I want to wander
Anonymous 10/23/24(Wed)21:05:07 | 33 comments | 1 images
Hello anons, Floridian /g/ tourist here.
I want to wander around the Appalachian Mountains for a few days, in the snow. I am fucking tired of the heat. I am fucking tired of people. I literally just want to wander around in freezing cold snow, alone, for a week or so, living off the land.
Preferably I would like to avoid people as much as possible. I want to learn land navigation. I also want to bring a gun, shoot an animal, and eat it.
My questions are:
>how feasible is this for someone who has never been on a REAL /out/ trip aside from camping with his dad as a kid and hiking preapproved trails?
>what skills do I need to learn, regulations do i need to read, and equipment i need to bring to ensure that I don't suffer death, grievous bodily harm, and/or arrest during this trip?
>where should I go? my only stipulation is that there is snow present. I want to do this november or december.

Look up which states have reasonable prices on out of state hunting licenses. Some states offer 1-3 day licenses for like $30. It might cost a lot more for a big game tag. Then find the state hunting regs online. Pay attention to things like legal methods of take, i.e. what kind of gun you're allowed to use on what animals.

>how feasible is it for someone with no real experience?
It can be broken down thusly:
Hiking and camping for a week in nice weather is totally doable. Hiking and camping in the winter is much more challenging and you’re more likely to regret it.
Living off the land for a week in the winter and having to ask very broadly how to do it just proves that you can’t. Bring your food with you and enjoy the solitude.

it's pretty easy to find deer in the winter just leave out some deer corn and they'll show up.
I think you better bring extra food for yourself in case you don't find one, then you won't die. A week isn't really that long to survive, I think you should be able to do it.
Just go up to like Pennsylvania in January (November/December not really guaranteed for snow) get a deer tag and camp out in some state forest. You'll probably see other people, it's not that remote anywhere on the east coast.
Maybe a better choice for you would be to hike up to some huts, there's various huts along the trails you can sleep in and I think that's the hardest part, getting some sleep out in the woods. Woods are noisy, lots of animals awake at night. Hard to sleep when a barred owl decides to stretch its vocal cords 50ft away.

You're gonna be waiting a while for it to snow in the southern Appalachians, Mr. Manipulative daydreamer.

If you're unaccustomed to going /out/ in the winter I would highly advise getting some safer practice with some shorter excursions before just throwing yourself into it for a week. It doesn't take much to get wet and die of hypothermia because you fucked up your clothing and/or shelter systems and couldn't get a fire going with wet wood and stiff shaking hands. "Living off the land" will be easy because you don't need to eat for a week. The best way to do this is to have one or more recon trips where you do daytime winter recreation with more safety nets (a cabin with proper amenities, instructors, people who can hear you call for help, etc.) and then plan your week-long winter hunting excursion.
Consider taking a winter survival course, or at least looking at their preparation guides and requirements, e.g.:
https://graybeardedgreenberet.com/products/winter-survival-course
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLyG69iYe4FHNIldKVteKHyRFZ7qL0s449
You could also learn a lot about managing cold weather layers through periods of exertion and rest by taking skiing or snowboarding lessons. It would also be easier to guarantee snow because ski lodges generate their own and are in good snow locations to begin with.
Something else that may be useful before your trip is building your cold tolerance through cold showers and ice baths. Techniques like the Wim Hof Method can help but be cognizant of the risks of hyperventilating in the field. My Florida friend had a rough time acclimating to his first winter up here and that was a mild winter innacity (he does fine in winter now).

>just leave out some deer corn and they'll show up
In Pennsylvania baiting deer can get you in trouble and I wouldn't advise it, particularly to someone from out of state who doesn't know the local deer jannie situation.

TikTok brain. Here's a greentext version:
>cold weather /out/ clothing is more than just putting on your thickest coat
>hypothermia can happen faster than you think
>if you're healthy and well dressed you can get by not eating for a week
>[wouldn't recommend, it's easier to stay warm if you eat enough]
>there are winter survival courses in this region
>there are free online winter survival courses in this region
>snowboarding is an easy way to experience activity in the snow with warm facilities and babysitters on hand
>snowboarding can be done earlier in the season due to location and snow machines
>Floridamen have shit cold tolerance but you can fix it
>getting basic experience with something new before trying a more extreme version is advisable
>baiting deer in Pennsylvania is illegal
