environment to feel fear in

kids back then weren't overprotected faggots who could be traumatized by things that don't matter
In the 80s a 5yo could watch Robocop, maybe had a nightmare and that wa all. No if you show Robocop at a 15 yo he goes to therapy for 10 years then become trans then he hang himself

I'm pretty sure some of it was just being a dick for fun too. I cite Roald Dahl as my evidence for this.

To be fair, everything now is politically correct young adult fiction. It doesn't matter if it's cartoons, "adult" movies or Oscar bait, it's all some variation of YA.
In that sense, it does reflect contemporary society, where most adults under 45 are perpetual children.
