I've been enjoying my rx100, some anons told me not to get the vii because it's got a slower lens to make up for the 200mm focal length. Instead telling me to get the earlier 24-70mm models
But desu I feel the focal length is the best part about it, 24-200mm is so versatile for a daily carry point and shoot. it gives you something a phone can't provide.

As is a large sensor and a fast lens, giving you better low light performance (along with better IS) and a (real) shallower depth of field. It just depends what you need, I don't often find myself in unexpected situations where I'll need more than 70mm, it's usually planned so I'll take my other camera out with a 70-200mm or 150-500mm.

I've been wanting to get a little camera for my travels, equal parts photo and video, any recs?

Yeah I've been seeing those shilled, they look pretty good desu, the x100v (expensive) and xm5 (reasonable)
>>4380920
Had my eye on the rx100vii because it's such a ridiculously complete compact package, but surely there should be a 100viii coming soon?

I doubt it, they used to be yearly releases and now it's been 5 years since the last one. They're just been slapping the same old sensor into vlogging bodies instead. You've now got four lenses to choose from (24-200mm, 24-70mm, 22mm, and 18-50mm) but they're not interested in putting an EVF in the ZV bodies. Other than a different focal length I don't think there would be much to add to an RX100 VIII, unless they come out with a new sensor.

I always end up taking pictures of them more than I take pictures with them. I just have no use case for them. I would rather carry a huge DSLR because the size and weight doesn't matter to me. I'm not trying to be sneaky so I gain nothing. Usually if I want the "digital lomography" look I use an old camera phone.

I wanted a camera to take portraits of people in non-extreme condition (no ultra low light, no shit weather) and thought I should go with an old Nikon or Finepix with an 85mm 1.8
Then I realized that with this set up this bad boy can get great shots and be also extra discreet and portable.

It's surprisingly good. It's taking some adjustment to get used to shooting without a viewfinder, but none of the problems people complain about bother me, but my demands aren't very high. I do love the sensor though. I love it so much that I bought a K5 today, so I could have the same sensor in a weather sealed body and a viewfinder

I've got a FF for bokeh, low light events and portraits, desu it's rare I'm out and I see something interesting where I need to isolate a subject with depth of field. It's a crutch for most people anyway and is usually solved with good framing.
I've used a friend's a6400 with a tamron zoom in the past and the bokeh was very underwhelming, I imagine the little 1 inch sensor on the rx100 would be the same even at F1.
>PS5
>Original A7

Based, this is sure to make some anons seeth

Depends I think, with how Fuji are making a shit load of money with their x100 we might see Sony create a smaller retro camera that's a mix of the a6700/rx100 with a fixed lens.
They have a record of making random cameras eg: A7C (which imo was done to further cuck Fuji/Nikon portable crop offerings)

The RX100s have the same size and res viewfinder as the A7C (0.6x, compared to 0.7x of the II), so it can be done in a tiny camera. It is definitely usable and it's a nice option to have on sunny days where the rear screen can be pretty much unusable unless you shade it with your hand.

Also see the fudged white balance color science troll. Panasonic shills harder than OM system, and on 4chan… so desperate.
Notice we got clive and a revival of anti sony spam in time with its release. The shills already know. Its like the s5ii release and g9ii release. Much shilling, 20 different people say

I can't believe how small they are for FF, its smaller than some crop cameras

my r6 is kinda heavy so was thinking of moving to a smaller crop and just running one camera, smaller body and lenses being the main factor

TBF Sony jpg colors are actually really good if you're not poor. These days they're up there with canon and fuji, definitely ahead of nikon's "ken rockwell's take on an iphone" colors WAY better than panasonic.
They have the same problems in jpeg as every camera: sharpening and noise/moire reduction are crap and there is no such thing as good auto white balance, so your friends will use (you) as the example for cameras not being much better than phones, because the automatic shit they put on cameras so they can say they shoot jpeg is actual fucking trash. yes, even with fuji. good colors, but fine detail is ass and no amount of cope about standing 4 feet from an 8x10 or how zooming in is evil will actually stop normal people from zooming in or looking at prints closely, and asking "is this supposed to be better than my so called AI phone smears?". You whine about "pixel peeping", they say "i can look at a picture however i want, sorry your camera sucks". Imagine not being a failed painter so blurry pics could be intentional instead of gear cope.
HDR modes on cameras are also total shit.
Toggling jpeg settings on screen is a time waster.
Just open raws in capture one, set up nice nr/sharpening defaults and -5 saturation as standard, fix AWB overcorrecting for max whiteness all the time so light can have actual color to it (copy and paste fix), do your highlight protection and DR things, and export, and only then do cameras beat phones, regardless of brand.
The standard in photography, including for using fuji, is shooting raw. jpeg engines, like auto and scene modes, are half baked crap from 2010 (just like phone integration is literal shit). And knowing how many luddites are in japan, they're probably there for the domestic market that's still stuck in 2010. The sooner you realize the better.
t. fuji user, ex-snoy (snoy dont have no xe4+27, sorry snoyboys, fix the a7c evf and ill cum on ur back)

I personally think its hilarious that phones have totally beaten cameras if you don't do all of this and engage in the requisite copes (ie: PICKSL PEEP NOOO! DR bad, siloughettes like everyone else GOOD!, muh commie sounding HCB quote, etc etc etc)
The japanese are incompetent. These cameras run up to $1699, $2000, $4500, with $500-8000 lenses, and they still can't produce better IQ and dynamic range in jpeg than a hobbyist can with a canon rebel t7 and a copy of capture one, and are actually so bad that a fucking iphone 16 has better fine detail, more accurate colors, less ugly noise, and more dynamic range than any jpeg out of any camera with under 45mp.

honestly i second the whole "sony colors meme" opinion. unless you're constantly taking portraits, literally who gives a fuck. its overrated and a bigger issue that's made out to be when half the time you're gonna edit the pic in post.
i have a sony zv1 (same colors as a6400/a7c/a6700) and i like the colors on it more than my nikon z50, enough that i'm more often satisfied with the .jpegs coming off the camera than the nikon
personally re: zv1, its not a bad camera re: iq (aviation general in /n/ has a bunch of pics i posted recently from it) but i do find two complaints with it
-lack of dynamic range from low light + small sensor has me occasionally missing the shot
-fragile/delicate, feels like it'll break easily as a edc cam
im looking for a sub-$300 a5100 to replace it, its a 1/2 inch thicker but its probably the smallest apsc cam that's not a $1000+ ricoh gr3/fuji x100 (theres the canon m100/m200 but i like snoy more)
>>4381871
a company like apple or samsung has a ridiculous budget + some of the best photo engineers in the industry, that's the other thing you're missing. i bet apple's budget on the last iphone's cameras is more than nikon's yearly revenue. samsung folded their dslr/camera division to focus on galaxy phone cameras
and the phones have better processors, something like digic 7/8 or bionz x is a fucking joke compared to the amount of ram/cpu/gpu a phone has (remember they can play games pretty well now, they have gpus which is part of the reason you can edit raws on your phone now)

Nah that's pre 2018 Sony crop cameras, they also have worse colours. Rx100vii, A7C and a6700 all on the new colour science.
Their full frame cameras are pretty good in the heat and the A7C has weather sealing (unlike the newer a6700 that despite all it's AI gimmicks and better controls lacks it, good luck in light rain)

Also see: log gammas, raw video, 10 bit color

Identical? Have you shot each side by side? The colors from each manufacturer are very different, and the A7C can't even stand in comparison to the rest (regarding colors). Awful, awful skin tones on that thing. Nobody can touch nikon color science, and the lumixes are not bad (if you like the magenta cast).

Absolute bullshit. I have used all of these and use an a7c following a rental with a ZF I reviewed for YT. Every 24mp FF sensor has great colors. In blind tests people actually prefer the color out of sony and fuji. They're selling because they're well liked not "horrible colors POS cameras that instantly explode" (-a panasonic shill), same for "objectively unusable canon blobs that will end your sex life if you carry them in public" (-a sony shill). If you think any 24mp FF out today is somehow bad, skill issue or shill issue.
Now:
Everyone must know that on gearfag forums, and especially on 4chan, there's a strong likelihood that there is a constant presence of paid shills, similar to the continuous presence of crypto shills on /biz/ and the paid marketers shilling various chink phones and apple products on /g/ to compensate for all the revenue 4chan loses to 90% of its users blocking ads. Someone who claimed to be a fired janny once confessed on /g/ that hiro and the staff have deals with paid shills to protect their posts in return for money similar to having ads up. Cheap pajeet-staffed marketing times have been on reviews and comment sections for nearly a decade - ie: reddit is mostly ads and USAF shills, I mean really, reality check. BASIC CAPITALISM. Anyone can comment = anyone with a cent to gain WILL abuse that (also see: commies and wumao).
Many of you must have noticed that /p/ has an unusual phenomenon of extremely dedicated pro-brand and anti-brand posters that make other gearfaggy areas of the internet look sane. And surely, you have noticed that we have these helpful posters who always notify us whenever canon and panasonic have crazy sales or refurb deals on their website. Because buying a cheap one on ebay doesn't send money to their employer!
t. Actually has experience in the shilling biz. You think blocking ads isn't just cutting one head off the hydra?

I ran out of characters but I really implore you guys to believe this and not call me a schizo
Because I HAVE been paid to recommend consumer and investment products here on 4chan when my youtube gig was in a slump, and while my employer didn't disclose any deals with hiro only a fool would think he wouldn't be taking them with such a high rate of ad and tracker blocking among this userbase.
Literally every single 24 megapixel full frame mirrorless you can buy today can take the exact same photos. If you believe otherwise you are 100% being bounced around by my fellow shills.
One more thing you should know, since you definitely already know most of photography youtube is literally ads:
A lot of youtubers are samefagging and creating fake drama with the help of their discord server so they can read 4chan threads out loud and do funny voices. This is super common on the general thread containment boards but be wary of anything that seems "too epic". I can't prove I'm not doing this, and I know youtubers who do this, but you should be aware that this happens.

>Literally every single 24 megapixel full frame mirrorless you can buy today can take the exact same photos
I actually agree with this, but I disagree with every camera having the same autofocus and ergos. Nikon Mirrorless AF fucking sucks pre-2023 and it's unironically on the level of a early Sony Alpha like a a5100 or a6000.
The whole colors thing is way overrated too. I got memed into believing Sony colors were awful until I bought a Sony camera....and the colors and exposure control on this camera are good enough I just use the jpegs straight off the camera after a quick crop or leveling and hitting the auto button in Lightroom for Android. I don't even bother shooting raw anymore. I like posting on /p/ to share my photos.

Are you talking about SOOC jpeg colors or the ones that the raw renders? Because those are 2 very different things. I was talking about raw colors. Can't tell the difference with SOOC jpegs.
And I'm not saying that the colors are POS. I'm saying that era of sony renders colors in such a way in lightroom, that it is hard to get the skin tones to look natural. They lean green, even when you fix the white balance. Reason is unknown to me. For what I've heard, it's not a thing anymore in the more recent cameras.

Hes right. Skill issue or shill issue.
Every sensor has the same raw data. They are all using the same core hardware. Only the input profile and lens change. Some lenses have color casts and color shifts. Some don’t. My sony with my raw processor has beige skin, not green skin. Sorry about adobes shoddy darktable tier work.

Nailed it. I've processed RAWs from all the major brands except Panasonic. It's not all the time. But there are times when Sony and Nikon leave you with a stubborn green or blue cast that's hard to get rid of. No idea why, and a simple color temp adjustment or color balance change either doesn't completely eliminate it, or screws up colors in another way. It's worse in video because even 10-bit log isn't as flexible as 14-bit stills RAW.
I can't say it's so horrible or consistent that one should just avoid either. But it was definitely a reason for me to stick with Canon all the way back when I was tempted by the A7Rs. And the reason why a friend with a boatload of pro Nikon cameras and lenses (shit like the D850, Z7ii, 500mm f/4) ends up shooting his Fuji cameras a lot of the time.
>but muh blind test!
Useless because you're not testing for the problem. When there's not a problem RAWs from any brand are in your hands. You can decide the look and color that you want. Preferring one over the other is retarded because you can produce any final product that you want. The couple of tests setup (i.e. Northrups) just didn't happen to be in lighting conditions where the problem was evident. But people absolutely do run into it.

Just admit it's an issue. I don't claim that lack of 3rd party RF support isn't an issue for Canon. I think Canon is stupid for not fully opening the mount (at least they're starting to). EF catalog mitigates the problem for the most part, and the RF catalog is awesome, but as time moves on there will be interesting 3rd party glass that Canon users might miss out on. I don't blindly defend a stupid move just because "hur it's muh team!"

99% of sony color issues are
“Dont use LRs prepackaged profiles” (adobe purposefully released bad profiles, i remember them being partnered with nikon, hmm)
“Don’t use auto white balance under peaky artificial light for video”
“Don’t use default jpeg settings”
But these are all generic statements that apply to all cameras. Not using lightroom also magically improves canon high ISO and solves fujiworms for example.

Orrr it's a issue that most people don't care nearly as much as you'd think about because Sony cameras still have some of the best autofocus, smaller bodies, excellent low light performance, and great lens selection at reasonable prices. I barely shoot people anyways.
I'm personally switching from my Nikon Z50 to a A7C/A6700 after using this ZV1.

>excellent low light performance
Sony has fallen behind here. The 24mp sensors out perform the A7IV and in fact are neck-in-neck with the 12mp A7s bodies now. And the 45mp sensors out perform the 61mp A7R's. Sony sacrificed high ISO performance across their latest generation, even for sports in the A9iii. Not enough to knock them out of consideration, but they're not the low light kings any longer.

Sony user here. This fag >>4383273 is full of shit, and seems to be a schizophrenic shut in and resident troll.
I have never had color issues on any camera except for an ancient olympus with an adapted film lens that had a green cast near grass and foliage, 99% from lens fungus and old coatings. Modern lenses are always neutral. Skin tones are great on this. There are never any inherent color casts from this camera that you dont have to add yourself. It has never died in the rain. It works fine.
I have also used a pentax k3, nikon z5 and a canon r6. All for travel snapshits and family group portraits where you cant dial in an edit for just one skin type. They all do the exact same thing. They all take good looking pictures.
The people trying to convince you that sony has bad color, that canon will end your social life, that nikon has bad colors, etc are either mentally ill or paid social media shills. You are hanging out with absolute rejects. The only /p/ meme that might be true is panasonics breaking.
>>4383296
Youtube is all shill ads and total retards. Canon r6 and sony a7c both do poorly under consoomer grade LED lights if you use AWB without a dominant neutral color. Always set WB off a grey card when shooting video under artificial light. And all cameras add tints in scenes with lots of one of the white balance axis colors, so badly nikon had to split auto white into a bunch of different settings, so shoot raw and remember daylight = 5600k. Anyone who has been a >photographer for at least two cameras should have figured this out already. If you have color problems after figuring out how white balance works and are not using vintage, low end, or special purpose glass, you have competence problems, not camera problems.

>Canon r6 and sony a7c both do poorly under consoomer grade LED lights if you use AWB without a dominant neutral color.
R6 is absolutely fine under those conditions as long as you choose AWB-W. I can't think of a lighting setup that has given my Canon bodies problems dating back to the 7D, assuming the light was sufficient for the sensor's max usable ISO. Go all the way back to the 10D/1Ds days and you would very rarely run into quirky RAWs, kind of like Sony and Nikon now, just not as often.
>see you're a canon shill
Canon R6 has thermal issues in 4k. The IQ and color are gorgeous, the 10-bit clog3 files are awesome, the AF is very good, the IBIS is gimbal like...but Canon fucked up by not adding a heat sink and pipe to get the heat off the chipset. No brand is perfect.

>I'll let /p/ decide.
okay, I'm nta so I'll tell you. This photo isn't good. The composition sucks, her body is incoherent and random. You missed the crucial moment, he mouth is dumbly open. There is no curve to her body, it's just one unifrom thickness the whole way, she looks like a hotdog.
More poor composition elements:
>the dude sitting behind the pole
>the shadow running across her thigh
>the hand intersecting the net
This would be excusable if you had given us literally anything else to focus on, more context of the game or the event, but you made her the entire subject. Just admit you just wanted to creepshot women, at least then the poor composition makes sense, you're not a sports photographer, as evidenced by the fact you're using a 5Ds. There would be more dignity in it if you just admitted what you are instead of trying to get me to validate your shame.

Have you used a camera lately? When you talk about magic blue casts and green it sounds like using shitty lenses or not being aware different light sources are actually different colors. Like the average homo with a speedlight

I only heard about it a few weeks ago and I've been bored of shooting on my old A6000 for the last 6 years, and barely using it the last 2.
Hopefully I'll have some fun with this when I go to Japan in a few months time.

Do you even read your own shit before you post it? Do you have any idea how stupid you look?
>no more professional cameras in public lol
I love how with almost every post you reveal just how much of a nophoto you really are. Beach volleyball tournaments are typically on...wait for it...public beaches. Nobody is policing photographers because they couldn't if they wanted to. A team might have their own hired photographer there, but as long as you're not going on the "court" or interfering with the games, nobody gives a fuck. Same for surfing which is shot from a public beach. I shot from all around those games, you need permission to be in the water but not on the beach or pier. The reason that one is cropped (2.1x and still solid at 16x20 btw) is because I was out of position at that moment.
>nooo over 9,000 people have posted their cameras
But you have not. Still waiting. Just like I'm waiting for an 80mp real world 6x7, a 20 stop film shot, and proof of a 16 stop apsc sensor. Also waiting for proof of Sony weather sealing.

Excuses. Why are you afraid? You didnt post a camera the first two times people put up first. You backed out, and pretended it never happened. Why would you be honest this time? Its becoming obvious to everyone here you’ve gone full ken wheeler and eschewed taking photos for being perpetually and absurdly wrong about settled science and abandoned enjoying photography for having paranoid delusions on 4chan.

Considering every time I see a used sony for sale locally it's an a7ii or a7rii that's beat to shit, missing half its paint, and has dirt mashed into the click wheels and buttons, this advice works, as long as you can find one that hasn't been beat to shit.
And now /p/ will sperg out while reposting the same 5 busted a7iii's and an oft-contradicted weather torture test that involved a brand (olympus) now known for bribing reviewers and embezzling money.
Did you know the only time the G9II had worse shadow recovery than the OM1 was when OM system bought petapixel fucking cruise tickets? At all other times it's 1.5 stops ahead kek. No wonder that independent rando's a7riii pair worked for an hour in a rainstorm but as soon as IR hooked up with olympus to demo their weather sealing, the a7riii and d850 both had a problems. I bet they submerged the competing cameras in water just to make sure olympus would win
At least we no longer have the spamming sperg that reposted the exact same 3 broken fuji pictures every fucking thread while rambling about ukranian winters and a situation that was clearly a dead battery

>retarded sony shill doesn't understand that press contracts are negotiated behind closed doors
>not based of the brand press photographers actually want
If Pentax suddenly had an attractive offer for AP and they switched, would that make Pentax #1?
>Sony has the #1 market share spot for full frame mirrorless only.
>"internal data"
Independent, verified sources show that Canon is #1 in MILC sales. Sony issued a press release with no data and a bunch of asterisks, i.e. they purposely exclude categories to try and appear to be #1. They better be careful with that shit, it could run afoul of SEC rules.
>nooo canon just sells e-waste
In this market entry level apsc buyers are very likely to upgrade in the near future, and very likely to stay with their mount. It's not like the old days where most entry level SLR/DSLR sales went to people who just weren't happy with their P&S. The ILC market has shrunk to cover people who are serious about photography where the old P&S/low end SLR segment typically never upgraded or even bought another lens.
Sony had a very narrow window of opportunity to become #1 between the time the A9 came out and the time the R5/R6 were released. That window is closed. But they lacked the glass (literally, people were buying EF adapters for their Sony bodies) and just couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. People like me were tempted, but held fast because of glass and Sony's various problems (weather sealing, durability, professional support, and yes, color science).

Yeah, I've had this issue with my A600. I can fix it in post processing as a rank amateur, most of the time, but some of my raws would just have so much green and tint noise at lower light levels. Not that it matters, because I only ever put photos up on IG for friends and I'm not a /p/fag

Its not truly a sony problem, but a problem with adobes software. They’re the incompetents behind flash. They are also an official corporate partner of nikon, and the bad days for lightroom using snoys were also the days when sony mirrorless was an active threat to nikon, and it wasnt a done deal "nikon loses".
Im not saying to believe in conspiracies. But its less of a conspiracy when capture one refuses to support hasselblad at all, and nikon blocks sigma from FF Z mount, innit? Its actually pretty fucking ordinary.
C1+Sony users hear all this screeching about SNOYCOLOR and are confused

Im not saying to believe in conspiracies. But its less of a conspiracy when capture one refuses to support hasselblad at all, and nikon blocks sigma from FF Z mount, innit? Its actually pretty fucking ordinary.
C1+Sony users hear all this screeching about SNOYCOLOR and are confused

Basically raws do, and do not contain set color. Each camera model can use its own filter specs which means 5 different cameras with the same lens will get 5 different color renditions with the same processing. If you use a different lens, different colors. Then theres all the bit depth, whole image SNR, per pixel SNR shit.
The raw file format isnt an untouched data dump either. Its processed and each camera has some snowflake shit to itself.
But the way the raws data is interpreted is the biggest "if", and it varies wildly from proteam to program and by settings/profiles, and its here that shit gets fucked up. Adobe doesnt even render noise and sharpening the same as c1.

The same thing happens in video which means it can't be a RAW processor issue. I stg sony shills will cope with any excuse they can rather than admit their precious corporate brand has a few weaknesses. Sony will never sleep with you.

No, it doesn't. The adobe green tint cant be edited out unless you simply do not use adobes profiles and make your own with a colorchecker, or install a better processor. The video "greens" meanwhile are literally just the white balance. Set it off a grey/white object and wala. No green tint. You cant fix missed white balance in video because its an 8-10 bit lossy format, so get it right before you press record. Simple as.
The A7III was notorious for missing in auto white balance. That's it. And sony is so dominant now that every pathetic shill wishing canon would come fuck them in the ass is still harping on an entry level mirrorless from 2016 while the a7c on fly by and news agencies keep terminating their contracts with canon despite canon cameras offering way more speed and better video for less money, vs sony who cripples those outside of flagships.
Look around you at entry level mirrorless. Nikon doesn't have working autofocus under $1699. Canon forces NR at low ISOs on every EOS R, sometimes all. Fuji has inherently lower res sensors and shit AF. Panasonic cameras fall apart, assuming you get one with more than a sensor and a screen on it. Micro four thirds... exists. Big fucking deal. You will defend all of these and screech SKILL ISSUE SKILL ISSUE SKILL ISSUE. Meanwhile the a7iii's auto white balance sucking is way more of a skill issue than nikon and fuji not having functional autofocus, considering you only need to set white balance once per environment in video/jpeg, and never for raw.
Canon will not let you sit on its dick. You will gladly spend 7 days a week screeching about some minor problem with an entry level sony from 2016 and yet, canon's dick remains permanently outside of your asshole.
Here's to another seven days of you screeching about an entry level sony from 2016 and spamming /p/ with FUD because the sunk cost fallacy associated with your cannot POS R gear is melting your brain.

My ZV1 has now developed a creaking when I hold it at the grip above the buttons specifically. It seems to still shoot fine, I checked the screws. Oh well.
Went to a AutoX this weekend and shot some pics in between runs. This was cool, Ferrari 348 someone ran. He did alright. The gear whine and crunching every shift was kino.

Shooting from a lower angle like this looks better than from a higher angle I noticed. I used my Hoya CPL and I think because it's relatively small on the lens its giving me viginetting I have to bump up the saturation to correct. Or just removing light.

My ZV1 literally has the same AF performance as my Z50 and unironically better colors SOOC. Where I wasted a ton of time editing (or just slapping on the Canon 5D MK2 preset on the raw) of the Z50's pictures I usually just finding myself bumping the saturation and removing some shadows on the Sony's jpegs. I don't even feel like I need Lightroom anymore (NX Studio and free Lightroom for Android are good enough)

People, does President Trump look green to you? No, Trump is his normal shade of orange. And they do 4K60 with image stabilization which is miles ahead of this piece of shit. I expected so much more from a dedicated device. This piece of shit serves as my webcam for now. Oh, it only does 720p serving as a webcam. What a load of shit and a waste of money.

It will do better in some scenarios like capturing action in low light where you can't use computational stacking. Not great with that wide angle. And it's lost IBIS compared to the M1 and uses gyro data instead. The framing feature is cool if you can use it. I like dials and buttons but I agree, it doesn't really feel like the $700 for the ZV-1 II buys much improvement over a smartphone. Removing the ND filter also stinks.

Finally dropped and killed my Yashica T4. Wondering what to eventually buy to fill the void. Recently I was thinking about getting a GRIII or something similar on the digital side and experimenting with digital again. Need a cheap camera for my uncle and I've taken a look at the Canon EOS M line of cameras.
Which one to get? EOS M, M2, M5, M6, M10, M50? Also thinking of flashing Magic Lantern on it, could a 60 year old use that or is it plagued with the typical /FOSS/ issues?
Or should I get something else entirely?

The 4k raw video samples on Youtube of the EOS M look pretty good imho. Of course they are just short clips strung together and the magic lantern workflow seems annoying. I doubt a 60 year old would want to bother with it and the video recording limitations.

Lack of ibis will confuse the fuck out of him since even phones mog the fuck out of lens IS
Old sensor, UI autofocus etc will make him think it IS a phone
Im sorry bro but unless youre rich enough to buy leica and sony full frame cameras as gifts or are deeply familiar with a friends digishit preferences these devices are personal preference decisions. Most digitals are not really perceivable as good these days, and only your average pretentious new topofagraphics and back of head snapper could love them because a lot of them are just interested in learning to cope with shitty digitals. Its how it is.
They were great when your better digital option was a blob and good phone cameras didnt exist, but bro unless he asked for it buy him an amazon gift card not a shitty old canon pns

These pieces of shit, like most panasonic cameras (even the $2000 ones), break like nobodies business. High failure rate. Someone will say theirs is fine but for sub-1% market share they have a lot of unhappy campers.

A ricoh GR is not terrible. An om-d e-m5 mark two or three with the pancake kit zoom is not terrible. A broken camera does not even take pictures. The only thing as bad as a panasonic is playing the lottery with cheaper sony stuff.

I had a Panasonic ZS200 which was perfect but it broke. I want a new one but it doesn't look like they make it anymore. Did Panasonic replace it with something else? Or does another brand make something similar?
The ZS200 could fit in my pocket (barely but still), had a 1" sensor, and a 15x zoom. Is there any other camera that has those specs?

Tbh tho 200mm isn't useful for birding, I own a vii and the lens is a little soft past 120mm. I mostly use it for landscapes and street when I need a little more reach

Blind boomers who think that more zoom = more better, when in reality it usually means more compromises in lens design. You're sacrificing IQ in the most usefull range to get more reach with yet poorer IQ.

That's not how it works, you can't just add more zoom without making sacrifices. You're loosing more than a stop of light and almost certainly some contrast and sharpness for a blurry 200 f/11.

also kek, I forgot that your generation never goes outside and is afraid of nature. Among real adults, wildlife photography is one of the most common reasons to want a camera, and you need zoom for that. I'll bet you don't own a pair of binoculars either.
A $200 pocketzoom is better for wildlife photography than a $2,000 camera that can't zoom. Just like a $20 pair of binoculars is better for viewing wildlife than using your naked eye.
now for anybody who isn't a sheltered Zoomer: see >>4392061

Most "real adults" will benefit much more from faster wide end for social occasions, and most at least semi-competent photographers will benefit from better IQ in the normal range over blurry 350mm f/18. It's too shit to be usable for actual wildlife photography, the only thing it's good for is wildlife snapshitry.

Take a look at pentax, they havent even caught up with the autofocus chops of the nikon d200
The ricoh GR will never be a practical camera instead of an internet hobbyists toy. If you’re not interested in playing games with snap focus it will never be for you. They are more likely to turn GR into a hypebeast pseudo-luxury brand, release an official beanie, and do a shoe collab than they are to improve it meaningfully beyond adding a few megapixels because sony discontinued the old sensor.

I would like it if Nikon had a Z30 but without the big grip. Z mount on a compact APS-C or so would be nice to chuck a small zoom onto.
Sorta form factor like the ZV-E10. If I was in the Sony E mount ecosystem I'd get one.
Sometimes I bring around my Lumix camera from when I was a kid. Is the sensor pathetically tiny? Yeah. Do I care? Nah not really it's just a bit of fun.

What lens would you be putting on it? Even the 16-50mm sticks out further than the grip, as does the 28mm f/2.8 and 40mm f/2.

Anyone used that compact sony kit zoom ? It's only 28-60mm f4-5.6 but desu it only weighs like 170g or something miniscule. f4 on full frame is comparable to f2 on apsc sensor right?
I'm thinking of just picking up one for casual use and selling my x100 to zoomers

I had considered it as a I don't have a normal zoom, but I don't really see much advantage in the size and weight given the compromises. If I was going out with just one lens then the 24-70mm f/4 isn't exactly big or heavy, I wouldn't be tucking my camera in a tight space if I had the 28-60mm. Sure if I was going out with more than one lens then I could stuff the 28-60mm in a pocket easily, but if I'm taking say 3+ lenses then I'll be taking a small bag and if it's just two lenses then I'd rather just take a nice small prime.

I couldn't find a photo of one on a Z30 specifically, but the other bodies have similarly sized grips and the 26mm is barely slimmer and not if you have the hood/filter adapter mounted. It's also not a particularly good lens, and buddy was talking about a zoom lenses so that's not what he had in mind.

Yes but the big zoom is better
An apsc camera isnt worth it over that, better to just get a ff dslr if you want something that cant go in a pocket

The size and weight really feel perfect, I tried one out in the store recently and it felt like a point and shoot not a FF. It was only $180 and I was about to buy it and...
I want something wide enough for travel but still usable for portraits, the focal length is acceptable for me but jesus f5.6 at 60mm is too slow. Minimal bokeh which is a problem because it's such a versitile tool even at f3 or f4.
I'm thinking about getting a fast 50mm prime instead and calling it a day.

As someone that also owns an actual point and shoot as well, and RX100, an A7 body even with that crappy Chinese pancake doesn't come anywhere close. I just don't see the point of a really small lens if it's staying on the body, you're still not going to be able to put it in your pocket. You're just making compromises so that it sticks out an inch less when it's hanging from a strap around your neck.
