If you truly wish to, you have access to a great resource: the internet. Many states also have programs to help you learn about hunting. I'm fortunate enough to have a father that taught me, and provides me with my gear and firearms. It feels great hiking up mountains for hunting. Just remember to bundle up since you'll be sitting still for a long time.

Most states have squirrel season, but you can hunt them in private land and farms if they qualify as pests, like nut farms, walnut farms and orchards, you can get permission from the owner to "remove" them and they might even pay you a bit of chump change per head or to just take out as many as you can.
Squirrels will fuck a peach tree farmers shit up so most landowners I ask are happy that I came along asking permission to kill to eat.
They also make great practice for inexperienced hunters in gutting, skinning and field dressing small mammals.

Totally skunked here in Maine despite consecutive years of success. Warm year + tons of acorns on the ground is my cope for them not coming through 6 of my spots. Oddly enough, 5 other guys I know missed shots and two had misfires with their rifles - crazy...To further cope I booked a hunt down at a farm in Mass with a guide. Apparently there are tons of deer running through farms that need to be culled. Has relationships with the farmers to have tree stands and clients come through.

I'm going hunting for the first time this year. I'll be alone and trying to teach myself here. Rabbit season goes thru March in my state so that's what I'm starting with. Using a shitty .22lr since it's the only gun I can afford right now.
Any sort of advice on any aspect of hunting (preparation, finding the game, field dressing, etc.) would be greatly appreciated. I've done a lot of research and preparation but know there is a lot that more experienced hunters will know that I don't.

You shoot the thing, preferably in the head/neck as to spoil little meat and then eviscerate it either with a knife or by tearing the thin abdominal muscles open and removing the guts and lungs. went to my local hunting club last night because they had an open house to shoot bow and arrows.

dude teaching me was cool as fuck and was teaching me how to shoot since it was my first time and managed to get a couple bullseyes at 100m (leaf fag.) Was cool until I had like six 50 year old hunter guys standing behind me nit picking every single thing I was doing down to the autistic millimeter when I was doing just fine. all in all i learned a lot and listened to them and thought they had some good advice

I just got my lisence to hunt in Norway a year ago,Spent most of the early aumtumn hunting pidgeons. There hasent been much clayshooting since october, so I wanted to break out the shotgun and hunt what was availiable. The landowner said I could hunt whatever squirrels and foxes I could find while they're in season. only saw a hare, and didnt know if I had permission form landowner to shoot it, and I felt the us2 shot I had for fox would be too big, and us6 for squirrels to small, so let it pass

A former friend had a story he was set up in a tree stand and some asshole set up a blind right next to him.
So my buddy started spitting chew spit at him from above, and the other hunter started mouthing off he's been huntin this area for decades.
I forget what happened, but it's something that can go bad quickly.

An uncle said his friends got robbed when it was still dark in the morning they were getting ready to go inawoods near a popular trailhead.
Some other "hunters" pulled their guns on them and robbed them.

I've never been hunting but I'm planning to get into it. Ideally, I'd start this fall. I've been doing some research on the internet so I have a lot of the tangible information down, but I feel like I need more insider information to really get it.

How much should I just 'take a swing at it' versus needing really precise plans for everything? Should I just try my best at skinning and chopping up a deer or there some horrible thing that could happen if I fuck it up that I don't know about? How sensible and acceptable is it to just set up a nice spot on the ground and hope a deer comes by, rather than getting a tree stand or something more complicated?

Got my first woodcock on a guided hunt a few days ago. I'm definitely gonna be a lifelong upland hunter. Way more fun than anything else I've done. May get a dog in a year or 2 if I can do the research on training.

I would at least scout the areas that you could possibly hunt before making any big purchases. I would get a decent set of binoculars before a tree stand. Also if you know any friends or family with land that holds animals try to get permission there. Public land is usually very pressured and competitive, other hunters will try to frustrate your efforts and make you quit the spot so they can have it to themselves, especially when it comes to big game like deer.
