Bob-seger_Old_Time_Rock_and_roll
In 1978 people were complaining about how "today's music has no soul!" "I remember when music was GOOD!"
Why does this phenomenon persist when the very fact that people have said it every year for at least 50 years referring to music as "good" that someone was referring to as "having no soul" a decade earlier?
Do you just not take someone seriously who expresses an opinion like this?
Maybe it was original when Bob Seger wrote this song but somehow I doubt it.
I bet my Grandpa thought "Old Time Rock and Roll" was garbage in the 50s while he listened to classical music.

Old people always have nostalgia for what they listened to when they were younger so they call everything modern trash

Most music from the 70s sounds fucking awful because albums were cranked out to be played on AM radio. Boomers need to understand that no, we weren't there and we will never get "it" and never will.

The real answer is that most people are unwilling to say they like something until enough time has passed that there seems to be a general consensus on it

Pet Sounds and Abbey Road are the best boomer albums.

idgi. a tune like "Running With The Devil" is not at all hard to "get" (ie. is about wanting to escape your abusive shitty parents and make your own life/"find" yourself)

Some of the best sounding music ever made is from the 70s up until digital 80s slop and subsequently the loudness war ruined everything

Yes and those albums were made by autists like George Martin. They were recorded well. I'm not saying that all 70s music is bad, only 99% kek.

Won't find me disputing that Bob Seger was only good in his youthful Detroit rocker days and his post-74 output is lame.

what i'm saying is, and maybe i wasn't entirely clear on it, was that the power pop-y kind of boomer albums like PS and Abbey Road have held up better, at least in the sense that they're more in tune with this generation's aesthetic sense (ie. more chill and feminine) whereas all the boomer hard rock/cockrock/statutory rape stuff like Zeppelin and Van Halen is not.

Who in god's name likes those bands? Nobody likes them. Not even Cuckgau likes them. Those bands were like the Pat Boone of 70s rock. They were for dorky kids who found the Stones and Zeppelin too macho.

Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell was the top selling album in the 70s. Turn on any classic rock station and you'll hear non stop Journey songs.

They were right. Most mainstream American music in the 70s was boring and cheesy. The idea behind punk and new wave was to bring back short, catchy, and exciting songs like what you had in the 50s and 60s. It’s funny to think of punk as a reactionary movement, but it was in a sense.

Bob Seger is not a good example of bad 70s music music. There is so much worse stuff out there and he has some decent tunes.

He's just Piano Springsteen yeah, but the rest of 70s rock is just so shite in comparison that even the most dementia addled boomer would prefer it AC/DC, The Who, or T-Rex. I would hope, at least.

This is a good point. It also explains why 50s nostalgia was so rampant in the 80s.
