You can get a dopamine rush sitting on the toilet on break at your shitass job researching and buying trekking poles for some grand hiking adventure you'll never have the balls to take time off work for. I have to work hard to remind myself I have enough fishing gear and that when I feel the urge to buy something I really just have the urge to go fishing. I buy new gear then go right back to using the old stuff I love anyways, and the urge leaves me for a few days. It's tough when you can't make time to do the stuff you love.

In a consumerist society, a lot of people's hobby is buying things. Some people find other hobbies which are a route to the same hobby of buying things, e.g. PC gamers/builder who spend ages researching and discussing and buying the latest PC hardware. Or even just buying loot boxes in a game to have more than others.
Or photographers who spend ages on buying the best cameras and lenses but not much time taking pictures.
Or hikers who spend all their time buying gear and no time outside.

I hardly ever buy gear - basically only when I really need something or what I have broke and can't be mended. Used the same boots for years - in fact the first ones I bought, I hiked in them all over the world for more than a decade, only had to get rid of them due to an accident. Used the same coat for more than a decade, etc. You need very little to actually go outdoors.

The last bit of gear I bought proved to be extremely useful though, something I definitely should have bought sooner, but I expect it to last me 15-20 years. I won't say it what it was because I don't want shopping addicts to pursue another dopamine spike in researching it.

When I first started being an outist I went outdoors pretty infrequently. I’d go camping with family but never really did any significant outings. I had a hammock, comforter from college and an old army rucksack that I had from my time in military school. It worked great for what it was, but I would often be less comfortable than my friends who backpacked frequently.

when I got more serious into hiking/camping/backpacking I started to realize my gear was heavy/bulky as shit and I slowly started to optimize my set up to be as comfy as possible:

>asked if I could use my brothers old backpacking tent instead of my huge Coleman 4p tent I used in college
>got a proper Kelty backpack (85L because I was retarded and refused to use sleeping bag)

>was a stick fag realized my knees were hiking from not using poles and over exerting myself on mountains.
> got rid of the camp chair and used a closed cell foam mat.
>dropped big bucks and bought a super nice sleeping bag that allows me to sleep in the winter warm and can be used in summer weather if ventilation is opened.

Was it necessary? No not really, I could have continued to use my old set up and all it would have really done is probably made me stronger/less comfortable and slower while hiking.

Now with my current set up I lost pounds I have ergonomic gear that fits my specific needs, I can hike 10-14 miles a day if I get a good pace and am not hungover or some shit. All in all, those gear fag posts genuinely helped me out in finding a decent set up.
