What is it with former early '00s greats turning into shitty radio ready pop bands that don't get played on the radio anyway so it's kinda pointless?

A rise in popularity necessitates a change in live venue, and also in live sound. Music that once sounded vital and exciting in a club setting takes a dive when you start playing arenas and stadiums. A lot of bands in the 00s took one of two common routes to adapt their sound to larger stages - do arena rock and sound like U2 - or do synthpop and sound like every other fag who hopped that trend. It led to a lot of terrible music from once promising young groups.
