I'll just watch whatever piques my interest. Yesterday I watched a cuban film, and I don't feel like overlooking entire countries because of some selection bias. The reality though, is that I will probably watch mainly mexican, brazilian and cuban films because those countries produce the most kino on LATAM.

ChronologicalTsai here with some mini thoughts on the Walker series that came up next. First up-
Walking on Water (2013)-
I did not watch the feature film that this was a segment of, I only watched this segment. Great blocking throughout this short. Tsai starts to move away from focusing on Lee and instead we just spend moments inside the flats watching the residents there.
It's starting to become apparent that the Walker series is a documentary of the time and place they're set in, with Lee's performance art occurring simultaneously as an easy framing device. I liked this short.

Journey to the West (2014)-
Named after the famous Chinese novel, which I admittedly haven't read and have only done minimal research. Is this the character Lee is playing?
We begin on a very striking closeup, not of Lee but Denis Lavant (who is one of my favorite actors). In Tsai's framing, Denis becomes a huge mountainous figure, literally, with Lee serving first as a background character to Denis, but later leading the way for Denis to study and follow.
This is a film of juxtapositions- quiet and loud, light and dark. The stairway shot is a standout moment. By watching both Lee's character and how the public reacts to his movements in this extended shot, we receive many thought-provoking moments inside this single beautifully composed scene. The girl's impatient annoyance, the hurried path of the public alongside him, the light reflecting his red robes into the dark stairway.
Tsai plays with exposure in this film, not being afraid of shots being overexposed in areas and scenes, in order to then juxtapose them with darker areas. In a shot near the end, we watch Lee walk across the shot and exit the frame. Denis follows him, matching his every movement, and we realize we are also still “watching" Lee even though he is not onscreen, now visually and physically interpreted through Denis.
Perhaps this series could also be named “Watcher”. I am still greatly enjoying this series, where I had previously anticipated losing interest quickly. Tsai continues to surprise.

No No Sleep (2015)-
Each of these entries seems to begin with a very striking opening shot, a great trope. The blown out exposure, oversaturated colors, lo-fi digital look is very different from Tsai so far; I wondered if all of this was due to a low quality file I was watching. But after this curious opening shot, Tsai returns to the usual high quality visual style.
I noticed the robes are different now, they seem thicker and more textured, perhaps due to the colder environment he is in. How did he get to Japan? It is interesting watching how the different locals and cultures in each film react/interact/watch him. The quiet, late-nite Japanese culture reacts accordingly.
There is a shot looking out the window from inside a subway car that is one of the highlights of Tsai's career.
Words cannot do this shot justice (on the surface this is such a "simple" shot) and it alone is worth watching this short film for. I immediately watched this film a second time specifically for this shot.
Next we suddenly begin following another character- a Japanese man inside of a bath house. We soon also find Lee, now without his robes (and not walking either) enjoying the warm bath. I wonder- is this supposed to be the same "Walker" character or is this a new character? Tsai has played with cinematic ideas like this in the past. I am still considering this.
These films are really taking on a very "comfy" mood, especially this one. It was very relaxing to watch, listen, and experience. I wish I could have slid into the warm bath next to Lee at the end. Another very enjoyable watch.
I remember some Anons here speaking very highly of No No Sleep in the past. What about this film did you like?
Is there anything I potentially haven't picked up on with this film? Would love to hear your thoughts.
To the thread in general- have you seen these films? What did you like and/or dislike about them?
Coming up- an afternoon delight, some shorts I probably wont be able to find, and a long walk.

While this is fair (don’t know if I agree with 80% but I get your point), it’s honestly an aim of mine to not focus on merely describing a subjective personal response to a film. That to me isn’t worth very much. I enjoy reading what a film is about, what happens in the film, some technical aspects of the film, and then perhaps some interpretive analysis or reaction, and I feel like that’s generally how they’ve come out so far. I can try to add more personal thoughts moving forward, but in the moments where I am “just recounting what happens” it is also a way of saying “this is what I liked” which I thought was also apparent.
There’s alot in these films I leave out (believe it or not) and I’m absolutely not purposely trying to be long-winded. I was surprised myself when I had to break one of my posts up into 3-4 separate posts, but these are based on notes I take immediately after the film and later fleshed out just before posting here.
These threads have a bit too much “soul of wit” 99.9% of the time.

>La vendedora de rosas
>9/10
Amongst the coldest and most disturbing films ever made, Colombia's La vendedora de rosas presents the viewer with the harsh realities of hood life in LATAM, with this film centering on street urchins and their survival through violence and addiction.
The film's completely fucked, make no mistake about it: it makes something like Pixote seem restrained in comparison; here you see pedos, junkies, drug dealers and thieves killing each other on streets where life has no meaning and no value. You see this film and you get shocked, either because you've never known of something like this, or because you've lived through it.
The score's kinda amateur, as is some of the camerawork, but what Gaviria's flicks lack in technique they more than make up for in passion and gravitas. Rodrigo D., -his previous film-, is also a Latin American classic of the highest caliber, and also a very disturbing film. If you're seeking the scuzziest, most shocking, most coldest film ever made, this one is a good contender for the top place. Highly recommended, but only for the brave and the strong.

Watched it years ago on VHS, it's probably going to be on my top 5, though La vendedora de rosas might be even better, ngl
