I own a Casio P&S that ONLY takes photos like this. Everything is cosplay... food, pets, even landscapes all come out looking like the world is one big cosplay convention.
It's maddening.
Last wedding I shot was so bad that the bride accused me of pedofiling and refused to pay. No worries, I sold the pics to a r*dd*t'r for twice the price.

OP's reference photo isn't that good to begin with, harsh light and a distracting background. I use 500W and feather with a 140cm softbox to get inky blacks albeit indoors.

Lol you are doing the most basic of flash photography. Maybe learn to work with the lighting you have instead of just using high powered flash to overpower ambient lighting and crush everything to black.

Flash with a diffuser and a camera with a CCD sensor.

This was taken in 2023 during C103. I used a VND set to about 8 stops, along with an AD200 at full power through a 20 inch SMDV softbox. See exif data for the rest of the data.

Softbox in one hand, camera in the other. This is because comiket enforces an arbitrary "no light stands/tripods" rule.

I'm also weak and carrying about ~10KG of combined camera gear, anime porn (i hit up all my circles before going out to the cosplay area), and food and water.

I go to winter comiket every year so you might see me around.

How much do you usually make at cons and how many bookings typically?

Went to a con last year and took some analog pics.
Was bored most of the time tho and it's annoying constantly asking people, if I can take their pic.
Maybe connecting with some people for a shoot is the way to go, but I hate networking.
Also sought out some people to meet up with at the con and that guy greeted my by showing me some porn pic on his phone.
Maybe I'll go again, but I'd have to consider first.
