You have more "big" games sure and the quality of the groups varied more. But, the old format was more interesting due to the real risk of being eliminated or dropping down to the Europa League some teams had. Now, if you just care about big clubs you can just watch a few league stage games and then skip the rest and just watch the playoffs when big team are actually at any risk of being eliminated.
