Third times the charm? This time it was.
After having recently watched both the 1922 and 1979 versions of Nosferatu I was well prepared this time. Initially I was concerned the film would veer too far away from the story set forth in previous iterations.
While there are some notable changes, particularly with the removing of the Van Helsing character and replacing him with another. A "disgraced" professor who is well versed in the occult. Named Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz and aptly played by William Defoe.
As well as some other changes such as the sexual overtones (replacing the sexual undertones of the previous versions) and the increased role for the Knock character, I found this adaptation to be quite faithful to the past. I also found the larger role for Knock to be an improvement over the original.
One qualm I had with the movie is that at times (especially while in the Count's castle) I had a hard time seeing what was on the screen. Although this issue lessened a great deal by the time everyone is in Wisborg again.

Now the elephant in the room and in many other reviews is Lily Depp's performance. After the much more reserved performance by Isabelle Adjani (Nosferatu 1979) many people were surprised by Depp's much more emotional, extreme and in some people's opinion, excessive acting in the role of Ellie. I found her version of Ellie to be quite acceptable considering she has ptsd and is being terrorized by a vampire. It is truly hard to know how someone would actually behave in that situation and I didn't have any issues with her performance.
4/5 stars

Fair review.

Do you think that one guy had def with his dead wife? I viewed it as him just crawling into the coffin with her and that’s the only way he would fit

Reminder that they did not need Orlok to fuck Ellie to kill him. They just had to keep him out of his grave until dawn.

Von Franz is a weirdo at best, a coward at worst.

Funny enough, he kind of did. Orlock clearly has the hairstyle and historical clohting of an Eastern European Cossack. Cossacks historically led pogroms against Jews in Russia, Ukraine and other areas of Eastern Europe, so by making him an undead Cossack immediately removes the implications of Jewish-coding.

I think the implication is that Orlok was always supposed to fuck Ellen until dawn and die with her, consummating their marriage in death. That was his plan.
He wasn't stupid enough to fuck her and then casually forgetting about having to go home early.

Dafoe just understood it and realized that best way to finish the plague and killing Orlok was to allow him to win, but sacrificing Ellen in the process.

In my theater at least the dark scenes in the castle were dark but visible. Did you watch on tv/monitor or in the theater?
I agree with Depp's performance, it was good, I've had to deal with people with BPD and seen stuff her character did first hand, and the contortions are pretty messed up and weird which I liked, I'm always pro weird-shit-in-movies.

My biggest gripe is the ending with the coffin plot, it felt a bit rushed.

Good movie 4/5.

It's meant to be viewed that way. For her it probably was a sexual experience, it just wasn't physically. It was the opposite, instead of joining bodys and sharing something, potentially creating life, it was taking from her, to destroy and consume. As close as the creature could get to the act and as close as it could want to.

Well Orlock does trick Kraut Harker to sign away his rights to his wife. (He tells him to sign the documents translated into ancient Transylvanian so that he can earn his commission on a real estate transaction. But then he tells Lily that her husband signed away his rights to her for gold.)
In this particular instance Orlok was behaving exactly like some Jew lawyer.

+ Orlok castle scenes, Orlok in general
+ A few cool visuals here and there

- Naive, dumb script with dumbed-down, unsubtle and inorganic dialogue that feels more like an episode of the Cabinet of Curiosities than an Eggers film.
- Characters are talking in English but referring to each other as "herr", just moronic
- Hard to praise the good photography when every 5 minutes there is a CGI scene that makes Van Helsing look like The Color of Pomegranates
- No message, no moral, no mystery, no intrigue, no burning questions, there is just nothing going on in the movie on an intellectual level.

Call me filtered, maybe I am filtered. I went in with very high expectations because I loved every Eggers so far, even the Northman in all its weird messiness.
But I got so little out of this. People describe it as some labour of love passion project but to me it feels like Eggers just phoned it in. I thought it would be a heavy, serious movie, instead it almost feels like a darker adventure film in the vein of the Mummy or Van Helsing, but less fun.

Tf you expect from a vampire movie? Why does every movie these days have to have some kind of message. I don’t give a fuck what message a director of a nosferatu movie wants to convey. Keep morals to a minimum and let the audience just enjoy a simple good nosferatu movie

He knew he needed to leave but his hunger and attraction to her was to great; he's a beast of carnage and lust and she used his animalistic impulses against him, by killing him through his lust. That was the sacrifice she incurred.

He was van Helsing. There was no replacing, the first two Nosferstus don't have van Helsing in it.

Yes I know the 70's one has a character named van Helsing but he's not the Stoker van Helsing, he's just a random doctor with Helsing's name slapped onto him. He stakes Dracula (but only after Lucy already took care of him) and that's where the van Helsing similarities end.

My one major complaint about the film is how little attention is given to the plague aspect of the Nosferatu canon. In Herzog (and the original afaik, though I haven't seen it) the plague and the townsfolk's reaction to it play an important role in the story, and in this version it's almost non-existent.

I think the moral of Nosferatu was how the new religion deemed women of occult power useless when they were extremely gifted against the dark forces. Science and reason means nothing against true paranormal power.

manbad
I liked the movie but this one scene where Ellen lashes out onto their family friend, who is asking them to leave after his wife got near-killed

>You hate me! Man are bad you're not superiour to me!!!
>What are you on about miss, we hosted you for months and took care of you and paid for all the expenses...
>YOU TIED ME!!!

last line is presented as some sort of epic comeback but it doesnt make any sense at all, they tied her cuz the doctor said so, not because they are some evil bondage maniacs who tie people for their enjoyment. Later its revealed that Ellen is fully aware that she is causing all this shit so that scene makes even less sense.

1. Why would Orlok travel a 1000 miles for a mid Germoid female when there are millions of qt slavs in between and
2. Why did he even have to travel by boat, the entire trip between Transylvania and Germany is just continuous land? The pleasure cruise was weird.

Dracula is inhuman, a literal demon, he does not care about women. He is pursuing Ellen because she unwittingly cursed him to love her when she once communed with him.

>Why did he even have to travel by boat, the entire trip between Transylvania and Germany is just continuous land?

Because originally, in the Bram Stoker novel, Dracula takes a ship to England. Since this is a classic moment, F.W. Murnau adapted it anyway and Eggers followed it.

i hate eggers, so i came into it with prejudice. but it's a solid movie, good directing, pacing, acting. like the original, it suffers from too much investment into atmosphere (but very good job in making vampire movie atmospheric in 2025) and too short of the actual story. i think depp was perfectly ok for the role, and her nipples probably beat any other potential cast for miles.

Yeah there was no message though, we're like, all made of stardust and when you die that's it, so light up a roach and let's watch some Rick and Morty!

This is not a message. Also book is so much better, there is no romance and the end is fucking awesome, but kikewood is too dumb and in love with the vampire looking like one of them to ever film this kino:

>In Galatz, Romania, the hunters split up. Van Helsing and Mina go to Dracula's castle, where the professor destroys the vampire women. Jonathan Harker and Arthur Holmwood follow Dracula's boat on the river, while Quincey Morris and John Seward parallel them on land. After Dracula's box is finally loaded onto a wagon by Romani men, the hunters converge and attack it. After routing the Romani, Harker decapitates Dracula as Quincey stabs him in the heart. Dracula crumbles to dust, freeing Mina from her vampiric curse. Quincey is mortally wounded in the fight against the Romani. He dies from his wounds, at peace with the knowledge that Mina is saved. A note by Jonathan Harker seven years later states that the Harkers have a son, named Quincey.
