Corvids are great. Rudy is king.
Sorry fellas been a shitty winter and started a new job so it’s been an adjustment.
I do the birds at 4:45 and 6:45 now and it’s dark the whole time. Wife lets them into the run during the day and checks the water.
Got Rudy under a light in the greenhouse and she loves when I put warm water in the basin for her in the AM.
I’ll do a Rudy dump later it’s going to warm up to -1 later and I’ll go grab some pics off work because of the cold.
Plan is to have the pond area finished by spring and get a couple more duckers to keep her company.
I’m disappointed that she didn’t get release in the fall but it got too cold too fast and I was worried she wouldn’t be able to fend for herself. Hopefully, come spring we’ll see but I’m afraid she’s been too reliant on me too long now and is probably just our duck now.

The story so far:
One morning last summer I saw a mother woodduck and her ducklings in my yard. I even snapped a picture of them.
I live two miles as the crow flies from any water.
Later that evening the Mexican neighbor lady brought me over one of the ducklings that “got lost” and somehow got into their crawl space and they could hear it and rescued it. Since I have chickens and turkeys they brought it to me instead of leaving it alone. I looked for the mother and tried to set it safely from the cats but no luck finding any ducks.
I’ve never had any waterfowl so I came her for advice since my one duck book and everything on the internet was like “well that duck is as good as dead… woodducks don’t live in captivity.”
Several trolls and a lot of great advice later, and somehow Rudy had defied the odds.
I updated most of the summer and fall but had a catastrophic eye injury and got a new job so shits been crazy lately.
She’s a symbol of hope in an otherwise disjointed and terrifying reality.
I hope anon with the sick wife and the other guys are doing well. Like I said I’ll do a Rudy dump later.

>I bet that makes you feel like a big man?
nah, im actually below average height, work at a toy store, i just dont have any delusions about ducks being tasty, also, if you learned anything about mallard ducks, it would make bill cosby look like a saint. same with rabbits, sure they are cute, but cute does not negate tasty, i have 6 pheasants in my freezer right now

Respect. I thought you were a shitposting fag. I also don’t dig on the taste which is why I was hoping Rudy was a she so I could at least get some eggs. The plan now is to get a couple female ducks for companionship and eggs when I get a couple turkeys in February. I’m telling you take the turkey pill fren.

if it wasn't obvious, I'm europeeeean, never been able to cook turkey good, only had breast though
definitely if i get enough land for a pen or a hutch i would go with rabbits, solely because of the noise

I grew up with rabbits, chickens, turkeys, sheep, and a couple odd cow pig or horse. Rabbits are fine but chickens are better because you get eggs and meat. I don’t know which kinda European hellscape you hail from but Godspeed we all need to have a source a protein in the coming collapse.

Really happy to hear Rudy is doing great! Congratulations on the new job although it sounds likes it makes taking care of home harder. How is your eye doing? Find a doc that is worth a damn?My wife is doing excellent after the surgery. Recovery was much easier this time too. She still has some somewhat related issues but we’re also getting too old not to. Thanks for the Rudy update!

chickens are definitely more economical, just because they can essentially live off kitchen scraps, but, i just prefer the taste of rabbit meat, so kind of boils down to that.

also, rabbits yearn for death, lift one by the hind legs, it will naturally stick its head out, perfect for hitting with the back of an axe, a stick, lead pipe, whatever really, when it bleeds from the nose you know its dead

Comfy anon. I hope your garden and family grow.

They’re fucking with the feed. Have been since before Covid. Are again. Had several anecdotal interactions lately at farm stores. 1. Girl working the register asks unprompted if my chickens are molting weird because hers are eyes the bag of feed. 2. Kid in front of me last night buying oyster shell because his egg shells are thin now and he doesn’t know why… been supplementing with suet and layer feed but still nothing. 3. Kid blew the whistle on actual poisoning with pesticides bags of feed at the other farm store. Was supposed to be investigated by the epa. Nothing on google now.
Not only should you have birds (or rabbits if you’re European apparently). Have a way to feed them and keep them cooped up when the “bird flu” accelerates.
I’ve had chickens, turkeys, a Guinea, and now Rudy. I had a family of hawks in one tree and a family of crows in another in my yard. I have a flock of sparrows that follow me when I feed the other birds. Jays, cardinals, song birds, wrens, woodpeckers, and and various species of migratory birds (like wood ducks apparently). I have seen zero die offs except for when I was purchasing feed from the place that got called out for actively poisoning it. I have dozens of wild birds near my captive birds daily and if there was a bird flu I’d have it.
The three hawk chicks as they were learning to fly and hunt in the lawn.
