Yes my Glock 9mm is better than your bear defense gun

I always see talk of "bear defense" guns being these giant revolvers. What a load of crap. My G19 is the best bear defense gun in the world. 9mm can easily penetrate the skull and vitals of almost any animal in the world, especially with flat nosed bullets to resist deflection. 15-33 rounds of 9mm from a gun you've trained with regularly for years directed at the head/neck area of a large animal with both speed and precision beats the Hell out of 6 44 magnums you can't even afford to shoot splattered randomly over the animal's silhouette from a gun with a shitty DA revolver trigger that's impossible to reload under stress and gives you a perforated eardrum with every shot. Then you also have mountain lions, which are very fast but not that hard to put down, and in some areas wolves which travel in packs and are also hard targets for these stupid bear revolvers. Glock wins. There's no conceivable situation in which a big revolver gives me any advantage over any animal compared to the G19 that I always carry. Worst case scenario is I just carry Buffalo Bore or Underwood +p+ ammo with cast bullets, or M1152.

Does bear spray work against cougars? Cougars are the only creatures that really scare me when /out/ because they seem to be one of the few animals willing to hunt people.

it has been designed to deter wild predators. the key here is that predators who need to survive in naitcher are not generally willing to take any risks; a single injury or disability is a death sentence. they can't allow themselves to break bones, go blind, lose blood, injure one of their senses, etc.
ergo, the large cloud of pepper spray is enough to attack their senses and make them retreat to avoid injury, but NOT enough to blind or disable them on the spot, in fact that could create a much MORE dangerous situation.
so yes, bear spray should work on most wild animals. however for humans your goal is to disable them on the spot so you can escape so those pepper sprays are more concentrated.

Correct. You want a combination between hitting hard and capacity. 10mm hits hard and if you don't live in a shit state (I do) you can have a standard 15 round magazine.
>9mm can have a 33 round mag
Ya but you're realistically not going to hike with that. Thats what basketball Americans tuck into their waist bands. You could carry a spare 33 round mag but walking around with it is kinda silly and inefficient.
>rifle
Your best bet. If a bear is in pistol range, you fucked up.

I literally never said it was too heavy you illiterate retard. I said "you aren't going to hike with that." it's just not practical to have a 1 foot magazine in your pistol on your hip while you're hiking. Carry it as backup if you want the extra ammo.

why can't people accept that the possibility of being eaten by an animal in their natural habitat is just an unfortunate possibility of going outside? like if you are that afraid of it dont go outside. stop shooting all the critters just because they want to eat/protect themselves from this human creature that has invaded their territory. lol carry a gun i'll continue sleeping with my food in my tent and hoping that when my time comes it teaches the animals that humans are easy snacks.

the majority of predators prefer taking the weak or sick prey animals as they put up less of a fight. if an animal is attacking you it's because you are a beta cuck that doesn't deserve to live

But it's somehow more practical to carry a 3 foot long thing that weighs 7 pounds where the point of balance doesn't even coincide with any spot where you can hold it? Some of the miserable memories I have are hiking trips where I thought it was a good idea to carry a rifle.

Your picture proves my point. You can't carry a rifle like a bow by letting it rest idly in your hand, you need a sling. You're constantly trying to manage this massive object pulled against your body and it makes every single thing you do clumsy and awkward. I tried so many different "survival" rifles on various hiking and camping trips and my conclusion is that only handguns are suitable for foot travel. Rifles are for walking one mile from your truck to a deer stand and that's it. They can never become a permanent extension of your body that you can move through the mountains with long term.

That's different because you have hundreds of yards of visibility over there so you don't need to have any stealth ability at all, you can just stomp and sweat and huff and puff everywhere in thick hiking boots and then shoot the animal from long range with your scoped rifle. You're also not constantly crawling over tangled forest blowdown like in the East. None of those western deer hunters on TV could bag an eastern whitetail even if the season lasted all year.

I’m spending the summer in Alaska and have been thinking about getting a gun for bear defense. Is 9mm really enough for bear or should I just pay the extra shekels for 10mm? Has to be a handgun because I’ll be carrying it at work and won’t really be able to lug around a rifle or shotgun
