I've decided to hike by myself from now on, even if it kills me during these really cold winter months. I signed up for a guided hike last month just to get warmed up to the idea of hiking during winter and holy fuck, it was fucking horrible. All these fucking people hiking in a line like cattle. There was nothing exciting about it, if anything, it was really depressing. There was lots of boomers and ugly women, it felt like people use these sort of gatherings to socialize and make friends, it was depressing seeing them desperately trying to socialize and befriend one another, I'm never doing this again.

You aren't going to die hiking. Just wear appropriate clothing and bring appropriate supplies.
If you are somewhere with real mountains in the winter, stay out of avalance terrain.

What if I get lost? I doubt that's possible now considering I even bought one of those fancy satellite radios, but still, I guess I'm more terrified about coming across people than actually dying. I once went out on a hike and noticed there was a girl behind me, I got so anxious I told her if she wanted to pass me she could, and she passed me quick and disappeared, probably thought I was going to rape her or something, we were pretty deep into the forest.

I'll bite since I saw some people on the forum in a similar situation.
You book a guide for mountaineering specifically.
I think some people don't understand that mountaineering, also known as alpinism, means vertical progression, that is climbing on ice.
That's no joke, you need serious skills learned through training and gear.
Hiking is a different thing, you're unlikely to require a guide in most cases if you know what you're doing.
>what if I get lost
You must carry a map, if you cut trough the forest a compass too, or a GPS device.
Always carry something to signal your position in case of emergency, like a marine whistle.
>I told her if she wanted to pass me she could
You don't have to talk to anyone, just get to the side without staring them down like a maniac.
Returning greetings is a good habit.

I've always wondered this. There's a lot of good guides around me, if I hie one can I really ask them to teach me anything? I always thought a guide is just a person who guides you up the mountain and down, not an actual teacher. They obviously know their shit, but it common to ask them to teach you stuff along the way?

Do you think they'll just take the first guy off the street and go on a potentially lethal alpine tour?
Any professional guide will school you on the basics and more.

Can you go more in depth with this? I think what you're saying I should get is an actual mountaineering course. Guides usually charge a rate for each day depending on how long it takes to summit, but the main objective is to summit. An actual mountaineering course does everything you say, like teach you the basics before attempting to summit. A guide just choose the easiest route and gets you up and down quick. I don't know, this is my impression from the time I went up Mt Washington with a guide during winter, we did an easy router and then back down, he never really taught me anything. On an actual mountaineering course which lasts a week or two you get a group of guide who you can ask anything and they'll teach you on the spot.

If you're not climbing vertically, it's not mountaineering, and by what you're writing you're not.
Not too sure about mt Washingston but it looks to me that most winter routes in the USA are really easy and can be walked through with crampons, and sometimes an ice axe for safety.

I just did it.
It's like anything else in life, you either do it or you don't.
>Hiking, camping, rock climbing, surviving prison, going through college.
Even if you fail at least you tried.

You are a pathetic piece of shit and going outside isn't for you. Find a hobby where you can be a fawn around people.
