Am I the only one who loves The Mothers' output but can't get into Zappa's solo work at all? Seems much less interesting and fun to me in comparison

maybe you should lurk more? 90% of zappa fans on this board prefer early zappa and i don't get it at all. zappa was at his peak between 1974 and 1981.

It's been the received wisdom for decades that Zappa peaked early and became irrelevant after the hippie era. His later stuff was too individualistic for rock critics to wrap their heads around. They can't engage with music on its own terms, only in the context of a bigger (usually extra-musical) picture.
