Not specifically, but I've been taking professional portraits occasionally with a pair of manual chinese speedlites, a 5-in-1 bounce/shoot through, a neweer softbox and a pair of light stands for years. You can probably learn a lot by trying to recreate a setup, strobist.blogspot.com has all the knowledge you need and some example setups, it's worth sitting down with your camera and trying it out for a day.

I've been studying Newton's work with mirrors fairly recently and this time I have two people who reached out to me wanting to do this kind of stuff. We'll see if they show up, but at bare minimum, my assistant will model it.
