Do you relate to the ugly fake-looking puppets or something? Like "Wow my acne-covered ugly self totally can relate to that weird-looking creature. Why did George have to change it? It's an attack on me personally!"
I don't understand why you fuckin' nerds care. These are stupid sci-fi movies. Fast food films. Not art.

The conspiracy theory is that he did it to cut his ex-wife out of earning a cut from doing editing work by doing so many changes that it counts as a new cut. But that doesn't really explain why he kept making changes way after the Special Edition to include shit like >>208084179. The most likely answer is he's just a perfectionist, but he works best with other people to bounce ideas off of and convince him not to do stupid shit, so he just kept fucking up the OT with the Special Editions and their updates.

It goes back to his car racing days. He's always been about "faster, more intense" and he likes to revisit highs that he got in the past by racing cars to this very day. The same principle is at work with his films, and he has changed ALL of his films as of two years ago. He gets a kick out of doing what he does, it's that simple. Just ignore his promises that change 159A on Reel 8 is totally final this time guise.

Sadly Lucas became severely retarded in his later years due to a degenerative brain condition. This impaired cognitive function led to such horrible mistakes as the 1997 Special Editions and the Prequel Trilogy.

George Lucas lied about everything when it comes to Star Wars. The claim is that the actor in this scene was a placeholder for a monster they would include in his place. This is false. This fat guy was always intended to be Jabba, then they cut the scene. Later they decided to make Jabba into a slug monster. This is confirmed by Gary Kurtz. George says that he went back and “completed” his movies as they were originally intended but everyone knows this is bullshit, he’s altering them according to his autism

No, he did plan him as a furry creature overlaid onto the actor...*at some point*, but yes, once filming was underway the dialogue makes it obvious that Lucas gave up on his high-minded Jabba concept before trashing the scene altogether.
>George Lucas lied about everything when it comes to Star Wars.
I would not say, nor can it be proven that he has "lied" "about everything when it comes to Star Wars, but I can make a strong case that he has forgotten details and has sometimes preferred once narrative over the other.

A puppet will always look better than CGI because it physically exists and can interact with the other actors. CGI does not exist and cannot be interacted with, it's a total fabrication added in post.
Also the Jim Henson Company was simply better at creating creatures than any CG studio in existence.

Why are Star Warsfags so autistic about the 1977 theatrical version? He probably made tons of retarded changes during editing and even during scriptwriting that nobody ever saw which made the first theatrical cut worse than what he originally had on paper.

On a film screen with real silver particles in it when lit by the projectionist in a theater in 1997, it looked better because it wasn't lit up as intensely with some other factors that video leaves behind.
By the way, and NO ONE talks about this here, but older films like the original SW trilogy and of that era had their sketchy matte paintings and other shortcomings hidden by theatrical specifications. It looked better and more believable on the silver screen. This is why there's a "movie mode" on modern TV and PC monitor settings.

I am put in mind of an anecdote about the French Impressionist painter Pierre Bonnard, who in his later years was arrested in the Louvre with a little palette and brush, retouching one of his paintings. The security guards grabbed him, and he was shouting, "But I am Bonnard! It's my painting!" And they just kept saying, "The painting is in the Louvre. It's finished!"

Those are both false. He was definitely in charge of editing and even fired one of the editors who wouldn't do what he wanted. Later for TESB he held Kersher's hand during its shoot, then for RotJ he outright directed several scene and held the hand of that director as well. The guy Lucas is directing in Return of the Jedi in my pic related is the "director."

He never considered Star Wars to be finished when it released. It was just a compromise due to the limited technology of the time. Even the Special Editions weren't completely what he wanted. I think George just had a problem of being impatient. That's partly why he pushed and invested to develop digital editing tools because he hated how slow the process of film editing was. If he had waited until a few years ago to release the Special Editions, I think he would finally have the movie he always saw in his head.

Btw, I like the film, but I won't lie and say it wasn't a bit dry in spots.

I'm glad George struck while the iron was hot because if he waited to make Star Wars for even one year, we'd not be discussing this. Yes, it's been centered on his impatience, but I see where he's coming from. He's very ahead of his time.

I think fixing actual errors is fine. Like when you remaster an album and correct an unintended flaw such as phase problems. Or, more relevant to the thread, iirc Luke's lightsaber was the wrong color purely by accident.
What I don't buy is these retroactive revisions under the guise of "I always meant to have this, but we couldn't achieve it at the time". Art is vision within constraints, constraints which include not only time and budget but also your abilities and sensibilities while creating. A completed work becomes a snapshot of the vision at that moment in time. So I find it dishonest to claim the revision is the "TRUE vision". At the very least, let the two versions coexist.

Even if his ideas hadn't been stolen in that scenario, his style would have been utilized in tons of uninspired works. You'd have one shitty film "with that really cool part" that would essentially be the Star Destroyer chasing the Rebel ship, except with different objects, then another with "that part that looked like glowing swords." Funny fact: the producers of Starcrash insist that Lucas stole from THEM.

I think the Special Edition scenes have to he understood within the context of Lucas trying to get asses in seats again for movies that, at this point, the average person had probably seen 12 times and the fan had seen several dozens. Sure the Jabba scene is nonsensical and redundant, but it's new. New Star Wars in 1997. That doesn't justify it, of course. The Special Editions are still terrible and reflect tasteless preoccupations that would infect the prequels.

That article doesn't mention that the IMAX release of Attack of the Clones had to be edited down so it would fit on a single IMAX reel and the scenes they chose to leave out were the romance scenes.
So, on an official theatrical release, they showed that they were fully aware that the romance story was total bullshit.

Yeah but only the EARLY drafts of Star Wars resemble Hidden Fortress (as in the rough draft, first draft and the 14 page treatment he used to pitch the movie to studios.) By the time you get up to the 2nd draft (and the final shooting script for Star Wars is the 4th draft) there's barely any Hidden Fortress left in the mix.

Isn't that mostly just in Attack of the Clones though? And from what I've read a lot of that is due to Lucas finally getting writer's block and not being happy with the script so was constantly rewriting it on the go. To be fair he did this a bit on EVERY SINGLE other Star Wars movie too including the originals but on Attack of the Clones it was kinda egregious, and that's why a lot of scenes feel a bit unmotivated

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSj3MOh8OzM
Fun fact: you can't just stop paying people residuals (or royalties for that matter) by slightly re-editing a film decades after the fact. Surely if that were true Hollywood would re-edit every single movie to get out of paying people a few bucks. Another fun fact? Film editors aren't entitled to residuals anyway meaning whoever came up with this dumb rumor is an actual retard who has no idea how films are made.

I don't understand people's issue with this. Yes, it's slow and clunky, they obviously didn't have great tech for the lightsabers at the time (I'm pretty sure they had these thick power cables that had to run down their sleeves and be plugged in off-camera which would have been awkward to swing around). But even if you take all that, Guinness isn't playing some swashbuckling swordsmaster of legend showing off his masterful skill. He's an old, broken, retired knight who hasn't held a sword in decades. The fact that later in the movies they decided to make these 80-year-old men doing flying flips and choreo is a whole different set of nonsense.

No they didn't. The Force was always the Force. It's just that in the 2nd draft (which properly introduced the Force) the light side was called "the Ashla" and the dark side was called "the Bogan," that's all. This had simplified down to just the light side/dark side by the time Lucas got up to writing the 4th draft (which is the shooting script.)
So no, Dave Prowse never said "the Bogan" on set, this is easily verifiable. You're just lying.

Most of the glow effect was added in post. The real problem was that Vader's helmet heavily restricted visibility so the actor was forced to basically act blind. Can't have fancy fight scenes when that's the case.

No, I’m not wrong. He said that he knew the plotlines for all the movies, sequels and prequels included. He said he knew about Luke and Leia being twins and Vader being the father from the start. This is false. It’s something he made up to build hype for the prequels. He knew that they would focus on Anakin but he had no clue what the actual story would be outside Revenge of the Sith’s 3rd act. He made up Phantom Menace on a whim but acted like he knew for decades what it would be like

He knew that they would focus on Anakin but he had no clue what the actual story would be outside Revenge of the Sith’s 3rd act. He made up Phantom Menace on a whim but acted like he knew for decades what it would be like

Imagine constructing the most intricate brownie sundae with sprinkles, nuts, whipped cream and a candied cherry on top, but you drop it on the ground. Right next to a pile a dogshit. It wasn't *in the dogshit* And you can't make another one.

>Is it true that they legally can't?
That is untrue. George Lucas has de facto control over SW to this day. Sources: Kathleen Kennedy and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently was granted or allowed to show a non-special edition 70mm copy.

>It's George's baby...we won't be touching them. -Kathleen Kennedy post sale
So there you have it, Disney is respecting Lucas by allowing him to control when and how the originals are shown and sold. I think we will see an official release at some point because afterall he did promise never to release them after 1995, yet did release them once again in 2006. And then again in 2008, so there is hope.

if I worked fot a crime boss and had to babysit him while he personally visits one of his smugglers and begs him to repay a debt and returns empty handed I'd start thinking of changing my employer

IIRC the only original version that has never been released in any format is the 1977 cut of Star Wars since the 1981 version adds the A New Hope subtitle

His attitude has also changed over the years. Han shooting first is something that makes perfect sense and is arguably essential to Han's character, but George became more sentimental as he got older and didn't like the idea of kids idolizing someone so cold hearted. So he had Greedo shoot first, then later cut it to be more like the two of them fire simultaneously. It's all just to soften Han, something that's completely unnecessary and arguably undercuts his character.

Despite not liking the rework of this scene, I'll admit I don't actually hate the idea that Greedo is getting ready to shoot Han, rather than obliviously gloating the whole time.

Hidden Fortress was a huge influence on Star Wars (bickering comedy peasants, spunky rebel princess, wise veteran samurai has to fight his former ally), but it's not as directly lifted as people tend to claim.

RotJ, the one released first on home video in 1986, is not the original version as well.

Star Wars is also The Wizard of Oz in many respects. And The Dam Busters in very direct ways. And then Merlin thrown in. It's always been a pastiche, but it's the best one.

Lucas has a brain fart concerning Greedo; Greedo's dialogue confirms he was about to murder Han in cold blood, not the other way around. Sure Han was being sneaky, but it was still purely self defense. No court on Earth would convict him with the film in hand.
