By the way, and NO ONE talks about this here, but older films like the original SW trilogy and of that era had their sketchy matte paintings and other shortcomings hidden by theatrical specifications. It looked better and more believable on the silver screen. This is why there's a "movie mode" on modern TV and PC monitor settings.

What I don't buy is these retroactive revisions under the guise of "I always meant to have this, but we couldn't achieve it at the time". Art is vision within constraints, constraints which include not only time and budget but also your abilities and sensibilities while creating. A completed work becomes a snapshot of the vision at that moment in time. So I find it dishonest to claim the revision is the "TRUE vision". At the very least, let the two versions coexist.

And from what I've read a lot of that is due to Lucas finally getting writer's block and not being happy with the script so was constantly rewriting it on the go. Yes, it's slow and clunky, they obviously didn't have great tech for the lightsabers at the time (I'm pretty sure they had these thick power cables that had to run down their sleeves and be plugged in off-camera which would have been awkward to swing around). But even if you take all that, Guinness isn't playing some swashbuckling swordsmaster of legend showing off his masterful skill. He's an old, broken, retired knight who hasn't held a sword in decades. Most of the glow effect was added in post. The real problem was that Vader's helmet heavily restricted visibility so the actor was forced to basically act blind. Can't have fancy fight scenes when that's the case.

So there you have it, Disney is respecting Lucas by allowing him to control when and how the originals are shown and sold. His attitude has also changed over the years. Han shooting first is something that makes perfect sense and is arguably essential to Han's character, but George became more sentimental as he got older and didn't like the idea of kids idolizing someone so cold hearted. So he had Greedo shoot first, then later cut it to be more like the two of them fire simultaneously.
