Recently got a film scanner, so I started digitising some old negatives from my family.
Most rolls are from the 90s, but there is a box of slides from around 1962.
First shots are from Mauritius and were shot on AGFA Vista 200.

Something has definitely been lost with the decline of film. Most vacation shots nowadays are gray overprocessed phoneslop. Rather sad.

Quite impressive uniforms.
I find it quite shocking how clean London looks compared to now on some of the other shots on this roll.
Also strange to consider that at this time the UK was roughly on par in terms of wealth with the USA.

What kind of scanner? I want to scan all the thousands of negatives and images my parents have, before they pass. They are getting very old and I think they would appreciate it.
I’ve been looking at both cheap and expensive options, but don’t know what to get really for good quality that does not take ages.
Thanks for sharing.

It's a Plustek 8200i, I got it for 250 euro second hand. I'm pretty pleased with it honestly.
Not sure how many rolls you need to digitise, but I'd be aware that it takes me about an hour per roll so if you've got a lot of negatives it'd be a longer term project for sure.
I'm sure your parents would definitely appreciate it though, and I also think it's a nice thing to have for yourself. I feel closer to my family having done these.

I'm converting to positive in negative lab pro, and so scanning the frames as RAW positives in the scanning software, so you could potentially save on time by scanning at a lower DPI and inverting them in the software included with the scanner.
Other than that the only faster option I know of is DSLR scanning, which can be more or less expensive depending on how you do it.

20, 21, 25, 32, 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 45, 48, 54 are the best ones imo. Some compositional flops but that's not something worthy of judgement from casual holiday pics obviously - and honestly most of these are better pics than what most people would take today. Either someone in your family has an eye for photography, or film just made everyone a lot more considerate of composition and taking shots that are actually worth taking as opposed to random garbage

If you hadn't had said Dartmouth, I would have sworn that was the old access road to Sandy Point Sailing Club on Hayling Island.

>guessing that's due to my scanner using quite a neutral backlight and slide projectors being quite warm
I've been scanning a few slides from around the same time and just figured it was because they were poorly stored, but this does make sense

I really miss the 90s and early 2000s constable uniforms from the anglosphere, they were clean and recognisable. No high vis, no militarised belts and jackets and no officers covered in tattoos.

Same. I'm up to me tits in fucking negatives going back to 1957. Every time I open an envelope and it's got slides in it instead I almost gazz in my face out of excitement, because oh boyyy do I fuckin hate negatives now.
Negatives take all my fucking time to correct. The positive slides seem to have aged incredibly well in comparison. I do love pulling color data out of a faded, trashed slide/neg. Like being a time god and saving a moment in time from being lost forever.
Even though a generation from now, everyone who knew, or could identify, or care about any of these images will be dead & they'll all go in the landfill with all the rest of everything we all worked for. Oh well.

Yep. Looks like mid 90s. Can tell by the furniture & clothing. & is also why the film quality is what it is.

I remember pre-9/11 when police were actually still pretending to be "peace officers", and dressed in the legally required blue (a calming color), before they all played too much COD and went down to the mil surplus store to larp as soldiers & changed their uniforms to the darkest possible shade of blue indistinguishable from black to appear intimidating instead. & then just started attacking the public for lulz with armored vehicles, light tanks & drones. Da po-po became obsessed with power and became da gestapo. So now they'll all have to die when the revolution comes. Such a shame.

From NE ohio, miss when it actually got cold and froze over like this. Shit hasn't happened like that for 20 years. Remember up on the lake you'd see icicles a foot wide going from the gutters to the ground. Miss those colds.

Rocky sounds like the rocky mountains, but they're landlocked. Alternatively, that could be anywhere on the west coast from northern california up to canada.

It does make you think twice when you only have 28 shots to a roll

If you’re poor. Everyone I knew blew through film like candy. Pack o’ ‘dak a day. They only saved the gold ones.
Its not film vs. digital dragging photos down. Its phones, MMS/imessage, and the sense of disposability. These were photos taken and saved to be looked at later. Modern "people" take photos to text them immediately (to people who are right fucking there) and then totally forget. There is no future value in their photogtaphy.
