American Discovery Trail

ADT
I would like to hike the American Discovery Trail this year, problem is there is limited info online and I have no clue what to expect. With most trails it is manageable because there is greater access to water, but the ADT looks sparse, and without knowing where those water sources are it's going to be a lot harder to know what to carry when I need it.
My second issue is with mapping, I can always just walk across the US but I'd like to remain on trail for as much as possible. No mapping apps have it saved. What are some ways to get a good map and navigate, and what are some other hurdles that I would come across on this trail?
I want to do it because it's fairly remote in some places, and just seems like something worth doing, because what else really is.

looks like it just follows roads, why not drive?

Everything here is going to be extremely boring

I'm doing it more for the challenge I guess, I don't mind the flat lands. I don't want to travel by plane or road anymore, at least not long distance, so it's between the ADT and the American Perimeter trail.
The idea is to be fairly remote but also close enough to civilizations I can practice transferring onto wilderness survival fulltime without completely fucking myself over by going to far away.

Everything here is going to be hard and you'll need constant water. Is this pretty much just Highway 50? I don't think there are really any linked consecutive trails that cross Nevada. Hiking across the width of Nevada just seems like it would be absurdly impractical to attempt.

Yeah it will will also be quite hard to time when you should do this.

Ideally you would want to cross the low desert in the winter. But you can't cross the entire state without going up and down multiple mountain passes, which will be quite difficult (and dangerous) in the winter.

Sounds fucking grim if so.

Is this actually a trail or did someone just put 'california to DC' into google maps?
I think .17hmr is really cool !0yShsFXK2. 01/01/25(Wed)23:41:57 No.2797850

Also deadly. I've never heard of this trail before but "need constant water" seems like an understatement here. Are there water sources here?

I think it's mostly through towns. A lot of the high mountains in Nevada do have streams though, but I'm not so sure the trail runs across them.
A couple people have done the trail all the way through, but they might be section hiking. First heard of this when I did the Colorado Trail, it passes through the same route as the CT for a good 100 or so miles.

If the trail follows highway 50, there is no way towns can be relied on for water. It is around 100 miles between each town.

The trail has a website with GPX files to download…

This trail is mostly designed for bicyclists if I recall correctly. It utilizes existing roads and trails for the most part, mixed between paved and unpaved. The western sections will require mountain biking.
I wouldn't recommended hiking this, and camping options in general are probably sporadic.

Wouldn't it be more practical to go north to Washington rather than through Nevada and the desert?

Idk about the specific area of Iowa and Nebraska in that image, but the east-west drive through those states is absolutely beautiful.

I agree. Those are states people go to the mall and don't do a lot else.

Iowa is at least cheaper to live, not sure there's a lot to do there

Not to mention the moment they get into Reno is on the back of climbing the Sierra Nevada range, and even funnier still, passing by Donner's Pass with an elevation of 7000ft

10/10 chances he eats someone.
