spore
Do this count as a scientific game or is it just pure hogwash pretending to understand how evolution work?

Hogwash. They had two teams of people working on it, people who wanted it to be realistic and people who wanted to make it cute. The cute people won. It's a game so you're playing god, evolution definitely doesn't work that way. But, had the realistic people won then you'd have to do things like start out designing the biomolecules of life first, which would have had implications later in the game.

what the fuck are people like you doing on the science board

you can prove evolution with a basic thought experiment. which owl is more likely to survive in a snowy environment with predators: a black owl, or a white owl? the white owl, which means it's also more likely to have the chance to spread its genes. imagine this kind of thing happening over millions and millions of years and you can see how things would drastically change over time

evolution is the most rational explanation for why things are the way they are

it could have been scientific if there wasn't a space stage that is entirely based on science fiction and not real world dynamics

well the sad part is that in order to market and sell a game like this, it has to be cute in order to attract a wider audience. most people are not really interested in clear cut science. realism doesn't sell nor does it make for interesting gameplay

i think spore is a useful tool though to get children interested in biology regardless of how accurate it actually is. if spore was a truly accurate simulation of biology, none of us would have ever heard about it and this conversation never would have happened

You can prove very miniscule forms of evolution. There is zero evidence for large evolutionary changes.

rare mutations can cause drastic changes over time

i would be very interested to hear what your personal theory of the development of life is. and don't say god, because you and i both know that isn't any more plausible than evolution

what does this last part mean? do you not believe in the human brain? or do you believe that consciousness is stored externally in some astral realm? do you actually find that more believable than evolution

The problem is that most of the people on the 'realistic' side were useless 'idea guys' who had no appreciation for how ridiculously complicated some of the ideas they were pitching would be to actually execute. Cute side won out because while their ideas were less interesting and ambitious, they were doable.

the original announcement and demo were much more serious in tone. they still generated lots of interest
people were shocked when the game turned out to be a cartoony joke instead of a kinda grim alien life simulator. there was a big stink about it

Redditor faggots think science stopped 30 years ago and have no idea that almost every study done since states that there is basically no evidence for large evolutionary changes and that we almost certainly didn't evolve from apes.

The exact same thing happens with studies done on IQ and socioeconomics. Turns out everything they preached in the 80s and 90s was false and that it almost all comes down to genetics which can largely be broken down on broad racial lines.

Spore makes me depressed because I followed it from day 0, watching their grainy low-res recording of a projector in a conference room. Whatever alpha they demonstrated had underwater cities/animals and a brain as a separate body part. So you could stay in the creature stage or even just stay a fish if you wanted, like there were multiple multiple paths of play beyond "eat meat or dance."

There was a simpler version of this in the 1980s. It was mainly aimed at children as an educational game. They tried to create a self sustaining ecosystem by breeding various creatures found on a planet that was in danger of ecological collapse. Their space ship brought along a bunch of different species that could be bred into the planet's species to restore the balance.

anon it's common fuckin sense. Just think about it. You don't need a source to say that small changes add up to big changes.

What's your alternative explanation for the variety in species? Don't tell me you think this is all just a simulation

Wrong if they could mathematically model it to an accurate degree in a simulation, everyone would have heard about it, more people would know spore than mavis beacon because the government would be subsidizing it because gameplay would be a cornerstone of every school science class.
