the "alt" approach is good because you want the liberty to do whatever you want free from the shackles of normie taste and commercial imperatives, but this attitude tends to lead to laziness, the lack of polish can become a vice. hence indie fags suddenly going for a slick and poptimist approach, which in a way is a gesture of betrayal. pop music is essentially fashion and fashion is about petulance, its about betraying one's style for a new one lest the latecomers think you're their friend. so maybe the alt/pop dialectic is the tension between freedom and discipline.

alt music defines itself in opposition to mainstream music, and as mainstream music absorbs alt mannerisms (as it invariably does) alt music needs to evolve in tandem. its a silly game. even back in elvis and beatles days pop music was always about insolence, about scandalizing the squares (one's parents), but nothing ages faster than shock schlock which is why it only took five minutes for skrillex to go from cool to cringe.

anyway op's quip is really a "might makes right" quip because mainstream taste is synonymous with secular power while alt music corresponds to underdog idealism and op's frog pic is saying fuck that, i'm rich, you're poor, i win, simple as. these are my thoughts and i am insane.
