Why does everyone seem to pretend that Nirvana invented alternative rock and singlehandedly saved the world from "hair metal"? according to the sanitized timeline:
>80s music is soley stadium rock and hair metal
>Nirvana came along and saved the world or something by inventing music with... power chords.. and... verse chorus verse song structure
>evil hair metal btfo'd

All simplifications leave out important details. What's important is that they tell what primarily happened, without being simplified to the point of wrongness.

Glam is a one trick pony and thats kind of how music and other showbiz works in the US. Every decade has its thing. The record companies know that the next generation of buyers will want something thats new and from their time, so they start pushing something else. Of the things that were pushed, grunge was the most successful one and Nirvana was just the most successful of that bunch.
Same thing with numetal in the 2000s, then those faggots with the skinnyjeans and tanktops and covered in tattoos in the 2010s.
And now because the internet has made everything available and people dont rely that much on whats being pushed, we have a timeline where 80s bands still sell out arenas and stadiums, numetal is cool again and limp bizkit and linkpark are touring and if grunge bands werent all dead from heroin, they'd be successful too.

Girls decide history. The true grunge bands were Soundgarden and AIC, but they were dude bands so they don't get the credit. Pearl Jam and Nirvana were the girl favorites, and as such they were the MTV favorites. PJ was more popular in the early days because Eddie Vedder was super sensitive and dreamy, but after Cobain killed himself all the girls were like "Oh nooo, I could have saved him". And here we are. Soundgarden and AIC are still the best.

This timeline is basically true. Just like Punk saved the world from listening prog rock, Nirvana saved the world from listening hair metal.

Easier to digest story rather than tracing 'alternative rock' all the way back to 60's garage rock bands and the whole 'college rock' scene of the 80's.
Normal people making rock music in the classic tradition wearing regular clothes with no 'media training' was what Nirvana brought to the fold. The real thing they brought to the pop culture fold was this obsession with being 'authentic'. To this day we are still grappling with the whole 'authenticity' bug. It poisons every person who buys into it. It's so annoying, i don't want to be related to when I'm listening to pop music. It's obviously coming from outsized means and connections. I don't give a fuck about a popstars mental health or personal life.
