At the risk of making an essentially empty comment, people say lots of things that they have little intent or ability to go through with. Musk might really want to go to Mars but that doesn't mean he will succeed. Trump is extremely fickle. Should Musk get on his nerves (he probably will), expect the bromance to end. Space is much bigger than Musk so if that were to happen, it might have some negative consequences for SpaceX but overall not a big deal.

Mars is just one of Musk's big promises that he uses to keep public opinion about him favourable. Compared to others like hyperloop possibly he is really interested in spaceflight, but a Mars mission when it has been decades since a man walked on the moon is folly. It's just too costly, complicated and full of risks. Even though I consider him a moron, I appreciate that he keeps the money flowing for rocket development, but I would prefer that he would shut up about Mars and whatever libertarian erotic fantasy it should represent and do more doable projects. I mean, spaceflight is not my forte, but why not creating a private ISS or possibly a lunar base since he is now in the White House?
